How do Bears current personnel looks for a 3-4 conversion?

 

We don't really have a big nose tackle, though I suppose I could see a bulked up Ego Ferguson or Paea in that role.

 

I can see Houston and Sutton working as DEs. Not sure of Jared Allen's future with the team.

 

I think Bostic deserves a change at an ILB position and Christian Jones and Khaseem Greene deserve consideration (though I'm not sure where they fit). This would be the last chance for Shea McClellin to show something, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Then I guess you would convert Willie Young to OLB - he's way too light to play 3-4 DE, right?

I have a big problem with that. We have to massively upgrade the defensive side of the football and should focus our off-season their. We have added a defensive head coach and one of the top DC's in the league and we need to rebuild that side of the football. Yes, we can't totally ignore the offense but my theory is Bears are going to stick with Jay and the talent / existing weapons. If I am focusing on a position on offense, it is the area of speed wideout (I also hope that Wilson can make steps forward) and the oline (clearly if the right QB is there you go that direction too).

 

Defense needs loads of help and I think we have the right guys to help fix it but we certainly need players and lots of them, specifically in the secondary and at LB.

I think I heard somewhere this weekend (one radio show or another) that Fangio isn't married to the 3-4 and could run whatever he thought was the best fit for our talent. So while we're all assuming it'll be a 3-4, there's no guarantee.

You can't contend with crappy LB play in a 3-4 and with that roster at LB, you are in for what I'd call the crappiest LB play. That would be a gigantic recipe for disaster. We have the 7th pick in the draft and I expect that we'll use it on a defensive anchor (and if not that, than a stud LT).

I do think that if you're making this transition, you need to add at least one 3-4 LB veteran starter who can help with the transition and line up the defense (none of our LBs has even played 3-4 as far as I know). Maybe someone like David Harris from the Jets? You probably want to add one pass-rush specialist OLB in the draft.

Yeah, and that he chose us over them which is a huge positive.

 

From a HC and DC perspective, pretty hard to top Fox and Fangio across the league. From Trestman and Tucker (LMAO) to Fox and Fangio. Wow, what a difference a year makes - and GB still sucks.

I'd actually like that. I think that LB group would do well, and their athleticism would help overcome learning hurdles along the way.

Agreed with this as well. I think Bostic and Jones would be incredible in a 3-4 beside one another. And I think Young would prosper with a little head start. Finally, what the hell else can we do with SMC? He is either going to succeed as a 3-4 OLB, or fail.
