I'm assuming that Trevathan's days are numbered as he ages. He's been out a lot with injury. This might be his last year in Chicago, as the window opens for the team, so it'll be Smith and ________ in the middle. Kwitkowski will have to step up to stay, and this new ILB will push him at both ILB and on special teams. Either Kwit will take the next step, or the new guy will grow into it, or we will be drafting another ILB soon.

I'm reading more and it seems like he is a special teams ace. If he does develop into something, and Smith is set to replace Trevathan in a year or two, this could be a shot across Kwitkowski's bow too. Pace must feel good about Lynch and Bullard. The Lions leapfrogged us to get Alabama DE Hand one pick before us. I wonder if we would have taken him if he'd been available.

totally. he's quick and shifty, but not a "burner" not a straight line speed kills guy - but plenty twitchy to be good in the slot.

He's not THAT fast. he's in the high 4.4s - hes small too, but what he is is productive, and ultra competitive. He fights for the ball and has excellent hands and body position. In college he had back to back years with over 1,400 yards, and 14 and 18 touchdowns.

It wasnt much of a trade up - more like taking our next year's 2nd pick early this year. The price to accelerate the pick was a 4th. So the price wasn't our 2nd next year, that's just the pick we made, the price was one of our 4ths. If hes the slot receiver I think he is, we did well.

well, pass rushers in the 3-4 can come from anywhere, but in a base defense, no matter what alignment you're using, you're rushing four players. We're so used to the 4-3 alignment, we think of two edge rushers, meaning each defensive end. But in a 3-4 base defense, you're going to be rushing your three linemen, and one linebacker. One thing about the 3-4 is you can mix up which linebacker youre going to bring. But usually, you have a best pass rushing OLB, and that's the guy you're going to send most of the time. For us, that's Floyd. And the pass rusher on the other edge of the 4 man rush is... Hicks! You wouldn't take two pass rushing specialists at OLB. I mean, you wouldnt pay the going rate for an all pro pass rushing OLB on both sides. Because unless you're blitzing, you're using one of those guys to do something else rather than rush the passer. And if you're paying him like an edge rusher, and asking him to cover, which might not even be his strength, then you're wasting that value. So if the Bears were going to bolster the pass rush on 3-4 base sets, they'd have looked for another DE, maybe Vita Vea, who I think would be amazing for us too. A good part of the time, especially in situations where we need a pass rush, we're going to be in nickel. That's a four man line. Floyd and Hicks will be the toughest players to block. A pass rushing specialist who puts his hand on the ground is the player to add in those sets. Again, more of a DE type than an OLB type tho. A little bigger, and stronger? So Lorenzo Carter, maybe, but not Harold Landry?

probably they were speaking to both, but you make a good point. If we had dropped down to tampas price, theyd still take TBs offer over ours.
