  1. I'd love to have him against an easier opponent. I say easier because of the old saying, On any given Sunday. You never know from one year to the next, or from one week to the next, what to expect.

Washington's pass defense gave up the most yards (4627) and TDs (39) of any team in 2023.

With them (I assume) starting Daniels at QB, bring him to Chicago for a reunion of the top 2 QBs drafted.

Ooops, I just realized we play them in an away game. LOL - Still, let them open the season in Washington.

the same is true of every drill and every throw. A 12 yard out is a 12 yard out in practice, at half speed, in high school and in the super bowl.

Some guys drop the pass right into the bucket every time, but most guys have a wider area the ball falls into across many throws. Caleb was like a machine, it looked like a rerun each throw. Awesome.

I have been to so many training camps for the Bears, going back to the dog days in Plattville. I can promise you this is nothing special. In fact, I bet every QB on our roster could execute that drill without a miss-step.

Now, what you should be excited about is the blurb I read on several sites, (the quote below from nbcsportschicago.com). It tells me that Caleb and Rome are already developing the "mental connection" in day one of rookie camp that legendary QB/WR teammates had to help them have HOF careers. Manning/Harrison. Montana/Rice. Unitas/Berry. Now Williams/Odunze. Yes, we have a lot to look forward to:

    Quote

At one point during the 7-on-7 period, Odunze got jammed getting out of his break, which forced Williams to roll out of the pocket and buy time before hitting him along the sideline for a gain of 18-20 yards. It was the type of off-script playmaking from Williams and ad-libbing from Odunze that the Bears hope to see on Sundays, even if it's not supposed to be featured in 7-on-7 work.

The two Bears rookies briefly chatted after the rep about the route and timing before returning to a solid day of consistently accurate work for Williams.

For example, would we like it if every sunday at 3pm, a lottery was held in NFL headquarters and the winning team got a free 14 points?

    Is that a serious question?

All the NFL is trying to do is to return the excitement of the KO return to the game in a fashion that will still reduce injuries from high impact tackles. Simple as that.

Special teams play has been a part of the game since 1869 when the first college football game took place. Good teams excel in all three phases of the game, Defense, Offense, and Special Teams.

A TD scored on a KO return, Punt return, trick play, etc... is earned through out executing the opponent. The key word is "earned." If they win because they out maneuvered the opposition, they earned the victory. No one gave it to them.

  4. I don't want to watch a flag football game, a game without chaos. Everything scripted and predictable.

I want on side kicks, announced and unannounced. The Statue of Liberty, the flea flicker, the end around, a double reverse, a returner like Hester electrifying the crowd, I want the unexpected because football is supposed to be chaotic by its very nature. 99% of the game is controlled chaos. The 1% of the plays that make the highlight reels, the unexpected chaos, is the cherry on top of the sundae.

The new KO rules will bring the KO returns back into the game. We will no longer have to watch the ball bounce out of the end zone for a touchback. Can you imagine how we would have been deprived of the fun we had watching Hester return KOs? If he had played after the NFL screwed up the KO rules, he would have been a so-so WR and probably cut from the team. He wouldn't be inducted into the HOF. We wouldn't have the fond memories. He created chaos. We loved it.

DJ was at the Cubs game with him, Odunze wasnt'. DJ also lives in the area and has a family. I think it is much to do about nothing. DJ has had some of the worst QB situations since being drafted, and now he finally has a real QB. I don't think him not being everywhere Caleb is at is an issue. Keenan is also new to the area, so he clearly is taking advantage of the new fans and area.

DJ also has two kids, one less than a year old, the other a three year old. I'm sure he needs time to spend with them before veterans report.

  6. I'd argue there is nothing 'fluke' about a KO landing in the 'zone' and returned 80-99 yards for a TD. If that be the case, were the TDs scored on KO returns before the NFL screwed the fans with their 'safety' changes all flukes?

I'm thrilled with the new KO rules, and am anxious to see how the NFL implements it in preseason, changes that will be made to fine-tune it, and the final version when we kick off the season. KOs had become totally boring. Time to go get a drink or, get rid of one in the BR. Gone were the days when I got excited over seeing a KO return. This change is welcome by me!

This is a threat to Tyler Scott, right?   Or is it Velus Jones?

I hope it works out for him!

I'd say Homer and Jones are both in jeopardy. Scott will hopefully prove to be the WR we expected when we were excited about him last preseason as a possible sleeper. Maybe with the new WR room, he can get help reaching his true potential.

Ian Wheeler RB/KR signing is for the new kickoff rules.  Bears will need to KR specialists and Wheeler must have been ID by scouts for this purpose.  All UDFA sign 3 yr deals according to this video.

I also just read that the reason for his signing was primarily as a KR specialist. I saw on social media (X) that he signed a 3 year deal for 2.830,000 (which seems pretty damn good for a UDFA). It didn't mention a signing bonus, not to say there wasn't one.

Anyone see we signed UDFA Ian Wheeler to a 3 yr contract? Its not guaranteed so we can still cut him anytime. Dont know if this is true, only seen one post on it and it is not listed in the Bears transaction page.

Wasnt listed on NFLTradeRumors transactions page either.

That was probably a post by his dad. wishful thinking

You could be correct, I found several sources saying he is a Bear. Here is a link below to an article on WindyCityGridiron:

Bear Bones: Interview with Bears UDFA Ian Wheeler

If you do a "Google" search, you will find videos and articles.

    Pix,

My condolences.  I just lost my mother about 10 days ago so I haven't been online much recently.  I cannot imagine what you have endured.  Your message rings true.  Our families are a gift, Bear Down and make the time for them.

I am so saddened to hear about the loss of your Mother. I know your family has faced multiple challenges this year. My thoughts are with you and your loved ones.

Please take care and stay safe.

I am sorry to read this Pix.  You have had a tough run lately that would break many.  You have always had a good heart since the times I first found Bear Talk over 20 years ago and you still do.  I hope the Bears can help bring you joy with this new era beginning.  This site has been my escape even though the team hasn't been exactly how we would like it to be.

Thanks. I appreciate everyone's kind response. I must admit, I'm embarrassed I shared this with everyone. It wasn't my intention. Sometimes, I vent openly only because it seems to help the healing process, rather than keeping it to myself. Living alone, it is usually just me and four walls that hear my complaints. LOL

A playoff run by the Bears would certainly be a welcome distraction!

I would have liked a better option at Center, that is my only gripe right now. I am assuming they will bring in a vet Edge and DT to fill out the rotation on defense. The only position I don't like is Center with Bates/Shelton. The only saving grace is Shelton started the entire year for the Rams, so at least we know the floor.

However, I hope I am wrong, but I believe I read Shelton led the NFL Centers in QB pressures given up last year.

So, if I am correct, the floor for Shelton is very low.

I have more faith in Bates. It's obvious to me that there is something he likes about Bates. He was the very first FA he went after when hired and revisited again after he lost out the first time. He must feel there is something there that we are missing.

Pixote, I am very sorry for your loss.  I have lost two children as well, so share your pain.  Best wishes to you and your family.

    Thanks.

When you raise your children, you never imagine attending their funeral. I'm sincerely sorry to hear you have also experienced this unimaginable nightmare. Take Care!

So apparently the Bengals are calling asking about Khalil Herbert in trade. They need a RB, having just lost Dixon.

At the same time, Trey Hendrickson, their best edge rusher has asked for a trade. He had 17.5 sacks last year and has two years remaining on his deal.

    Hmmmm.

Hell Yes, I'd even sweeten the pot if necessary. He'd be awesome added to Sweat on our DL.

In fact, so everyone can see, here is the letter I sent to you. Just so everyone is clear on exactly how I have been trying to proceed.

    ---

    Hey Pix,

just to be clear I have zero problem with you. I have always respected you and we have known each other for like 15 years. I know you created this place too, and over the years Ive said thank you for that too! And Ill say it again! Thank you!

I know what happened with Stinger, and I'm sure it has stained my perception in your eyes. I get that. I knew it would happen, and I apologize that anyone else had to be put off by that. I wont restate my side of all of that, Ill just say i get why your view of me may have changed, and I am sorry that you had to see it.

All I can say is that I am actually a very friendly nice person. I always make random people at the grocery store laugh. I raised my kids the right way, and I take care of my neighbors. No one would describe me as negative or anything like that in my real life.

And I get the feeling that you are a similar kind of person too. You always came across warm and caring on this board. I always felt badly as you went through your various health challenges over the years.

So anyway, a lot of this online stuff is the tone of voice we read each other's words in. After my fight with Stinger, Im sure my voice in your head sounds different. And if you read what I wrote to you in a defensive angry tone, then Im sure it reads a lot nastier than it does in the tone I had in my head when I wrote it.

Anyway, I am not angry with you, I never have been, I respect you and I apologize to you for what went on earlier. I hope that all helps :)

IF I had received that PM, I would have responded in a very positive manner immediately.

Thank you for the kind words you said.

BUT, I didn't receive a message from talkbears that a PM from you was waiting for me to view.

I'm sure I didn't, you're sure I did, at least now I know what you are referring to.

To put things into proper perspective, a lot has been going on that has been very distracting to me. Who knows, maybe I'm spacing out. I'm still struggling trying to regain my mobility after fracturing my back last year.

You said this PM was sent in February?

After my daughter passed away last year, I swore I prayed, I never wanted to go through the loss of another child. Unfortunately, God didn't listen (I'm beginning to wonder if there is a God). My son David died of heart failure the last week of this past January. He was only 48.

There was a period when I withdrew from everyone. It wasn't until a memorial service was held for David by his surviving siblings just recently that I began to 'heal.'

Because of my back injury, I had been unable to visit my son for over a year before he died.

That being said, please, any parent reading this, never stop hugging your child and telling them you love them. I don't care if they are 8, 18, or, 48 years old. If they pass away you will regret not having reassured them of your love one last time.

The PM shows you read it.

I never got it. I get PMs from others. I always receive an email letting me know there is a private message, with a small teaser and a link to read the rest of the message. I never got an email from Talkbears telling me you sent me a PM, so I honestly do not know what happened there. Maybe it got snagged by my spam filter? I usually make a brief check before I empty my junk folder. Didn't recall seeing it there.

I have received notifications of a private message waiting for me to read, clicked on the link, and found no message. I assumed the sender deleted it before I went to read it. But it has been well over a year since I had that happen.

P.S. when we supposedly buried the hatchet the other day I offered my hand to shake, you didnt accept it. Just like you read a very nice letter I wrote to you a couple months ago trying to resolve this and you also didnt respond.

So figure it out. Either you want to fight or you dont. Whichever it is, Ill join you in it.

But you can stop dishing it out if you cant take it.

But in either case Im not angry. My feelings arent hurt. You may just be misunderstanding my New York ness. If someone gets in my face, i dont back down. If they are polite, then me too.

I never got a letter (I assume you mean private message since you don't have my email addy). If I had, I would have responded.

The hand shake, seriously. I took it as a fun response, but didn't think you expected me to respond.

  18. 1 minute ago, BearFan PHX said:

I explained this already to you.

    1) I called your opinions stupid AFTER you called me paranoid. Like I said, symmetry. If youre civil, Im civil, if youre not, Im just going the speed of traffic. THe tone is up to you.

    2) I dont care if someone doesnt agree with my opinions, it is the personal stuff that the REASON my opinoin is wrong is because I hate Fields and love Willaims and dont broker any nuance.

You can disagree with what I say all day long. Bring facts, and we will debate. When the debate is that my opinoins are wrong because I have a character flaw, that's not me starting it.

You are failing to understand the difference between disagreeing with me, which is fine, and speaking about my character and thought process as the reason Im wrong. The first is FINE, the second will be returned in symmetry.

If you understand that and keep doing it, then youre trolling. If you dont understand that then youre not smart.

If you DO understand it and then moderate yourself doing that, then there will be no issues.

I didn't accuse you of being paranoid until after you said I was picking on you when I was not picking on you! That's paranoia.

  19. 6 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

nope. Its you literally calling me paranoid. Its Stinger literally saying that the reason i dont agree about Caleb holding the ball too much isnt because my point of view is different, but its because I love Caleb and hate Fields.

If you want to stop being accused of personal comments, then stop making them.

Didn't we just have this conversation a week or two ago? You said you understood when I said I am not a person who is aggressively confrontational. We even shook hands (over the net) and agreed to move on.

PHX, you can't tell people their opinions are stupid and then get upset when they disagree with you and claim they are picking on you.

You can't claim people are getting personal when they disagree with you and constantly insult them because of their "stupid opinions."

If you can disagree with other posters' opinions, then why does it upset you when a poster disagrees with you?

  20. 11 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

Its time for you to stop psychoanalyzing me.

I dont think everything is pointed at me. I think you said the film sucked because you arent smart enough to understand the point i was making - what it proved.

I think it's time for you to stop gaslighting me. You talk about my frame of mind and then tell my Im paranoid. LOL

    Dude. its enough.

I didnt bring up Caleb holding the ball. I said that was an old narrative that was about Fields. Thats how it came up.

If you dont understand the logic of whats being said that's on you, but your directives about what i should and shouldn't think or say are RIDICULOUS.

Im done being polite about it - you do it, you hear about it, you dont do it, it doesnt come up. Simple.

But if Im paranoid, then youre dumb. It goes both ways.

I do have the right to disagree with the stupid media narratives. You guys read an article and then defend it like you know something. Watch the damn tape and stop being stupid.

Like I said, stop being so paranoid.

I disagree with many (at one point or another or all) posters occasionally. No one has ever accused me of flaming, trolling, gaslighting, or picking on them except for you. You tell everyone they have a right to their opinions, but then insult them by telling them their opinions are stupid. But if anyone disagrees with you, holy shit, they are picking on you.

  21. 1 minute ago, BearFan PHX said:

well, its because someone is saying Williams is having a problem that was actually Fields' problem.

But you know what Im tired of? All this silly nitpicking on me. Ill write about what i want to write about, and I will call out fake media narratives when I read them.

I'm not nitpicking on you. I'm tired of the comparisons to Fields by EVERYONE. Not just you. I can understand before he was traded. I can understand shortly after. Hell, I was kind of okay with it up until the draft. But now is the time to move on.

I loved Justin Fields. I will be a fan of his for as long as he plays in the NFL, as long as it isn't against the Bears or their interests.

But it is time to give it up.

(And it's time for you to stop being so paranoid, thinking every negative is pointed at you.)
