A story from Justin Fields rookie year came out over the weekend.  Andy Dalton was working the white board, trying to help Justin with the offense and looked up and Justin was fixated on his phone.  Evidently Dalton and Foles let him have it, telling him he was on his own.  ESPN 1000

I didn't want to start a jump on Justin thread.  Thought it was interesting though.

Being his rookie year I dont find it to be anything defining, he was not looked on to be the starter. He clearly proved he has a great work ethic, that could have been very early in that year.

I believe the title means what team do you want to play first ( season opener) since the topic today was the release of the NFL schedule.

Seems like many on the radio wanted the Vikings.

So you think the  Vikings should be the first team? I prefer non division teams for less importance if we might lose. As well as we look like a much better team it may take a few games to get up to speed.

I agree, and I personally dont know what that is, so Ill leave that to Poles and Waldron, and trust them to make the right decision. There is "common wisdom" going both ways so...

But if I had to guess, I say they put Caleb in right away if they play any starters at all.

He's going to start but may limit his playbook to start the year and run the ball more.

I have been to so many training camps for the Bears, going back to the dog days in Plattville. I can promise you this is nothing special. In fact, I bet every QB on our roster could execute that drill without a miss-step.

Now, what you should be excited about is the blurb I read on several sites, (the quote below from nbcsportschicago.com). It tells me that Caleb and Rome are already developing the "mental connection" in day one of rookie camp that legendary QB/WR teammates had to help them have HOF careers. Manning/Harrison. Montana/Rice. Unitas/Berry. Now Williams/Odunze. Yes, we have a lot to look forward to:

To be honest this is 15 throws at a two hour practice. Its like watching  a players highlight film, its just a small sample size. If you knew nothing about Caleb, a person would say this was nice but its just nothing special in the oversll perspective of s player.

Yeah, Im saying that if the result of the new rule is similar to how kickoff returns used to be then fine, but *IF* it turns out to enable a lot of cheap TDs *THEN* I will be against it.

For example if we had the old kickoff rule, but just moved the kick point back to the 20, and made the coverage team only be able to walk, then returners could "earn" TDs but it would ruin the game, and make that play too important in determining outcomes.

I am not predicting this will be the outcome, Im just HOPING it wont be.

It may start with a lot of success but then teams will adapt to it. I think it could help our team because of the speed options. I think the rules changes affecting defenses so offensivbe teams run wild is the joke, they take good football players out of the game because they are agressive. Dont like that.

Almost by definition there will be significantly more KR and therefore more KR TDs.  It will affect the outcome of games just as Hester did for us.   I like it because I'd rather not see the league beholden to the teams with the best QBs.   Keep it a team sport in all phases.  Poles thought enough of special teams to use a 4th Rd pick on a punter.   I still enjoy watching the kicks and kick returns precisely because of that unknown factor... be it a fumble, muffed punt, big return to flip the field, etc.

Good teams always seem to have a good punter , most the time a kicker that can make pressure FGs. Since the rules have changed, special teams will require better players to play because of potential big plays. I think Poles and Flus are paying attention to that. V Jones will excel at that or be gone, not any help as a WR. Dante Pettis is back and a unspetacular but reliable punt returner that adds speed to the WR room. 4.32 He had 9 punt return TDs in his college career. Maybe we can revive his career.

  7. Anyone see we signed UDFA Ian Wheeler to a 3 yr contract? Its not guaranteed so we can still cut him anytime. Dont know if this is true, only seen one post on it and it is not listed in the Bears transaction page.

Wasnt listed on NFLTradeRumors transactions page either.

That was probably a post by his dad. wishful thinking

They will definitely add another pass rusher - won’t be a great player but it will be someone. My guess is a Ngakoue will be back. They clearly need to upgrade next year cause outside of Sweat the line is pretty meh.

Rushing attack should be solid with Swift, Herbert Johnson but a huge pass to being #1 rushing attack was having Justin Fields. So no - I don’t think this is the NFL’s top rushing defense - solid, yes, but not top5.

Are you talking about Rushing Offense? or rushing defense?

  9. Last year we were the top rushing defense in the league, tied leading the league in interceptions with 22. Other areas we  were not very strong. When Sweat got here things started to change. The worst pass rush in the league got better. We lost Justin Jones ( a good player) and Eddie Jackson who IMO didnt contribute anything to the defense.

    What's different?

We will have Sweat for the whole year. He upgraded the play of everyone around him.

Kevin Byard is a better player than Jackson. 28 career intceptions in 8 years. A much better tackler than Eddie. They both are the same age and Byard is statiscally better in every area.

Young players make there biggest step in year two. Pickens, Dexter, Stevenson, Smith, Sewell. Also young players Gorden, Brisker, Hicks, and Sanborn are improving.

Resigning JJ was important for stability and leadership.

Austin Booker is the only rookie draftee that could help this year.

Sleepers to watch Jamree Kromah/DE and Kieth Randolph/DT could make the roster.

Walker played better once Sweat got here and hopefully play better. We have a new DC and DL coach in Eric Washington

We  still could add another pass rusher of which could be Yannick Ngokoue who has been rehabing at Halas Hall this offseason. He played below average but maybe one year at Halas Hall will upgrade his play.

Still lots of questions on Defence but the arrow is definitely looking up.

So traditionally our defense has played against a bad offense in practice. Now they are going to get some real competition, which should make them even better. Another added benefit of this offseason's acquisitions.

Last year we led the league in interceptions (tied with SF) with a poor pass rush for half the season. Now we have Sweat for the whole year and a baller at FS with 28 int. in 8 seasons. Caleb will be under fire every time we practice, that will make him better. Also 3 #1 WRs will make the DBs that much better.

  11. The Seattle O was similar to ours last year so players that were here will adapt quickly but new players will need some time. Of course the key to the season will be how quickly Caleb adapts to his coaching. I think he has a good work ethic and has  love of football that will get him there quicker.

  12. Sorry to hear about your mother, both of my parents have died but they luckily  made it till their late 80s and had health until their last few years. So the best you can wish for anyone is a healthy  long life.  Dont know the age of everyone one on here but Im 71 and pretty healthy minus a broken neck and 4 joint implants . Pay attention to your health because its harder to recover when you get older. Eating better food souces has extended my life. I havent eaten at McD for over 9 years now. Fast food needs to be kept at a minimium becauses its not healthy food.

Finding a better option at Center is still at the top of my list.  Regardless of all the other talk about pick this guy or that guy, the reality is Caleb appears to be happy to be in Chicago and it wasn't clear to me early on that would be the case.  I can't argue with Odunze either.

I also realize pairing a rookie QB with a rookie C is a really bad idea.  After Fields was cut and it was clear we were all Caleb or nothing pinning my hopes that we'd get one of the top two or three prospects at C was fantasy.   But we could we have at least had a Day 3 prospect in the chute instead of a punter.   This punter better be eye opening good.   Bates needs to be sufficient at C and Waldron needs to be better at play calling than what we've had to endure recently.   Williams needs to play on time for the most part and we should be ok.

Williams has yet to prove himself but if he is as advertized , he gets the ball out quick and will make the OL  look better. With the limited picks and taking Rome at 9, we werent getting a rookie starter at center. I would have liked a prospect like you but an all pro type punter will help win a couple of games. We had the worst play at the center in the league last year, an average center will look like a pro bowler compared to last year.

There's different ways to slaughter that hog if it's important enough.

Poles is clearly a smart man, but has had a few fails along the way,  he thinks Bates is good enough. I will trust his judgement until he fails again. I dont think he is ignoring the position.

  15. These are not the top options we signed but the top 4 got money . The lowest rated of the four was Aaron Brewer and he got 3 year 21 mil. Chusenberry is getting 12.5 mil a year.  Since we only have about 6 mil left in the cap, Poles allicated the money at other spots. He took two questionable options that wasnt gettting money contracts. It definitely an upgrade but we will see if it was enough. I think Bates will end up the starter and at least we have an experienced vet as a backup.
