Blitz Rate
For sure that’s a factor, especially on the quick “numbers advantage” WR screens. For the rest I think it’s the detailed blocking and timing as directed and choreographed by Ben Johnson.

Edwards is not on IR if that was the question. If the question was about Monangai he’s not on IR either. Both statements are based of the team’s website which might not be updated.

Week 6 Official Game Thread - CHI @ ATL
Tue is film study day since that’s when most of the pundits post on Youtube. After watching film of Luke Newman I realized playing next to him was our rookie Logan Jones. On the outside Ozzy Trapilo. Now I’m thinking Ben was toying with Atlanta. We were on the road (albeit with a strong Bear fan presence). Ben loses his starting RG. No problem, we’ll sub in the backup and still keep the rookie center out there. While we’re at it, for fun let’s also play the guy still working his way back from a serious knee injury who hasn’t played all year. Again on the road, protecting a QB still recovering from a hamstring injury. No problem, we got this. Now if it turned out poorly Bear kingdom (aka us) would have been all over this mid-game. Instead the offense just kept trucking along like nothing changed and I didn’t even pickup Logan Jones next to Newman during the game. Most of my life has been spent not wanting to see some of our starting Oline on the field, much less backups. Have we ever had a coach who just tossed Olinemen out there for a series or two mid-game like that? Wouldn’t the safe play, or at least conventional wisdom, be to put the starting OC back in the game once Jonah went out? I’m still hoping to see Jones start at OC sooner than later. Bradbury still gets walked back into the QBs lap too often. I’ll see what happens tomorrow night if Jones gets a couple more series.

Tush push stuff does not bother me. I love the scrums and seeing our Oline rally behind guys like Swift, Burden and Monangai in recent games gets the whole offense fired up. When the defense stops one it’s the same effect. On the 4th and short it doesn’t happen often but it does happen and we’ve done it. I loved the fumble Nashon took from Hurts last year on a tush push.

Now there are rumors saying Jonah Jackson is playing tomorrow. I grabbed this screenshot from what I think is a reputable social media link (BearsEmpire) but couldn’t find it on the Bears website which is where it is usually located. Another ‘source’ (BearsWire) says he’s not carrying an injury designation into the game tomorrow. In today’s world of AI you can never tell. It confirms that Monangai will be out again. But nothing about Edwards. Is that because he’s IR?

It was a good one…I was pretty sure you were kidding but with NFL nothing would surprise me (as you said someone will complain).

BS (not you, if the league does it). Seems if they allow crap like the ‘tush push’ they certainly should allow this. It takes a lot more skill to do what Taylor does than to simply push someone by their ass. PS: Just saw your note about being sarcastic. Derp .

I know the defense and Dennis Allen seem to be on a see-saw/teeter totter each game depending on the outcome, but has done well with the healthy players he has. I think he deserves some praise. I also heard his vision for his DBs. He wants interchangeable pieces from CB to S. The confusion that will cause QBs trying to figure out coverages or a blitz will be a huge advantage. We get Coby Bryant back, then Kyler, Malik, and Cam are all CBs that can play inside or out or maybe some S. Coby and Dillion can play FS or SS and Coby was a CB in college and started his career as a slot CB for Seahawks.

Of course, but if he keeps producing turnovers you know some teams will want a rule change. The wink ;-) was added to hint i was kidding.

Rumor has it the NFL is going to change the rules to eliminate the banana ball ;-)

Blitz Rate
For sure. This past week he was a surgeon, and also once he makes the read, his compact throwing motion is SO fast it reminds me of Marino. So that doubles the effectiveness of playing in tempo. I think this is in part why WR and bubble screens are working for us this year after watching them fail for 30 years. The comes out of Caleb's hand so fast, the play actually works in terms of timing.

Something that I noticed from the last couple of weeks, is that Tory Taylor has been disruptive. Got a guy cut last week for muffing a punt. This week we get another one and a TD. I guess the banana ball is really hard to read, especially outdoors.

He isn't playing - my guess is Edwards isn't either. Maybe Stevenson will be back but I actually think he's been so banged up all year, best thing they can do is give him another game off. Similarly I expect Monagai out this week but hopefully he's back next week and feeling fresh (as we clearly are really balancing Swift right now given the fact that he isn't 100% either).

That GB game definitely skewers those numbers. There have been a fair share of lopsided wins and like last night (and ours against ATL) lopsided scores until the losing team makes up a lot of ground to scarily close the gap. I feel this will be more like a 3-7 pt win for whomever wins it. Slightest of edges to Bears. Meanwhile some concerning news on Jonah Jackson. Hip flexor currently ruled “week to week”. And “doubtful” for Thursday. Trade Deadline...
Must’ve had too much whiskey when I posted; first off it’s Shannon (not Sterling) and yes you are correct that you didn’t directly compare the two. ASSumptions were made that if Rome was traded then a player like Walker would pick up the slack. My bust…

The Bears have given up the highest number of explosives on defense, 32nd in the NFL against the pass and 31st overall. Patriots are 5th in explosives, so they are going to have to play over the top with 2 deep to shut this down.

A 5-2 team with 5 home and 5 away games remaining has a 85% chance at making the playoffs. That drops to 65% at 4-3. So this game has a 20% swing in playoff odds.

No. I watched him for a bit against KC and while he still hustled to the ball he didn’t look like anything special. My trade target would be a young sticky CB.

Blitz Rate
Caleb is facing the highest blitz rate in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2018). Right now his Blitz Rate is 53.1%, but even with that he still has a CPOE of +6.9% and EPA/DB of +0.23 which is insane. For a full season as qualified starters, the two highest Blitz rates and only QBs within 10% of Caleb's are Newton in 2020 and Mariota in 2022, yet neither of them was successful that season: Newton 2020 -1.4% CPOE -0.07 EPA/DB Mariota 2022 -0.9% CPOE -0.04 EPA/DB Both had slightly below-average seasons with that high of a blitz rate. The blitz rate has impacted Caleb's ability to throw downfield, but that has actually helped him play on time and get the ball out of his hands quicker. Now that he is mastering that, but can still play outside of structure and extend plays, they are making him even that much more difficult to defend.

The Bears need to take care of business at home. GB is playing at DET, so either way, one of those teams is leaving with a loss. For Conference competition, SEA is playing KC, so a SEA loss would give the Bears a 2-game cushion on a Wild Card spot with every team from the NFC North making it in. If the season ended today, the playoffs would look like: GB @ NYG CHI @ CAR DET @ MIN A Bears win and GB loss, Bears would move into the #5 Seed and play the weakest Division winner. That seems like the sweet spot. The NFC North Division winner gets a home game, but would have the toughest opponent Wild Card weekend. The #5 and #6 seed are guaranteed to play the Division winners from the East and South.

Big game this Thursday. Patriots are a very good team, albeit a bit banged up, with an elite young qb. Bears are similar. Would be awesome to beat the defending Super Bowl runners up! Let’s go Bears!!!
