You get a year to develop/evaluate a stud QB who will still have tremendous value a year from now if Fields balls out.

Stop it, please. It's been 3 years and Fields is not going to "ball out." He doesn't see the field, can't make quick reads or throws. He's an athlete plugged in to QB position. Maybe keep him this year, but for God's sake quit the ifs and buts on Fields and draft a QB for the future. And yes, I still want Poles to trade that first pick for a franchise-changing haul as well.

Bears lose, draft #9.  They got 2 top 10 picks! That is the silver lining. You feel ok taking a QB knowing you have a 2nd top 10 pick.

I'm still trending on trade that no. 1 overall for a boat load of picks now and in the future. Hey, we could still get a QB at 9.

All I will say is that I absolutely, 100% do not want Caleb Williams. He's a prima donna punk and horrible for the locker room. It would be like when the Bears unnecessarily drafted Cedric Benson when they had Thomas Jones, and the entire locker room hated it. Internal mutiny.

He skipped the bowl game. Lacks mental toughness. Apparently his teammates don't like him. Not a good leader, or the Trojans would have been better.

Great arm talent. Bad intangibles. Pass. Aside from that, trading the #1 is much better for the Bears because they need more than one rookie to take a leap.

Agreed. Williams is a prima donna and I want us to get a king's ransom for the no. 1. There are other QBs in this draft that can sit behind Fields while Poles builds a balanced, deep team.

In the game against Denver Fields had 335 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT in a loss.

What happened to being able to carry a team on their back and will them to a win?  🤷🏻‍♂️

I think we lost that game.

Speaking of former QBs, Mark Sanchez, who called the Browns game, was on with the HERD with Colin Cowherd.

He says in a town like Chicago, keeping Fields and bringing in a rookie wont work. He says then Fields doesnt have the confidence to know hes the man, and it will implode. I think so too.

    @ 6:40
    "Not in Chicago" "No chance"

He also says that you can keep Fields and put guys around him, and rely on his running like Cam Newton.

I think there is a plan on how to defeat that now and we've seen it the past couple weeks.

The headline says Sanchez says to move on from Fields, but I must have missed that direct quote in the clip.

Saw that too. And I agree with you that Fields is a good runner, but teams have figured out he does not read Ds and he holds the ball too long. If, as Sanchez said, we can't have him and a rookie QB too, then I guess Fields has to go. I feel that Fields wouldn't be such a distraction.

Tell me unequivocally who the Bears will draft that will play better than Justin has been. Stop using the ‘I can’t predict the future’ smoke cover and provide some stats like Adam does or support your opposing viewpoint with some numbers.  Who in this upcoming draft class has a better WINNING record than does Justin at the same point in his career?  What are you seeing from the play of Williams, Maye or any of the ‘top tier’ QBs that makes you sure they can do it?  And if they can’t, why are we going to draft them knowing they too could/would fail?

And if you qualify it with ‘well Flus and Getsy’ will be gone so they new guy will have a better chance because of it’, then I’d counter with ‘what’s to say Justin couldn’t of given the same circumstances’?  “What if” (for example) they hire Harbaugh and he decides he can make it work for Justin with the caveat he’d want them to draft McCarthy as his potential heir apparent?  Harbaugh knew he could make it work for Krapernick and he did…Justin is unquestionably more talented.  And Harbaugh couldn’t beat him in college.

I get your point Alaska, but do you think Justin will ever take us to the Super Bowl? I don't and he hasn't shown the HE has IT to beat teams. Hell, he was spotted a ten point lead yesterday and did nothing in the second half to convince me he's a winner. Talented, yes he has talent. QB talent? Nope. I think the smartest thing for us is to keep Fields, trade the No. 1 pick for more picks (another no. 1 for next year) and then draft a QB latter in the draft.

And Harbaugh is not going to be an option here because Warren was his enemy when he ran the Big Ten.

Yeah there's a shrinking violet theme to his work.  He's also not Justin Fields fast or strong.  I've come to realize how spoiled I've been watching Fields run.

Yep, if the choice is keeping Fields or drafting Williams, I keep Fields.

I agree 100%. I've watched him against several of the top ranked teams, including my Notre Dame team (who also has a habit of losing to top ranked teams, damn it). He seems to choke against high level competition. I will be curious what he does against #16 ranked Louisville on 12/27.

He's not playing that game. And I agree, i'd pass on him as no. 1.

If we draft a pocket passer, and keep Fields, which offense do we install and teach all offseason?

Something like that is way beyond the coaching staff we now have. Bringing in a competent group has to be a priority this offseason.

This is not Mitch Trubisky again, even though Mitch technically had better passing numbers.

Agreed. Justin has exceptional athletic ability. I just don't think he'll ever develop into a top QB. But hey, maybe the OC from the Raven could do it here?

What I think we should do is keep Fields ( in case he finally develops) and draft a prospect not one of the first 2 picks. That way you double down with 2 shots at the brass ring. Having 2 QBs didnt seem to hurt when the Packers had Farve and Rodgers sitting. there are several prospects in the draft this year. Its not Williams-Maye or bust.

I think you presented a lot of the excuses for Fields in the first part of your post. No denying he has faced hurdles as a pro, but still I havn't seen anything that says he's developed into a QB that can overcome those and still produce. He just lacks the ability to see the field and react quickly with the passes.  Taht being said, I do agree with your last part. Our two picks can set up the franchise, and us fans, for a very good future.

So if you could trade Fields for Lawrence, Burrow or Stafford, you'd keep Fields?

Or maybe your point was that stats don't tell the whole story, in which case I totally agree.

All I can say is that if you watch the tape, it tells a very different story than the numbers do. At least to my eyes?

And look at how many games we've won the three years he has been our QB. Numbers don't win games, players do and Fields is not a winning NFL QB and I doubt he ever will be, no matter the coach or oline or receiving corp. Yes, you guessed it, I'm done with Fields and I wanted him to do well, but he can't do it for all the athleticism he has.

Since we're using 'what ifs' I'll ask you this.  What if we end up hiring a coach like Jim Harbaugh to take over as HC next year?  And (assuming he can pick up where he left off in SF) he's able to properly use and develop an offense that caters to FIelds' skillset?  We know he was able to get to a Super Bowl with a less than average QB like Kaepernick so surely he could do the same with a 'slouch' like Fields?

Or what if, we trade Fields away.  He goes to a team with a functional OC/HC in place and flourishes? And we draft any of the QBs that 'can't be missed' and they flop? Because either they are A) not able to adapt to the NFL or B ) the Bears keep Getsy (or someone like him) and we're right back to where we started but one year later?

I get the impression you trust Getsy more than you do Fields.  I only say that because you said he is 'hiding Fields' and you openly wonder why?  I ask, is it Fields or Getsy that is the problem? So far the offensive brain trust that was Nathanial Hackett (Getsy was his right hand man in GB) hasn't done really well in either Denver (as HC) or more recently as the OC in NY.

Last night there was a quick clip of Poles in the suite and they showed him where he was talking to someone to his right and motioning with his hand in a circular fashion as if to resemble a repetitive motion.  Some on social media have speculated it was him asking something to the effect of 'the same thing'?  This was right after the offense had done its gazillion-th screen pass to the outside.  There are confirmed reports that came out this week that Poles essentially asked Flus why he wasn't using key players more during the Detroit game.  This was in response to Flus telling the media that the newly acquired Sweat was on a rotation.  We saw last night that Sweat played a lot more than he did the previous week.  I'm curious now, especially with the bye coming up, will we see a more open offense allowing Fields to make or break it and play more to his style of football because Poles will ask Getsy and Flus about it.  I suspect that Poles will want to see Fields in his full potential for the remainder of the season and not hemmed in by Getsy's "protection" calls.

Three years in and Fields is still not a reliable NFL QB. Those numbers from MNF are pathetic and if he hasn't done it consistently yet, it is not going to happen. I think Poles knows it at this point and we'll bring in a new QB via the draft. All the excuses are just that, excuses for the guy that can't be trusted to make the necessary reads, get rid of the ball in a timely manner and put the team on his shoulders and get that gutsy win. Nope, that is not Justin. Get rid of him or bring in his replacement and let Fields play his way out of the job next year, but he will because he doesn't have the skills to be a top NFL QB.

yeah in the stats its gonna look like Fields did a lot of good things. But with the exception of the scripted first drive, it's all smoke and mirrors.

So I think that the scripted first drive has been good for us a lot this season. Is it possible that Fields takes extra time to work on those plays so he can read them faster?

I think maybe that's his problem, he isn't processing enough?

Yep, Fields cannot read the D and the coaches do not trust him too , so that is missing from the offenses arsenal.

No shit, I think we get a top 3 pick and also a top 10. Ideally the first pick. NE, Giants ,Wash, or even Az may be desperate for a QB. I think Poles will set this franchise up with another miracle type trade. Chargers have a potential great QB and they are losers with a bad coach and shaky roster. To be fair they have a lot of injuries but so did we. Poles came from KC and Cunningham from Philly, both of those teams built the team and then got their QB.  Liken Fields to the situation where KC had Alex Smith and as the 3rd QB taken, Mahomes sat for a year. I think he is using the same build plan. It may still be Fields but I think he also brings in a QB prospect to fall back on if Fields fails. We are one offseason from having the rebuild almost complete. He may think somebody is the real deal and draft him #1, he set himself up to make that choice in the next yr. Had we had better coaching and execution, we could be talking about a 5-6 record and would be having a different conversation.

I think he has to win next year to keep his job, so does drafting a rookie guarantee that? Not hardly , so I think he gets a better coach and adds to the roster then keeps Field and a QB prospect. Mahomes was the 3rd QB taken in his draft, Hurts was pick 53 the year he came out. I think he doubles down and hedges his bet on the right QB.

Isn't Fields up for a new contract next year? THAT is going to complicate keeping/paying him and drafting a top QB. Just saying. Having Fields and a top QB drafted would be ideal.

I want new coaches but if they  win 3-4 games that may not happen. Flus was a good DC but never had to carry the load of scrutiny threw a terrible losing steak. I would love him to just be the DC but to far down the rode of loses to make him look good again. The most important thing is does the team ball out for him and I dont think they have quit on him. If he blows games lie Sunday and that may not be the case.

I do believe the coaching staff is gone at the end of the season. So many dumb mistakes from these "professionals" that everyone watching knows they were dumb. I just can't see Poles brining back this group of incompetents. Games that were thrown away by coaching errors have been too many. And my God, you hear Flus on an interview and you'd think we were a nose from the Super Bowl. No fricking awareness of reality.

    Interesting perspective here:

In the game against CAR, with the Bears holding a 3pt lead in the 4th quarter, Bagent had a 1st down passing attempt, a 2nd down passing attempt, and 2 3rd down passing attempts when trying to close out the game. 4 pass attempts while the team rushed the ball 6 times for a 40% pass rate.

Then against the Lions, in the 4th quarter, the Bears rushed 15 times and Fields had one pass attempt (the incomplete to Scott), 6.25% pass rate in the 4th quarter.

So the Bears had more trust in Bagent to allow him to pass the ball 40% of the time than they have in Fields to close out the game.

The Bears went 20:14 of game time between passing attempts from the 3rd to 4th quarter.

The last time DJ Moore was targeted was 11:54 left in the 3rd quarter. Moore got no targets for the last 27 minutes of play.

That is why it is hard for me to blame Fields, even after the strip sack safety. One passing attempt, and it was the deep ball that was thrown perfectly to Scott. Why is Getsy not scheming up plays for Moore and Kmet in crunch time?

How about Kmet, he had 4 targets, all in the first 14 mins of the game. Kmet was not targeted again for the last 46 minutes of play.

    What a shit-show. Embarrassing.
