I'm never real comfortable with when the "experts" say this is a deep draft, shallow draft, etc. Hell man, nobody knows! You could turn out to be totally right. Hopefully a "sure thing" slips to 14 and makes it easy on Emery.

Me neither but this is precisely the scenario I was trying to use as an example yesterday. If all three are still there and we can get something significant and still get one of them (assuming Emery rates them like we do which was your point) then we should move down.

I guess I mean conventional wisdom to use your term. If we pick a player at a position and it feels like it's a big reach (player would've been available later) or if there are several guys at the same position who are equal value to a number of others, I always feel like we should get something if we can. There was some talk about this on Long and Shea was clearly a reach. Long likely would've been gone but who knows? In any case, just because the Bears don't agree with my assessment of the situation doesn't mean I won't initially be "mad" about my perception that they didn't maximize their draft slot.

I think if we could predict the WTF moment it wouldn't be much of a WTF moment. But I can almost guarantee you it's going to happen. Emery follows his own rules and doesn't seem to take any of the national media rankings into account. So far that's produced both good and bad results although Shea is still an "incomplete" in the grade book, at least as far as the team is concerned. I'm hopeful he's solid at LB but I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, his WTF moment will come in the seconnd round this year, not the first. That's all I'm willing to commit to.

Interesting. I still doubt what you say is true but it sure does tell us something when we're dead last. I'm sure the transition of GM's has a bit to do with it though as the new guy feels no loyalty to the old guy's picks, so he's able to "move on" a little easier. But with that said, we can all agree Angelo left this team in sorry shape, particularly in the OL. His first round picks were gawd damn brutal overall which is when you ought to hit at a much higher level. Of course Emery is only one out of two so far in the first round and many here whined about Long when he was taken.

I had to break my own rule and look it up because I thought it was double digits too. He was drafted in the 8th round which obviously doesn't currently exist. It just goes to show you how important those UDFA pickups could potentially be. Although I think scouting is so much more advanced now that the best 100 players are probably gone in the first 150 picks. Obviously Tom Brady and dozens of other examples show that not to be 100% true but I think teams are better prepared, in general, to get to the best talent quickly.

No surprise there. I liked it better as an "event" because one of our group was a Vikings fan and there were 2 years in a row when they busted on getting their first pick up to the podium in time. You just can't buy that kind of entertainment! I miss Tice...
