  1. I think it is safe to make several assumptions. Caleb will be a Bear. Unless he holds out, gets injured, or plays like crap in the preseason, he will be our starting QB in game one of 2024.

The question is, what can we expect from a "generational" quarterback in his rookie year?

The only two quarterbacks I can remember having this much hype and high expectations before throwing their first NFL pass were, ironically, both with the Colts. I'm referring to, of course, Payton Manning and Andrew Luck.

I checked how they and the Colts performed in the rookie years of both quarterbacks.

The 1997 Colts had a record of 3-13. With Peyton Manning as the starting quarterback in 1998, they were, um, 3-13. They did turn it around in 1999 and were 13-3. In his rookie year, Peyton only completed 56.7% of his passes for 3739 yards, with 26 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

In 2011 (after 9 straight years of double-digit wins), the Colts slumped to 2-14. In 2012, Andrew's rookie year, they improved to 11-5. Luck again, like Peyton, had a poor completion %, 54.1, but threw for 4374 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

The bottom line is that I wasted my time. 😕 From all of this, I have no idea what to expect from Caleb.

It is so hard man. On one hand, the Bears have to replace Justin Jones and Ngakoue's snaps. Those are holes. WR3, TE3, and even OT to an extent are luxury picks. Just look at the JSN interview from the Super Bowl about the usage of the WR3 in Waldron's offense.

On the other hand, if a blue chip player is sitting there at #9, like Alt or Odunze, you have to take them. My reasoning may be different than others, but if you don't expect to ever draft in the top 10 again, why would you trade out of it when you are there?

However, if MHJ, Nabers, Odunze, and Alt are gone in the top 8, I would expect the Bears to trade down.

On the top draft scenario, if the Bears move off of 9, I hope they get more than just 77+148 to do so. I want a 2nd round pick, even if it is later. The teams with the best pick slots for a trade for 9 that gives back a 2nd is JAX at 17+48, CIN at 18+49+149+214, and LAR at 19+52+99+217. The LAR one is interesting as that would be a mid-2nd rounder, a late 3rd rounder, and a late 6th rounder. Here is how that would look:

Me either. After Williams, I feel like it is pick your flavor. Penix, Daniels, Maye, McCarthy, and to an extent, Nix, provide teams with different options at QB that may fit their scheme better.

It's going to be a great year to be a true football fan, in addition to being a fanatic supporting the best team of all time, THE BEARS!

I am anxious to see the NEW Bears dominate!

I am also anxious to see which of the six top quarterbacks are legitimate franchise quarterbacks and which ones are fool's gold.

Fortunately, I have every pay-for-view option the NFL is using to rape the fans of every penny they can collect because of our addiction.

Here is my take, did the complete round 1.

    Bears end up with:

    1.1 Caleb Williams QB

    1.17 Brian Thomas Jr WR. (9 for 17, 48, 2025 3rd)

    2.48 Darius Robinson DE

    3.75 Branden Fiske DT

    4.122 Tanor Bortolini C

I like the players you selected for the Bears. You managed to grab our top 5 needs in the four rounds.

If there is that much interest in Nix and Penix, then i hope they go before 9 so even more players fall to us or we are able to trade down a bit to get the same players. Very cool.

Agree. Teams are desperate for QBs, so I think there is a chance they reach for one who would otherwise be drafted late rd 1 or rd 2.

My dream draft, although I doubt it happens, Bears draft Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze

  6. 01- Chicago - QB Caleb Williams
02- Washington - QB Jayden Daniels
    03- New England - QB J.J. McCarty
04- Arizona - WR Marvin Harrison, Jr.
05- LA Chargers - WR Rome Odunze
06- NY Giants - QB Drake Maye
07- Tennessee - OL Joe Alt
08- Atlanta - EDGE Dallas Turner
09- Chicago - WR Malik Nabers
10- NY Jets - TE Brock Bowers
11- Minnesota - QB Bo Nix
12- Denver - QB Michael Penix, Jr.
13- LV Raiders - OL Taliese Fuaga
14- New Orleans - EDGE Jared Verse
15- Indianapolis - CB Terrion Arnold

I'm sure there will be multiple trades in the top 15, but I'm not savvy enough to predict them, so I left it as is.

I thought in 2022 that I saw Fields beat guys in the open field all the time. I agree he doesnt have wiggle, but he was able to abruptly change his line and accelerate and it seemed to be really hard to stop. Not so much of a juker as a cutter.

But back in reality, who is our kick returner? Scott?

This is an excellent article on which Bear players might benefit from the new rule changes.

I was surprised there was no speculation on Dante Pettis. I know he was a punt returner, but with the new rules, would he be a possible kick returner? I don't recall him taking any reps as a KO returner but he might be a sleeper?

Bears Winners and Losers from Kickoff Return Rule Changes

  8. I was just reading the new kickoff rules for the 2024 season. At first glance, it is quite a change. However, I think it will accomplish the goal of making kickoffs once again a vital part of special teams instead of an afterthought.

Here is a link to the story (and new rules) on NFL.com. (What do you guys think about the new rules?)

NFL owners pass new hybrid kickoff rule at Annual League Meeting

In summary, if the kickoff lands between the goal line and the twenty-yard line, it must be returned. However, the alignment of the players and the point of release are totally different. Special teams will have to spend a lot of time getting ready to take advantage of this new set of rules.

I'm anxious to see it in place. Kickoffs were once exciting. Then they made them totally blahh! (Thank God we enjoyed Hester's exciting returns before they screwed around with the kidkoff rules.) This might actually force me to watch kickoffs again instead of using it as a bathroom break. LOL

  9. I am expecting an announcement that we will be on Hard Knocks.

I see where it will not be a single team but an entire division this year.

So, will the NFC North be the featured division?

As much as fans enjoy seeing their team behind the scenes, it must be a distraction as they prepare for the season.

The Bears were on this year's short list of teams before they decided to include all teams from 1 of 8 divisions.

  10. Yeah, I have to agree, but hey, it the return of football. LOL

Generally, we only learn who we "think" will make the team as backups or practice squad.

Starters rarely play much, for a good reason. I'm always praying we can make it opening day w/o major injuries.

I can't think of a better landing spot than what we have here in Chicago to start a career.  He is set up to succeed here.  He's not walking into a situation where he has to be the hero, he will be surrounded by proven talent.  Something we've not been able to say about any Bears rookie QB who was drafted to be the franchise guy.

This is one thing we can finally agree on. 😉

  12. 6 hours ago, BearFan PHX said:

He didn't say that he was the best prospect, he said he was the best at "quarterbacking" meaning reading defenses. It didn't account for athleticism or anything else.

I agree with Harbaugh too. I think Williams and McCarthy are the two NFL ready QBs. I just dont know if McCarthy has the ahtletic skills he will need at the next level. But if he thrives I will not be surprised. I think he has a better chance to translate to the NFL than Jayden Daniels for example.

And as for the rest, you're the one sharing all this anti Caleb stuff about him crying, and now this. It's obvious that you don't like Williams. And I just don't understand why. Is it still about Justin?

Because whatever you feel about Justin Fields, that isn't Williams' fault. Williams is just the most complete prospect int he draft, and the most compete prospect in many years. It jumps off the tape to me. We must watch football very differently I guess. The way we evaluate Fields and Williams being so opposite.

I think we can see now that I was right about Fields, and hopefully it wont be long until we can all see i was right about Williams too.

And it's not rocket science. I'm not seeing some really deep secret anything. It seems obvious to me, and most sportswriters, and NFL people. That's why I'm so surprised you don't see it too? The guy is awesome.

Expressing my concern about Caleb's maturity because he curled up in a fetal position, wearing his uniform, and sitting in his mother's lap crying like a baby is legit.

However, I suspect his father had a word with him afterward. Hopefully he will not disgrace the Bear's by acting so childish once drafted. Yes, it is fine to show emotions on the sideline, but that went way beyond the norm expected from a pro athlete.

BUT I STILL WANT THE BEARS TO DRAFT CALEB!

How often do I have to say it? I know you can read. Yes, I checked them all out. Williams, Maye, Daniels, McCaffery, etc., trying to find an alternative so that we could not only draft a franchise QB but trade down to #2 to do so while cashing in on a boatload of picks.

Unfortunately, I could not find any substitute that made me feel comfortable giving up a chance to draft Caleb at #1. So I repeat for the umpteenth time: I want the Bears to draft Caleb.

Now, you also didn't read this:

    Quote

Harbaugh raised eyebrows when he told Colin Cowherd in February that he thought McCarthy would be the top pick in the draft.

I asked a legitimate question, and you blew me off, accusing me of trying to defame Caleb. NONSENSE! Harbaugh legitimately believes in McCaffery. So IF HE HAD BEEN HIRED AS OUR HC, would he have traded the pick to Washington to get the extra picks and then selected McCaffery at #2 to be the replacement for Fields?

It's a legitimate "What if" question I proposed.

    I believe he would have.

    I'm sure you do not.

I'd be interested in the opinions of others.

  13. 13 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

I think he said he was the best QB at Michigan. So he's talking about college careers and pro days. Not including NFL performances. And he's saying McCarthy is the best reading defenses, not the best athlete.

I am convinced that had we signed Harbaugh, we'd still be taking Williams.

I don't know why you don't see it, but you don't.

You keep doubling down on this anti Caleb stuff, and you're gonna feel really silly when Caleb is the best QB in Bears history.

I'm just quoting Harbaugh. I think we should draft Williams as long as Poles finds everything in order. I think the visit next week will be the closure needed. So you can stop trying to make this ME.

Read the article. He is stating (does he really mean it?) that McCarthy is the best QB prospect in the draft. READ THE ARTICLE! It is not me trying to dis Caleb!

  14. In the article linked below, Harbaugh really promotes McCarthy as the top quarterback in the class, even above Williams.

    Quote

Harbaugh previously has said he thinks McCarthy is the best quarterback in Michigan history. That, of course, includes Tom Brady -- and Harbaugh himself. And now the coach is channeling the praise towards McCarthy's pro potential, saying he's the best quarterback in a strong QB class because McCarthy "plays quarterback the best" of the group.

Harbaugh returned to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Wolverines' pro day and said what McCarthy did was above all others in the history of pro days.

"The workout J.J. had -- I've been to a lot of pro-day workouts and watched quarterbacks throw -- that's the best I've ever seen a quarterback do at a pro day," Harbaugh said.

He later added: "That was the best throwing day I've ever seen."

Sure, he would have reason to promote McCarthy. It would benefit his Chargers to see as many QBs drafted before their selection. Obviously he will not be interested in drafting a QB.

However, he was even promoting McCarty off air to one of our forum members in attendance at the combine. He REALLY does believe McCarthy is the #1 QB in the draft.

    So my question is:

If we had hired Harbaugh as our HC, replacing Flus, would we be drafting J.J. McCarthy as our QB instead of Caleb Williams?

By the way - I don't like that Poles won't be there. I feel like even if they know - they should go through the same process with all 4 of the guys. I don't think pro-days are to watch the guys throw - I don't think anything along those lines is going to be gleaned from a pro day (unless they really have limited tools or something).  But the opportunity to see what makes people tick on a 1:1 level - that can be valuable and you should maximize all of those chances.

I guess the reality is - they will get that chance if they meet with Maye and have a true 1:1 with him.

I think it is just the logistics that have him missing NC Pro Day. LSU is on 3/27. Then NC on 3/28.  That would be a mighty quick turnaround, especially if he wants to wine and dine, Daniels, like he did Caleb after his workout.

  16. On a positive note, LOL

This quote (made by Poles) in an article on NFL.com was a very positive sign:

    Quote

Poles noted his first impression of Williams was how much his teammates battle for the QB.

"They don't like him," he said, via Adam Hoge of CHGO Bears, "they love him."

    wow, how soon they forget.

or maybe rogers not even bothering to find out if his mother and brother burned to death in a CAL fire? or helping them out when their house burned down? i seem to remember something to that effect. am i wrong?

i personally don't give a shite what anyone says if we have a qb that can put us in the winners circle.

Rogers is a scum bag. We all know that. It has nothing to do with this.

    a) I want a QB who can help us win a Super Bowl. Check. No issues there.

    b) I also want a QB to show maturity. To represent our franchise on and off the field with the dignity and respect it deserves.

I'm hoping Caleb can do both. If he can, I'm all in!

  18. 7 hours ago, BearFan PHX said:

We are so freakin lucky to have this guy, and all we can do is complain. I dont think it's Caleb that's entitled.

First, we don't have the guy. I think we will. He is a great-looking prospect, but the card hasn't been turned into the commissioner yet.

Second point: I would love to have him as our QB if, after due diligence, Poles decides he is our guy. The next visit to Halas Hall will be extremely important in that regard. It's about time we got a QB who will lead us to multiple Super Bowls.

Now, your closing statement. Who, then, do you think is entitled? The definition of entitled:

    Quote

Believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.
"kids who feel so entitled and think the world will revolve around them"

It sounds like a lot of egocentric GOATS from all sports, including Caleb (although he has yet to prove he is a GOAT). I have no issue with him having a big ego, as long as he realizes he will need to earn the respect of his teammates and fans. There is no entitlement.

The bottom line: I do not want to see late-night talk hosts (Kimmel, Colbert, etc.), SNL, and the media spoof Caleb because after losing a game against the Packers, he sought comfort from his mother in the stands.

I don't want opposing teams making a fortune off of souvenirs sold when we visit them, such as Caleb's diapers and pacifiers.

I want him to be not only become our franchise quarterback but also a mature young man who will represent our beloved Bears on and off the field with dignity and respect.

That is what I expect, and feel, as a lifelong fan, I am entitled to.
