  1. I have never really backed Angelo, yet I don't have a problem w/ this move. In fact, I am thrilled about it. St. Clair was simply not good. He looked decent enough for us, but that is relative when looking at the rest of the OL.

I like the idea of moving on, and rather than just signing the same hacks, we have allowed SC to walk and cut dead weight in Metcalf. We have little on our depth chart at the moment, but I will hold off on blasting Angelo until after the draft. In my eyes, this makes OL as absolute top need going into the draft, which is fine by me. I always feared that if we re-signed SC, we would lower OL on our need list, and be content w/ mediocrity. Now we are in a very likely position of going after an absolute upgrade.

Maybe it is a risk, as we could still miss on OL in the top of the draft, but I am willing to take that risk. We need upgrades. That status quo is not enough, and SC was part of the status quo.

I see us now taking maybe two tackes in the first 5 picks. Maybe a OG Johnson/LSU in the third that can play OG or OT. As other people have said, lets get younger and bigger and bitch slap the rest of our division.

  2. After his combine, Johnson would have went in the 4th probably, or in the late 3rd.

I've been critical of him a lot, but with his losing of weight, it makes me think he cares.

I have read that a few nfl scouts project him as a RT

  3. I'll bet you see them go hard after Shaffer.

He was just a guy that knew the system. I think he was only a one year starter and just would have been a backup his last two years. I dont blame them for not wanting to pay 3 mill a year to a two year backup. That means that one of the first two picks will be a OT, but we still need a back up or one years starter.

  4. The Browns' contract offer to free agent OL John St. Clair is reportedly for three years.

The Chicago Tribune doesn't have financial terms, but we can probably assume that it's worth more than the $4.5 million Chicago has on the table. St. Clair is tentatively expected to choose a team by the end of the week.

As much as we might think there brain dead at Halas Hall, Im sure they have someone in mind to go after if SC signs with Browns. Maybe Ijodije(I cant spell) can play OT

  5. double post

Well if you like St Clair its good news he didnt jump on the contract offer right away, must be close enough to the Bears offer, to see if they will match or get real close. The longer it goes the better chance he comes back, and since we dont have many options at OT, I want him back.

  6. NFL | Multiple teams showing interest in H. Johnson

The San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears are teams who have shown the most interest in Louisiana State OL Herman Johnson during postseason events.

    NFL | H. Johnson's draft stock rising

    Tue, 17 Mar 2009 05:35:01 -0700

Louisiana State OL Herman Johnson has lost 26 pounds since the Senior Bowl, down from 382 pounds to 356 pounds, and as a result has steadily risen up the draft boards of many teams, according to his agent Albert Elias.

Does anybody know the people we brought in last year for a visit, if we actually drafted any of them? I did drugs when I was younger and cant remember.

Bears | Nicks to go through private workouts

    Mon, 16 Mar 2009 23:49:58 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears will put North Carolina WR Hakeem Nicks through a private workout.

  7. Bowman moving to free safety

One of those players is 2008 fifth-round pick Zackary Bowman, who is being moved from cornerback to free safety, a position he played at New Mexico Military Institute before transferring to Nebraska.

The 6-1, 193-pounder possesses speed and athleticism, but has struggled to remain healthy. He suffered knee injuries in each of his final two seasons in college and then sustained a season-ending biceps injury while making his NFL debut last Oct. 19 against the Minnesota Vikings.

In that game, Bowman scored a touchdown by recovering a muffed punt in the end zone and then later preserved a 48-41 victory by intercepting a Gus Frerotte pass with :40 remaining in the game.

A main reason the Bears are moving Bowman is that they have far more depth at cornerback with Tillman, McBride, Corey Graham and Nate Vasher than they do at safety.

“We just feel like there’s an opportunity now to see if that’s [bowman’s] best spot to compete,” Smith said.

With Payne unable to practice, 2008 fourth-round pick Craig Steltz will line up at strong safety and recent free-agent acquisition Josh Bullocks will work at free safety with the No. 1 defense during minicamp.

Steltz will also see action at the free safety position this week in practice.

“He has great instincts playing the ball,” Smith said. “Just look at the interception that he had [last season against the Lions]. There’s not a big difference between the two. We want two guys with similar talents to be able to drop down into the box. With Steltz entering his second season, we’re still figuring out exactly where his best spot is.”

    Bennett in the spotlight

At wide receiver, 2008 third-round pick Earl Bennett will be given every opportunity to win a starting job opposite Devin Hester. Bennett played sparingly last year as a rookie and did not catch a pass, though he did show marked improvement in practice over the final six weeks of the season.

“We’re going to let Earl have a shot to see exactly what he can do,” Smith said. “He finished strong last year. He works hard. He’s a good player. Now it’s time for us to really see what type of player he is.”

Omiyale will work at left guard

While free-agent acquisition Frank Omiyale can play multiple positions along the offensive line, Smith said that the 6-4, 310-pounder will work exclusively at left guard in minicamp.

“If a guy is versatile, you [move him around] later,” Smith said. “Initially, we want to lock all of our guys into one spot, and we’re going to start Frank off at left guard first and go from there.”

While John St. Clair remains unsigned, the Bears still hope to retain the veteran offensive tackle.

“John is one of our guys,” Smith said. “It’s been the same message throughout about John. We like John. He had a heck of a year this past year. Once you become one of the guys, we want you around.”

If Bowman can stay healthy that might be a good move. Just becuase Bennett didnt play last year doesnt mean he cant play, it means Lovie aint that sharp. Look at Graham and Beekman, didnt play two years ago and looked descent last year. The more bodies we have at positions the best chance we have at finding someone that can play.

  8. They might. They have a new owner and a new coach, and all new coordinators. Their top WR is a suspension waiting to happen, and their franchise qb publically wants out. They might want to stock up on picks and start over. I think the Bears would be a more attractive trading partner than the Lions though. The 1st pick is not a desirable pick, particularly with this qb class. The Bears pick at 18 is more desirable than either the #1 pick or the #20 pick. Second, Cutler to Calvin highlights would be on ESPN every night. He wouldn't have anyone to throw to in Chicago, so they'd be less likely to look stupid for trading him.

I think the 49ers would make even more sense. They have a better pick (#10) and more QBs to choose from in return.

I dont how having Calvin highlights would favor the Bears? Having Bennett on this team might make it more attractive to Culter but Detoit can offer more and I dont think the coaching staff cares where Culter would want to go.

  9. I'll trade this year's first pick and next year's second for Cutler. Bringing in a young, Pro-Bowl QB would surely be worth it.

There not going to want Orton, so it will definitly a first and a third this year? The problem is many teams will be bidding for his services and we wont have enough to offer. Detroit is making a play and they have higher picks and more of them.

  10. I read a story on the first 10 WRs taken in the last 4 drafts, there is only 10 players that made an impact on there teams. Most were busts, with the court still out on some of them. With that much risk at the top end of the draft, I only see the Bears taken a receiver with the 1st pick if Crabtree or Macklin are there. Probably wont draft one till the 3rd or 4 th round.

  11. Not bad but I'm not a big Urbik guy anymore and Lang is projected as an OG in the pros. Keep Lang and instead of Urbik, put an OT in his spot.

We spent time with Urbik at the combine, and Lang is just a guy that will take some time, like many that later rounds will produce. Nicks and Byrd are excellent picks and also Veikune is as good as any of the later round DE propects.

  12. The criteria for this topic, is based on Watersfootball.com current mock draft. The 10 players I would most like to be Bears based on who is there with our first 3 rounds with only three picks. Our extra pick from the lost player thing I will be figuring to be a 4th round pick. I think there is alot of smart football people on this blog and a few dreamers. So the smart ones let me know your list so we can compare. I dont necessarily believe this mock is accurate just a basis for this topic.

    Macklin/WR

    Maualuga/LB

    Ayers/DE

    Britton/OT

    Nicks/WR

    Robiskie/WR

    Loadholt/OT

    Bryd/S

    Sidbury/DE

    Follett/LB

  13. :headbang We are all huge Bears fans and just like football, thats why were on this blog. I am a glass half full person, so I always think the powers that be are always doing the right thing. I thought they must be pretty smart to get us to a Super Bowl in 06 with a top 15 RB, a top 20 WR, and not much at QB, but the last two years I have lost my faith in Loveme, and JerryGM. We have had lousy drafts as a whole and make lots of mistakes with the personal. I think they have made bad desicions in the couching area also. So the half empty glass has creeped in. We are 16 and 16 the last two years. I want everything they do to turn out ok, because it will make my team a winner but that just isnt working out. They have this year to bring my faith back or I will be calling for there heads. They havent impressed me so far in the Free agency period, so my expectations are low. Maybe the moves they will make and have made will turn out good and along with a great draft, my faith will come back. As for Loveme, he has accepted the responablity for the defense, so now he wont have anyone to blame. I suppose in 05 and 06 I didnt have high expectations and they suprized me. Hopefully they can do that again.
  14. Gosh, I feel like I just posted this a week ago, and here I am posting it again? I must need to quit drinking or something. That being said, with the exception of a gimpy Orlando Pace, Barnes was the only real upgrade to St. Clair. So lets hope we ink St. Clair soon.

Here's the story from PFT. They make some unflattering remarks about Barnes that I was not aware of. I guess it explains why he was still available March 14th:

    RAIDERS REEL IN BARNES

Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2009, 6:58 p.m.

Earlier today, our friends at RaiderBeat.com reported that talks between the Raiders and tackle Khalif Barnes were back on, and that a deal could soon be done.

And soon is now — Barnes is a Raider.

According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, the Raiders have signed Barnes.

But if Clayon is serious when he says that the one-year with underachieving Barnes constitutes a “free agent coup,” we suggest that Clayton sleep off whatever it is that he’s been smoking or drinking.

Barnes was a chronic underachiever in Jacksonville, who nearly lost his starting job last year to Richard Collier.

Then there’s the whole “KKK Devil” thing, followed by the abandoned Mercedes that he wrapped around a tree thing.

So, yeah, they scored a real coup, John. Maybe next they’ll trade for Donte’ Stallworth.

But, hey, at least Clayton will get an extra-large fruit basket this Christmas from the guys at Priority Sports & Entertainment.

What do you think of Kiwame Harris? He was lousy last year but the Raiders signed him to a huge contract so he played well with the team he was at before. I think it was 49ers.

  15. 1. Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

    2. Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma

    3. Phillip Hunt, DE, Houston

    3. Brandon Gibson, WR, Washington State

    4. Johnny Knox, WR, Abilene Christian

    5. Joe Burnett, CB, Central Florida

    6. Tony Fiammetta, FB, Syracuse

    7. Robert Brewster, OT, Ball State

    Thoughts?

I like the two WRs, but if we resign SC dont see us drafting a OG high. We have the two starters from last year, Omiyale, and Buening. I think Duke would be a stud, just dont think the Bears will look at it that way. I dont see the starters from last year starting and hope the new guys are an upgrade. Have you read the stats on Knox, he has stud stats, and fast, just dont know if it will translate to the NFL. I like the FB, but see us drafting Gill/DT/ NW with the 6th or 7th pick. They have had visited him twice and has better numbers than anyone at the combine listed DT.

  16. It would cost us a 2nd to get him. Am I the only one who wouldn't mind loosing that 2nd??

I think he is a good receiver, but he is sucessful as a slot receiver on a 3 wideout offense. I think with decent wideouts thats Hester place on our team. I would rather take the chance at getting a possible one or at least a two in the draft. If we trade for him I dont think WR will be a very high pick and we have lots of them on our team already. He wont be as sucessful here without a true #1 on the team.

  17. I keep hearing people say we need a CB, to the point that some mocks I've seen have had the Bears targeting one in the first round, and I just don't understand where there is even room on this roster for another CB. It doesn't seem like anyone is being traded. Lovie has already spoken out about not moving Tillman to FS, and it seems like the staff is committed to keeping Manning at CB. Therefore, your present roster has Tillman, Vasher, Graham, McBride, Hamilton, and Bowman. Unless you can convince me you're ready to cut several of those guys outright, I don't see any place on this team for a pure CB.

My thought on CB is one we could move to FS. Jenkins/OS and Davis/Ill have both been mentioned as possilbe playing FS. Also Byrd/ Oregon has been mentioned as a possible draft pick. They all could play FS or CB. I think Tillman and Graham are the only frontliners on the team. I hope Vasher comes back as who he was 2 years ago, but he hasnt played well since they gave him a good contract. He has been hurt but that is not good either.I think it would add flexablity to our backfield if we could get someone that could play both.

  18. The last 2 players I have seen fall this far from grace prior to the draft are Randy Moss and Warren Sapp. Both will be 1st ballot. Smith at #18 is a no brainer and would actually be our best LT option.

Every year there is a top 10 type player that drops, we have to take him if he is there. Him not living up to the #1 pick status he once was, is still probably better than anyone we have now. If he only becomes a longtime starter instead of perenial all pro, I can live with that.

  19. Disagree - You don't get to the NFL by having any sort lof osing mentality. The Bears want to win. It's in everyones best interest.

It's does seem possible in light of the Cassell trade. Plus, it makes sense to the Cards to get any value when they can. They save 8 figures by trading him. And get to develop the talent they currently have.

Agreed, whole heartedly. What one person finds annoying, another may see as an opportunity to communicate their thoughts and share fellowship with friends.

Keep hope alive Stinger. This could happen for the reasons AZ54 stated. Heck, the Cards could have a guy in mind they really want our 2nd for and pull the trigger. Sometimes GM's just "gotta have em". I've seen wilder things happen.

Dont get me wrong would love it to happen, just trying apply logic to my usually positive attitude.

  20. You gotta fork over the cash for Boldin plus this guy is often injured. It's his style of play, the same thing I love about him, that gets him hurt. 2nd Rd pick is what I'd offer and I think if that offer is there on draft day the Cards will take it.

As far as the pipe dream that Boldin is available or that we'd go after him it's not unrealistic. The Cards have Fitz and Steve Breaston and behind them they have last years 3rd Rd pick Early Doucet. Breaston had 1000 yards last year. If they think Doucet is ready to step in and play (and my devoted Card fan friend thinks they do) then why wouldn't they trade Boldin now when he has his highest trade value? The alternative is to give him a huge signing bonus and $8-9 mil/yr at which point the cap hit for a future trade doesn't work in the near term? With the 2nd Rd pick they'd get they can draft another WR to fill in the 4th WR spot, or take one in the 3rd Rd again.

They just gave Warner $11.5 mil/yr and he did just fine without Boldin during the regular season and again when he went out in the playoffs. Maybe a lot of folks don't realize a big chunk of the Cards playoff run was done without Boldin but that type of thing catches the eye of a GM and head coach. If they figure they can keep 90% of their passing game effectiveness while using that 2nd Rd pick and/or free cash to upgrade their running game or defense by 20% they are going to do it.

I dont think they would give him up for a 2nd rounder unless it is a lot higher than ours. He can bitch all he wants, he cant go anywhere. He complained last year and didnt go anywhere. They are to many teams that need a receiver, to let him go cheaper than they think he might be worth.
