We discuss Verse vs Turner and Poles may like Latu better. I think he surprises up.

I like all three, but Turner is the only freak.  Verse could be another Mack though...

well you surely cant fill a team with only first round picks, so your point is well taken. But when you look for less than obvious players, some teams take those amazing athletes that arent football players, and Poles seems to take players, even as their RAS scores are still high. I cant think of any other workout warriors that cant play on our team.

Back in the Lovie days, we took to many "men in shorts" players.  When you draft football players first, it's a winning recipe.  I love it when Poles and Flus talk about football character...

yeah thats what Im saying - that Poles doesnt just draft for RAS scores, although he does seem to like that kind of player, but they are also productive players.

I love "Rudys" like Sanborn, but I prefer high character high motor athletes who are also intense football players like Sandborn. So Im greedy, I want both :)

You gotta have a mix.  The low ceiling guys push the high ceiling.  Coaches utilize the shame to motivate the studs...

I think poles is drafting for dollars value meaning his top picks are going to be what costs the most on the open market. Therefore the pick at nine, or second first round pick if we’re lucky enough to make a short trade back, is either an OT, DE, or WR .

Something crazy though, is that IOL cost is on the rise and OT is on the decline.

Braxton Jones isn't going to be replaced. Because we are in the position to draft a top 10 T doesn't mean we will go that way. (Possible but not probable)

That's your opinion.  If one is highly rated by our guys, it's possible due to it being one of the three premium positions...

I think there will be games where this new KO ruling is the deciding factor. Teams that figure out how to use it to gain field position and KO return TDs will have a huge advantage.

Is Hightower capable? Last year, we were ranked 22nd in special teams. That's not a wow factor. I was not impressed with his resume when he was first hired.

There will be teams who will figure out plays off of this new ruling to maximize its potential.

I bet our old boy Dave Toub comes up with something...

I almost always agree with your analysis, mostly just because its excellent LOL but in this case I'm not sure. I don't think the new rules really make muffing a kickoff any less dangerous or costly? And Velus coughs the ball up on contact a lot too. And I think he's a dummy LOL

But he is definitely a fast dummy!

He's definitely a dummy, but he can be a Cordarrelle Stewart. Stewart was highly thought of before they figured out he couldn't adapt to the NFL.  He found a niche as a ramrod.  Jones can be the same for us.

Seen where Carolina along with NE and Washington are predicted to have the worst records next year. Carolina could give a  top 35 pick next year because of the 2023 trade that gets us their second pick.

The 2023 trade by Poles was an amazing amount of  players that still has a pay day.  Wright- Stevenson, D J Moore- Caleb Williams and top 35 pick.

    Lord Poles...😎

  9. Yeah, I call him Lord Poles for fun, but truly believe he is going to make us a winner.  IMO, he is the best we've had since Jim Finks.  Below, is an excerpt from an article from The Atlantic I found to be outstanding.  It tells the whole Justin story, without mentioning Justin at all.  The whole article is great.

Poles went on to say that every individual has his own timeline, and some players have to be allowed time to develop to “work through some things.”

“But when it goes too far and too long, your locker room knows,” he said. “I always keep that in my mind. If I’m gonna ask those guys to take ownership of a bad game, a dropped pass, a missed assignment, I think that should be reciprocated from the front office and coaching staff as well.”

  10. I'd like to enter the Caleb fray.  I fully expect to see as many wow plays as Justin had last year.  But, I expect also some rookie failures along the way.  The most important thing with Caleb this season, and it's not even close, is processing and utilizing the entire field.  That, IMO, is why Justin is no longer here.  If see Caleb throwing people open and hitting deep crosses, I will be a happy camper.  The first half of the season will probably be a lot of ball control TOP type of offense to protect Caleb.  The second half of the season should bring a little more attacking...

I will say taking Caleb buys more time on winning but the K Allen  trade pretty well sold me on win now. He is likely a one and done. I don't think Poles pays him 20+ for a couple year extension at his age. Next year tags should be around 25 and 22.5 mil for WRs according to OTC. So it's very possible we could have him one more year.

Consider this.  Allen is entering the twilight of his career.  What if he sees staying as his best chance of winning a Superbowl?  I would think that would drive his price down.  Also, with us being in such great cap position, why couldn't we pay him if he's ultra productive still?

  12. I don't agree that Poles and Flus are in win now mode.

In following the theme of the post of win now, after drafting Williams, I think an EDGE rusher is key.  Winning teams have multiple ways of getting to the QB.  Dexter and Pickens should progress in their second year, which could be really nasty up the middle when you remove Billings in passing situations.  Dallas Turner would be my pick, due to burst and change of direction abilities.  I'm usually not the type to trade up, but it would be really cool to get into the second round somehow.  With that, Poles can trade a couple of next year's picks to move up.  There would be value in this move because some really good receivers and IOL are available.  Lastly, with our cap situation still being good, a team might give us a good deal on an EDGE rusher they can no longer afford our one is simply cut.

Thats how I see it too. Penix is a stud, but hes older, so maybe his future ceiling is lower, having already grown, and i think he has a bunch of injuries, but the ball sure does come off of his hand hot.

Also the three you mentioned are the ones who read the field the best - the do the best "quarterbacking"

How do you evaluate a 23-year old QB playing against 18 year olds? He didn't really do anything until he was 22, and then was throwing to Odunze, Polk, and McMillan with a top 20 OT the last two seasons.

I thought he was pretty good at Indiana

The kickoff team can't move until the ball is caught or hits the ground, so if Velus does muff it, he will have a good 3-4 seconds to gather it up before having to worry about someone being in his face.

It's rare that someone mishandles a kickoff, let alone not have time to recover.  If we're talking punts, that's more like it.

I don't think he's involved in any personal decisions. Once they brought Warren in, it walled off the family.

Why was he there then?  He even stated in the interview, that it was past his bedtime.  It also came up, somewhere else, that he was consulted before the Keenan Allen trade.  From my perspective, a billionaire cannot be a fly on the wall. They always get their taste.  I find it impossible for Poles and Flus to be their authentic selves knowing George is lurking.

  16. Just read an article in The Atlantic, talking about how this Bears era feels different.  When I saw the headline, I got the happy feeling vibe.  When I started reading, I got the same old McCaskey family vibe.  George talked about how he was at the combine when Poles and Flus met with Caleb.  Of course, good ol George had to say that he stayed in the back of the room and kept his mouth shut.  My question is, why the hell are you there in the first place?  Warren wasn't there.  Why does George need to be?  He says all the time that it's Ryan and Matt's job.  I just don't like any McCaskey being involved in talent conversations or acquisitions.  Just stay the hell out of it.  It's crazy, I like what George had to say about Caleb and Poles and Flus, but just couldn't stand it coming from him.  It just shouldn't have, given our history of them F'ing things up.  Just be an owner George, you know nothing about the rest of it.

Pix, thanks.  I absolutely hated this when I first heard about it but have come around.  It’s putting the return game back in play but with hopefully fewer injuries and penalties.  Kickoffs have been boring as hell for too long.

The only thing I hate about this new rule, is that I'm going to have to explain it to everyone I talk to...🤯

I like it.  I need to see it in action but this is a positive step forward and very appropriate considering Hester enters the HoF this year.  Maybe enough people finally watched his highlights and realized how exciting those plays were and how much they missed them.

You can see it in the summer league, whatever it is called.  They adapted it off of their rules.
