One thing about field position that I rarely if ever see discussed is that when the opposing team takes the ball on their own 20 (lets say) the defensive coordinator can afford to gamble on first down. If he guesses right, it puts them into a passing situation where the defense dictates tempo. And if they guess wrong, it's just first and 10 on the 30.

Or if the DC guesses wrong, it could be an 80-yard touchdown. LOL

    Roll the dice. 😉

  2. From the strengths and weakness I found listed (see copy and paste below) the only thing this kid needs is some mass & strength added to his young frame. I'm sure our teams' nutritionist & Strength and Conditioning Coach has already set up a schedule for him.

    Quote

    Strengths

    • Possesses basketball-player wingspan with a frame that is sure to add more mass.

    • Pairs long-striding edge attack with vicious inside spin counter.

    • Impressive speed-to-power and dip-and-flatten techniques as a rusher.

    • Excellent feel for turning shoulders and eluding blocker’s hands.

    • Length and speed put him on top of QBs/RBs before they know it.

    • Out-reaches the tackle to extend and set the edge versus the run.

    • Shows unique ability to use his length to work around blocks.

    • Has pursuit speed to rack up tackles and tackles for loss as a pro.

    Weaknesses

    • One of the lowest career snap counts (505, per PFF) you’ll see for a draftable prospect.

    • Needs to get much stronger in both his upper and lower body.

    • Pad level can get away from him on inside moves.

    • Gets in trouble when run blockers sink into frame.

    • Could struggle against downhill run attacks without trying to elude blocks.

  3. It will be interesting to see what Poles has up his sleeve. The guy has been a magician resetting our roster and making us respectable for the first time in many years.

I suspect he will be watching closely UDFAs and players cut after the draft for help in the trenches on both sides of the line. OCs, 3Ts, and anyone who can protect our QB or sack the opponent's QB.

He will be a starter and possibly be one of the leagues best.  The Bears were one of the worst in punting and now elevated that phase.  A DE/DT or C might not even see the field.

From a write up on the Bears site, explains why we drafted a punter:

    Quote

Last season, Gill finished dead last among qualified punters in the NFL in net yards per punt at 38.0, which ultimately played a role in the Bears' decision to draft his replacement in Taylor.

However he will be an upgrade over Gill.

I can only assume that Poles agreed that the prospects in the later rounds of this draft were not very inspiring. LOL Without any EDGE or 3T he felt comfortable with, he went with the top Punter in the draft. I know many of you will be disappointed, but it is actually a guy I wanted on our team.

Guys who came in for Top 30 visits that are still on the board (since all three picks so far also had top 30 visits):

    • RB Dylan Laube (New Hampshire)
    • WR Jha’Quan Jackson (Tulane)
    • CB Nehemiah Pritchett (Auburn)
    • EDGE Austin Booker (Kansas)
    • CB Cam Hart (Notre Dame)
    • LB Bryce Gallagher (NW)
    • S Dadrion Taylor-Demerson (Texas Tech)

I have to believe Flus gets one defensive pick before all’s said and done. Booker is interesting to me because he has the kind of size Poles gravitates to, but his RAS was pretty average.

Out of that list, Booker would be my pick.

However, I also love the idea of drafting Mo Kamara.

  7. I watched Kiran's highlight video and, all of a sudden, had a mad urge for breakfast.

I never saw so many pancakes being served up by an OLT.

Then I read his interview on the Bears home site. I was blown away! Kiran is such an incredible guy, a true diehard Bears fan living his dream. Can you believe it? His chance encounter a year ago with Flus at a Golf Club, where he boldly proclaimed to him that one day he'd be sitting in his office at Hallas Hall. And now, he's living that dream.

We can see he has the physical attributes. But when you pair that with his desire to be the best, you have something special. He talked about meeting with our OL Coach and how he was anxious to get to work. Braxton, look out—you better believe you have someone who wants your job!

    Love the pick!

he definitely has things to work on. his potential and attitude have me excited, but no QB who doesnt grow from the day they enter the league will do anything. he absolutely has to go through that journey and grow and learn.

I believe he will do it, but yeah, he's a rookie right now, a really good prospect, but if he never gets any better than he is today, he will win some games but it will be a disaster.

My money is on him to grow, but the fumbling thing is an actual issue. And it's one that can be coached too.

Fumbles are far worse than interceptions.]

A QB is often victimized. WR blows a route and cuts in instead of out. Ball deflected off of WRs hands. QB is forced to throw ill-advised pass when time is short and his team is trailing. In each case, at least the ball is downfield.

Fumbles, especially in the backfield, are hard to blame on anyone else.

I would love to see a video showing all of the fumbles he committed in college. (I am sure our coaching staff has such a collection). Fumbles when running beyond the LOS? Fumbles during a strip sack? Bad exchange from center? What does he need to correct?

  9. I see where the Lions are printing money to build their roster. They just announced two signings.

    OT Sewell- 4yrs 112 Million

WR St Brown - 4 yrs 120 Million

Now, if it took 30 million per year to sign St Brown to an extension, what would it cost the Bears when it is time to resign Moore? 40 Million per year?

This shows how important it will be to have a WR1 on a 5 year rookie deal.

We also have to consider CW. IF he is as good as we believe he is, and proves it on the field from day one, you can bet by the end of year 3 he will be holding out for a renegotiated contract. Bank it!

We have to be prepared to maintain the roster Poles is building.

  10. I just saw another mock draft on nbcsportschicago.com. They mentioned a forth round pick as a solid OC candidate, one that could be a starter within a year. I don't recall anyone mentioning this guy, so I'd be curious if any of you have an opinion on:

Hunter Nourzad, IOL, or Penn State.

    Good? Bad? So-So? LOL

  11. I've watched every NFL draft since the early 1980s. That is when I begin getting pumped up for anything NFL: training camp, preseason games, and finally, the season to start. I'm totally addicted. This year has taken on an even greater sense of urgency. Like everyone else, I don't think I have ever felt this excited going into the draft. Let the season begin! 134 days and counting!!

If you dont respond harshly to me, I wont have to say anything.

That's the problem. You have been super sensitive ever since your issues with Stinger. Just because I said you were the only one I knew of who was trying to put a positive spin on the ND game doesn't mean I was busting your balls. Hell, there are over 8 billion people on Earth, over 340 million in the US. I'm sure there must be others who share your opinion. 😉

Please, just lighten up. I am a super passive individual. I could never troll or flame anyone. At 75 years old I have never once been involved in a physical altercation. I have always taught my kids to turn the other cheek. So you are reading me wrong. I am not the enemy! I'm a cuddly teddy bear. LOL

Cut it out, read what I write. Thanks.

    I agree. Cut it out!

Every time I disagree with you: (choose 1 or more options)

    a) I miss read you.

    b) I disrespected you.

    c) I flamed you.

    d) I am a troll.

Give me a f***ing break. I can't disagree with you without you insulting me and accusing me of trying to pick a fight?

Yes, you admitted it was a bad game. Then you try to put a positive spin on it, saying he improved in the 2nd half. Maybe ND, with such a big lead after scoring 3 TDs on CW's INTs in the 1st half, was playing a more conservative game in the 2nd half? Prevent D. Substitutions? No, he didn't quit. But with one TD in the entire game, it is hard to say he turned it around in the 2nd half.

It's no big deal. Let's not argue over such a stupid point when we should both be looking forward to Thursday night when CW holds up a Bears' jersey with the #1 on it.

you must have, since the USC offense only managed two field goals in the first half, but scored two touchdowns in the second half, after going down 24-6 in the first half. No one quit. Certainly not Caleb.

Williams threw 3 interceptions that day, but he also had a 62% completion percentage and threw for 200 yards.

Every QB and team has bad games, but Williams didn't quit or collapse, he continued fighting, and had a better second half than first half, showing grit and competitiveness.

Yep, he went 23/37 and threw one TD and three INTs for 199 YDS. Everyone, including CW, says it like it was. A BAD game. No one except you tries to make it sound positive. It wasn't. He had a bad game—one game of shame over the course of a brilliant three-year college career.

I like CW and have high expectations. The article listed is very positive. It points out how three top NFL quarterbacks had a game like CW's ND fiasco. They certainly prove that one bad college game does not make them a high-risk prospect.

That is a great article. It starts off on a negative note on Williams, but don't be fooled. It shows the similarities between Williams' terrible game against ND and the really bad games that Mahomes, J Allen, and L Jackson had in college (and how those games, just like the ND game for CW, caused some concerns on draft day). Basically, it says three of the top QBs in the NFL today had games in college that compared to the ND game, but it certainly misled the naysayers.

This very detailed article is well worth reading for those wanting to load up on info on Williams before Thursday's draft.
