  1. This is an extremely talented group of receivers who are available in this year's draft. I love MHJ, but Nabers and R.O. are also going to be pro bowl-caliber WRs. We could trade down, pick up B Thomas, and not miss a beat. The guy is awesome. I guess what I am saying is hell no, don't give up draft capital to select one of the top three. Let one of them fall to us, or trade back to mid-first and select Thomas.

Take a look at historical punters and their draft position Pix

You mean like Ray Guy of Oakland drafted #23, round one, in 1973 and played his entire career, 14 seasons, for the Raiders?

LOL - Okay, I understand your point. But if we wound up with let's say 8 picks instead of 4 because of multiple trade downs, and it was a choice between selecting a practice squad player that might a year or two down the road make it to the playing field, or selecting a punter who can, from day one, help us gain better field position, I choose the punter every time.

Im not taking a punter in the fourth round. That's just crazy talk. I would probably take the BYU punter in the sixth though.

If we only had 4 picks, of course, it's 'crazy talk.'

In a scenario where multiple trade-downs result in a surplus of picks, I believe it's a strategic move to consider adding a top punter to our special teams. I hold a strong belief that special teams play will be crucial this year, especially with the increased significance of kickoff returns. Mark my words, there will be multiple games where ST play will be the decisive factor in the outcome of the game.

Everyone knows who the first pick is. What happens at 9 is the question. This  is my take and why.

    1) Caleb Williams- no brainer

    9) trade with LV to 13 and also get pick 77

13). Trade with Cinn to 20 and get pick 80

    20) Chop Robinson / Chop is raw but has speed and off the chart athletics. Played the a                                          true DE position and will only be 21 this year. 6'3" 255 at 4.48 speed

    RAS score 9.69

    75) Mo Kamara/ edge highly productive , 6'2" 250 at 4.57 speed. Compares to Brandon Graham RAS 8.82

    77) Tez Walker/ WR natural playmaker with 4.36 speed. 18 TDs in last 20 games RAS 9.87

80 )Tanor Bortolini / OC   can play center and  guard and future starter. Great athlete. RAS 9.79

    122) Tip Reiman/ TE great athlete at 6'5" 275 with 4.64 speed. RAS 9.93

I used the Rich Hill chart for trade value  and draft buzz and GBND report for content.

With limited picks I drafted a rotational WR with speed and upside.

Robinson was the last of the top DEs available in the first round. Chop is young and has a lot of growth to develop. Also played a true DE position. Also drafted Kamara giving more depth . Walker is capable of taking reps at 3 T that helps fill depth at DT.

Bortollini has position flexibility and is a great athlete. May take one to two years but could be our future starting center.

Rieman  is a great blocker that wasn't used much as a receiver. Has football IQ and reliable hands.

I'd love it if this happened. The problem with fan drafts involving trades is that they seldom happen. We'd like to believe that the team we have lined up a trade with would accept our offer, but the likelihood, ????

Still, the trade scenarios were reasonable and the players selected would be awesome additions to the team. The only change I would have made is to take pick 122 and draft Punter Tory Taylor from Iowa. At 6'4" 234 lbs, the guy is a stud kicker with power. I think his addition would be far more beneficial to the Bears than a blocking TE prospect.

There is a fine-looking crop of Punters this year. I drew one out of the hat, but any of the top-rated Punters will be a big improvement over what we had on ST last year.

Agree with all all of that. If CW was coming here 3 years ago , it would have been difficult for him to.

If we had the roster from 3 years ago, Poles would be trading the pick, not drafting Williams. Fortunately, Poles has done an amazing job improving the Bears to the point where we can support a rookie QB. We just need to be patient for one more year while Poles gets us ready to be contenders.

  6. Gotta love Montez Sweat.

First, today I read he is adamant that the Bears are NOT going to lose to the Packers. He has only played one game as a Bear against the Packers, and we lost. He's had enough, already.

Second, I now read he is predicting a huge year for Gervon Dexter. If he is right, the defense takes another step toward total domination.

    Quote

Sweat recently appeared on the Green Light Podcast with Chris Long, where he had high praise for defensive tackle Gervon Dexter, even going so far to predict a breakout season for last year’s second-round rookie.

“You’re gonna see man. He’s pretty good,” Sweat said about Dexter. “I feel like he’s still just kind of unlocking himself and being himself. And I think that’s gonna really flourish this year, but he’s a really talented kid. He’s one of those quick [defensive] tackles and was strong as hell. It’s really is really a sight to see. But yeah, he’s gonna jump out on on the scene for sure.”

  7. It was announced on NFL.com that 13 players have accepted invitations to attend the draft.

    An impressive list:

    Table inside Article
    Name College Position
    Terrion Arnold Alabama Cornerback
    Jayden Daniels LSU Quarterback
Marvin Harrison Jr. Ohio State Wide receiver
    J.C. Latham Alabama Offensive tackle
    Laiatu Latu UCLA Edge rusher
    Drake Maye North Carolina Quarterback
    Quinyon Mitchell Toledo Cornerback
    Malik Nabers LSU Wide receiver
    Rome Odunze Washington Wide receiver
    Darius Robinson Missouri Edge rusher
Brian Thomas Jr. LSU Wide receiver
    Dallas Turner Alabama Edge rusher
    Caleb Williams USC Quarterback

    Let me add two notes.

Before anyone complains, this was a copy-and-paste; I did not choose the order in which they were listed! It appears they chose to go in alphabetical order and not by projected draft ratings.

I'm reasonably sure others may be added to the list before the draft. Please add them when announced.

I have a The Athletic subscription, I'll see if it lets m post it on here. He's my favorite draft guide guy. He isnt  perfect on his analysis but gets it right most the time.

The Athletic is by far my favorite site to visit, and "The Beast" is an awesome publication for subscribers. It's the best draft guide available, IMO.

*IF* Caleb is who we think he is, that wouldnt be enough.

*IF* Caleb will develop into the QB I envision, you are absolutely correct.

    Damn, I hate *IFs* LOL

  10. At this point, it would take Washington's incredibly rich trade offer to convince Poles to trade down.

If they offered something completely crazy such as this, I'd trade:

    This year's 1st & both 2nd round picks, along with their 1st rd selections for 2025 & 2026.

I believe it would take something that crazy for Poles to trade the #1.

I don’t ever remember being this excited to be a Bears fan. C’mon CW let’s go to the playoffs!

As we've all said repeatedly, it starts in the trenches.

If our OL can give CW a clean pocket, with the offensive weapons we have, there is no reason why CW can't help us become a top 5 offense.

If we can support Sweat in pressuring the quarterback (requiring a 3T and Edge to complement him), there's no reason we can't boast a top-five Defense. Our DB group is poised to shine.

Now, we all need to stay healthy and safe so we can enjoy another Super Bowl Victory.

That is a smoke screen. Some GM wants him to drop.

We also have DJM, KA, and Kmet as mentors for a young wide receiver who needs structure. This reminds me of Randy Moss when he entered the draft. He slid down the first round, and teams passed him because of off-field issues. We passed on Moss. Let's not make the same mistake and pass on this kid. If Nabers is there at 9, I say run, do not walk, to turn in the card.

  13. I think there will be games where this new KO ruling is the deciding factor. Teams that figure out how to use it to gain field position and KO return TDs will have a huge advantage.

Is Hightower capable? Last year, we were ranked 22nd in special teams. That's not a wow factor. I was not impressed with his resume when he was first hired.

There will be teams who will figure out plays off of this new ruling to maximize its potential.

A player can holdout, but can't go back to college as far as I know. They can re-enter the draft the following year.

Yes, you and 'Kill' are probably right. I thought it changed recently with the NILs (allowing players to earn money from their sport before turning pro), but trying to research the question, it I am finding reports that the team drafting the players sustains rights to that player for one year. If they do not sign him, or trade him, after one year he can re-enter the draft.

I still don't like the fact a player can screw a team who drafts him!

But then again, I was a die-hard Colts fan growing up in the 50's and 60's and still find myself pissed off at Elway. (Damn, I have held a grudge for over 5 decades. LOL)

  15. 5 minutes ago, killakrzydav said:

NFL can do nothing about NIL. Not a damned thing. Its a college issue.

Think of chick sports. If you were a star one of these powerhouses, would you go pro to have to work a second season in a foreign county to make 1/10 of what NIL pays you?

It's good for college sports.  It's going nowhere.

I agree. However, the NFL can do something to prevent/discourage a player who enters the draft, is drafted, and returns to play another year in college instead of playing for the team that drafts him.

  16. 2 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

it is definitely causing that problem, but it will only be a problem this year. Going forward, more players will wait a year to come out, but they will enter the draft eventually. So this is the only year that pays the price for everyone to shift back one year?

Some players will still opt to enter the NFL Draft early with college eligibility remaining. Then, if they do so and find they are not happy (with the team that drafted them or maybe they thought by coming out early they'd be the top player in their position drafted only to find out they slide down the charts) then they could always return to their college team.

So, as long as there are players leaving college for the NFL "early," the problem could remain.

  17. I worry that the NILs will create another problem. Some college players are making millions of dollars from NILs. Let's say they are eligible to play another year in college but enter the draft. They are drafted by a team they don't want to play for, for any number of reasons. (This happens quite often but until now they had no options) Now, with the NILs being an issue, some of those disgruntled players may return to the college teams, continue to rake in the money from endorsements, and reenter the draft the following year.

I think the NFL needs to eliminate this before it becomes a major issue.

I would say if a player commits to the NFL and is drafted, then decides to stick it to the team that drafted him by returning to his college team, he should be prohibited from reentering the draft the following year. If the NFL team that drafted him pays a penalty because of his callous decision, then he should also pay a price!

Yeah, I call him Lord Poles for fun, but truly believe he is going to make us a winner.  IMO, he is the best we've had since Jim Finks.  Below, is an excerpt from an article from The Atlantic I found to be outstanding.  It tells the whole Justin story, without mentioning Justin at all.  The whole article is great.

Poles went on to say that every individual has his own timeline, and some players have to be allowed time to develop to “work through some things.”

“But when it goes too far and too long, your locker room knows,” he said. “I always keep that in my mind. If I’m gonna ask those guys to take ownership of a bad game, a dropped pass, a missed assignment, I think that should be reciprocated from the front office and coaching staff as well.”

I read the complete interview. It's an outstanding article. I have to agree 100%. Poles is the best GM the Bears have had since Jim Finks.

  19. I was giving you grief over the expectations you now seem to have. (yes, using caps and such to make a point and not because I am mad. Believe me, if you ever really piss me off, you will not have to interpret my post, you will know.)

I can remember you saying you didn't know which QB you preferred. You'd have to check the tapes.

The very next day you said you had it figured out. Caleb was the guy. You watched the tapes. If we disagree, all we have to do is watch the tapes. Watch the tapes, Watch the tapes. Over and over, trying to pound it into our empty skulls that you know he is the guy because you watched the tapes.

You made it sound like he could walk on water. You kept reminding us how he was generational, once in a lifetime. Worth umpteen #1s.

So I couldn't resist pushing you a bit because now you are saying he will need time. Not to expect the finished product the first year.

    That I actually agree with.

I was giving you shit because until recently, now that we are pretty sure Poles will draft him, you seemed to have much higher expectations.

I posted the stats about Peyton & Andrew to show that two of the highest-rated QB prospects over the past 2 decades struggled in their rookie seasons. Hell, Peyton, one of the best QBs of all time, threw 26 TDs and 28 INTs! Both Luck & Manning's completion %s sucked. They had a lot of yards gained, but because they threw a ton of passes.

If I was serious when I threw an elbow into your ribs, saying I expected a GOAT performance from Caleb the first year, I sure as hell wouldn't have posted Manning and Luck's stats from their rookie seasons proving just the opposite.

  20. First off, I've told you, but you do not listen. I am not MAD about Fields leaving the Bears. I think it was a big mistake, but I trust Poles to do what is best for the team. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Fields as a starter for Pittsburgh. At Wilson's age, there will be an opportunity for Fields to start during the season. When he does get a chance, I think they will be hard-pressed to sit him.

Best QB prospect in two decades! Can't miss prospect. Generational. Worth more than any package of a half dozen #1 draft picks. Poles should be fired if he doesn't select Caleb. Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah

Now you are trying to lessen my expectations for this UNBELIEVABLY GIFTED GENERATIONAL PROSPECT?

Sorry. With the vast improvements made this off-season to help him in the transition, I expect more than what you are suggesting.

  21. 26 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

Nah, Manning came into a team with nothing, Luck's team was already stocked. Caleb should be at least decent in year one. I think what you hope for are flashes of greatness, and if they are inconsistent, or come with rookie interception mistakes, thats OK. What you dont want to see is consistent mushy oatmeal.

With all of the hype Caleb has gotten, with everyone saying we'd be idiots to draft anyone else, and forget about a historically loaded trade of draft capitol, because Caleb is so Damn special, GENERATIONAL, I expect a hell-a-va lot more than flashes of greatness.

(I might add, if all we can expect is "flashes of greatness" why did we just give Fields away to Pittsburgh? He provided us with "flashes of greatness." We let him go because we needed more than "flashes" and expect more from Caleb.)

If Fields had been given the improvements that Caleb is being given, would he have had greater success? IMO, YES.

Pittsburgh will be very happy they got Fields.
