I'd rather have the LT who can anchor that position for the next 7-10 years instead of a stopgap that leaves us in the same spot in a year or two. You don't get many chances to do that so when opportunity is knocking it's best to answer the door. Decent OG are easier to find than LT so fill that in later rounds or with one of the FAs available.

Not interested in Colvin for all the reasons other already listed. Just doesn't fit the scheme.

Josh Barrett. I like him a lot athletically but he seems a bit raw (i.e. late reacting) in how he plays the position. Definitely worth a look on day 2. Had he stayed healthy ASU would have made a bigger finish at the end of the year, he was that important to their defense.

I'd be happy if we picked up Hester on the second day. I like the way he runs and (from what I've read) he blocks well too. I think he'd block as well as McKie but his versatility out of the backfield is what could really change things for us. I think he'd also be good enough to fill in as the RB if injuries depleted the roster. Of course, that's only if the Oline gets upgraded. I'd still keep Wolfe and get rid of Runnels or McKie.

I'll add one more thing I really want in a QB and that is accuracy in hitting a WR in stride. The QB needs intelligence enough (at least football smarts) to understand what a defense is doing but no matter what, passing windows in the NFL are often small even 30 yards downfield and the QB has to be able to get the ball in there. It's a big reason I'm no fan of QBs who come from systems that run a lot of hooks or sit-down routes. I'll name one guy, Akili Smith, who in college could only hit a WR when he stopped. He still got a big contract because of his measurables but couldn't do anything in the NFL. I'll also add that a QB who can't consistently complete passes to a WR in stride might not be that good at reading what a defense is doing.

The Hawaii WRs seem to be nothing more than just a replacement for Davis, same type of player. And since we already have that guy on the roster who knows the plays why make the pick? I agree with those guys being picked in the 7th Rd but I just don't see it as much of an upgrade. If he's there I'd rather pick Dennis Dixon with the plan to just put him on IR. We will be drafting another QB much earlier than that but we also have Rex to experiment with for one more year and Orton for two more years. If neither Rex nor Orton show enough to warrant being our starter in 2009 then we can cut ties with Rex, let the high draft pick take the reigns in '09 with Orton as the #2 and Dixon as the #3. We have a year to evaluate Dixon and if he doesn't look like he's got a future in the NFL then we can draft a #3 or find one in FA.

I get it and I like it. $5 mil bonus for a couple more years on the contract. TE is the most injured position in the NFL and having two solid players there is a huge boost to consistency on the offense. As stated above it also gives us more options in receiving since there are so many questions about who our starting WRs will be next year. It can also help our Oline since there are so many questions about who will be starting there as well.

I'd take Bryant Johnson too over Stallworth.

Everyone is not on board with taking Flacco in the first round, or second round for that matter. He's a project QB IMO, one with some good physical talents but he'll need one year at a minimum to contribute but likely at least two. My doubts are also based on his accuracy, or lack thereof and in the NFL that will kill you. Can that improve if his mechanics improve? Likely. Then there's the level of competition he's played against and it's nowhere near as fast as the NFL defenses. Think about what Danieal Manning was like (still is) when it comes to reacting to plays. If we go with a QB on day two then he should be in the mix but not on day one IMO.

No it's a 1 year 3mil deal with 1.5 mil in bonus. Rex can earn a total of 5mil if he hits performance incentives. I would bet being the starter on week one is one of them.

Maybe a valid point but I still remember Orlando Pace running down some DB after an INT. I think he chased the guy about 50 yards and tackled him. So while I agree the 40 time isn't a defining stat for an OT the slow time does point out that his quickness and athletic ability might not be as good as people thought. This is important for a LT (which is what we need) because at times a quick DE will get the outside edge and the OT has to run with them and push them behind the pocket. Slow feet won't allow a guy to make that play. In this case the scouts have to look at other tests and definitely see what's on film against first rate pass rushers. More important for lineman I think are the splits when they run: 10yds, 20yds.

I don't think we're drafting Flacco. Too much hype linking the Bears and Flacco which means there's a high probability JA is using him as a smoke screen of the QB we'd really like to have. Next question is how much cap space will we save when Griese is gone. Going back to LT2's excellent cap analysis it seems we'll take a hit of -$100k when he's gone. I doubt he gets cut before the draft as that would not help us in anyway. Will we be able to trade him for a late round pick after the draft? Or if we draft a QB early in the draft could we trade Griese on day 2 of the draft? He'd make more sense for a team needing a 3rd string QB than going with a 5th Rd draft pick.

I'm thinking there was more of an agreement that he would not get tagged by them when he signed that 1 yr contract. He lived up to his end of the bargain and played great all year. He's just too talented of a player in that offense for them to allow him to just walk away. To put it another way: If the organization was willing to tag Asante Samuel then they'd be willing to tag Moss.

If the Vikings sign Berrian he'll love catching passes from Travaris Jackson. Unless money is far and away better than other offers I suspect BB will look at the big picture as far as who is throwing the ball.

I really think we're going after Bryant Johnson. He's young enough to have his best years ahead of him. Physically talented enough to be a better overall WR than Berrian and he's probably going to cost less.

I thought the tag was gonna get placed on him but I was wrong. Although we'll never know I'm really curious what JA's limit is on the salary he's willing to pay BB.

I hope your wrong. 1200 yds does not come anywhere close to impressing me. It's a measly 75yds/game.

Unless we make a trade for someone like McNabb, my preference is to re-sign Rex and let him and Orton have open competition for the starting job. I see no real reason to keep Greise around. He's capable of keeping a team afloat for a few games but he is on the decline. Rex or Kyle still have potential and enough physical ability (i.e. strong arm) to improve. IMO the arguments center on the likelihood of that happening. The third QB slot should go to a draftee that we can develop for a year or two.

On a defense designed to funnel plays towards Briggs he should get a lot of tackles. He's a very good player but I don't think he's a great player and I don't want to break the bank for him. I suspect that while our offers are serious they are also a courtesy to Rosenhaus. Briggs will test the market, there's no reason not too. I don't expect him back. This could also be JA blowing some smoke about our need at LB so teams aren't so certain what we're looking at in the draft. Berrian could well be tagged and Rosenhaus knows we're wiling to do that since we did it last year and worked out a deal with money upfront for Briggs (child support?) before the season started. I like Nfol's assessment of the contract situation for Berrian and I think there could be some common ground found between the two sides. Especially if incentives are good enough (i.e. Pro Bowl) to increase the contract significantly. Harris. He played hurt all last year winning Troy Aikman's respect along the way. It was refreshing to see a guy go through that for the team. Now Harris has to make a decision because his injury history does raise significant questions about his long term future. Is it worth it to take a huge payday now or does he wait and try to get a record setting deal next year. IMO JA is just being smart in taking the risk of the long term signing now feeling it's going to enable him to save millions. Ayanbendejo...first special teams player to make $2mil/yr, not with the Bears but he could get the best signing bonus ever for a special teams player. Will that make him happy? I have to agree about one thing: how are the Bears coming up with that much money to throw out in bonuses?

We offered Berrian a contract so that gives me an indication that we are leaning towards tagging him. Otherwise BB would have little reason to consider our offer right now. Tagging him opens up a chance to trade him as well if he can work out a deal with the new team. The fact the FA market is so thin means there's a better chance for us to trade him.

I don't think we go to his asking price of $2mil but he'll get an offer well over 1 million, maybe adding in big bonuses for Pro Bowl and special teams ranking. I'm talking about the Bears own rankings of tackles by special teams players.

I thought I read that Segal is Brown's agent, same guy that represents Moose. The 4 you mention are Rosenass clients.

I'm not buying it. Dan Snyder would have extended Archuletta's contract. I agree there's a lot of money to go around and if JA and his capologist continue as they've done in the past they will spread out the hit with a few roster bonuses due in years 2 and 3 for some of the contracts.

Alex lobbied but when it came time to practice he practiced. When it came time to sit on the bench he sat on the bench and for the most part kept his mouth shut during the season. Of course he openly said he wanted to start several times but why have a guy on the team if he doesn't want to play? Then after all that when it came time to play he played well. So while everyone knew his frustration with the demotion he kept working like a professional. There's a lot of value in having a guy like that on the team. As far as Bazuin I'm ok keeping 4 DEs on the roster. We must have a decent 3-man rotation at DE and if anyone of the top 3 get hurt somebody has to step in. Bazuin was hurt the entire offseason so we never saw what he's capable of but I think his high motor will fit right on the D.
