Draft Value Analysis

Featured Replies

Using my mega sophisticated draft value scoring system, using the CBS Sports Big Board, Pace is a boss right now. In 3 picks he has increased the value of our draft by the equivalent of a mid 3rd round pick. We basically got Goldman and Grasu later than their grades without having to trade up to get them. I compare the slot they were projected in, and add or subtract the draft trade value for those slots to where they were actually drafted. Then I take the cumulative total to come up with the overall value of the draft.

Name/Pick/Big Board/Value

Kevin White 7 - 7 = 0

Eddie Goldman 39 - 27 = +170 pts

Hroniss Grasu 71 - 61 = +57 pts

Total = +222 (+ mid 3rd round pick, #74)

What I also like about this draft is that we have filled clear needs and still basically got BPA (or close to it for our needs). All 3 players have 10 year starter potential, and White has a silly high ceiling.

Derron Smith and Jake Ryan in the next two rounds?

Are either a QB because I believe Pace said he believed in drafting a QB every year didn't he?

I think he indicated it could be a draft pick, an UDFA after the draft, or a FA cut from another team. He did say he liked taking a flyer on a QB every year but he was sort of vague as to the means of adding that QB. That was the impression I got.

Here is my updated draft value analysis, 5 out of 6 picks were great picks with 1st-3rd round grades.

Name/Pick/Big Board/Value

White 7 - 7 = 0

Goldman 39 - 27 = +170 pts

Grasu 71 - 61 = +57 pts

Langford - 106 - 86 = +78 pts

Amos - 142 - 77 = +170 pts

Fabuluje - 183 - 311 = -18.2 pts

Total = +456.8 (+mid 2nd round pick, #44), So Pace got the equivalent to an extra 2nd round pick (#44).

Honestly I have no issues with this draft. Or the manner in which he handled FA and other personnel issues. I'm even OK with cutting Marshall loose now that we have his replacement. Younger and faster at that. And cheaper.

And the coaching staff he assembled is downright amazing.

There was a long way to go but we've made nice progress.

Ya this team really has come a long way. If not for a tough schedule Id say there was an outside shot at a wild card. Schedule is brutal though.

OT is the only huge need I see left on this team' but then again I'm higher on guys like Ball, Rolle, and Mandy than most.

I think a couple of days at looking at our players before the draft, may have influenced some of our draft picks.

2 defensive players on one of the worst defensive teams in our history?

What that says to me:

We didnt draft an edge rusher, because we have them on the team.

If Goldman is our NT that leaves Ratliff, Ferguson, McDonald and Jenkins to play L and R DT positions and that bodes well for our roster.

Amos was drafted for depth, but see him taking some snaps from Rolle down the role, could be a sneaky good pick. Also would say still some hope for Vereen.

CBs has plenty of depth past Ball, Jennings and Fuller. Hurst and Al L-J have upside. Also I think Glenn may stick.

I think our RT is already on the roster, Tayo is a long range prosect,we will see how it works out. There are still some OT free agents we could still go get if they dont think we have that guy on the roster.

I think Ola could be the RT or RG and move Long out there. Or long to LT and Bushrod there.

FA Joe Barksdale is still out there to grab.

Bennett is stuck here whether he wants more money or not, and think we have enough bodies behind him to be ok at TE.

RB- Forte will have less carries as we give other guys snaps to keep Forte healthy. Rodgers and Langford could add some change of pace to what other teams are use to with us. Langford has some speed.

QB- We are stuck with Cutler but dont think that is as bad of a spot as some seem to think. We run more and limit his TOs . We added speed and a true slot WR and I think our WR position is much better position to succeed than last year.

Using this method, Minnesota had the best draft from our Division, but they were aided by having 10 picks. We were second, then GB, then Detroit. Detroit only selected one player later than their projected slot (their last pick). GB's only good value pick was Hundley (and he will never play for them). Randall in the first was a slight reach and Amos is actually comparable and we got him in the 5th. Same for Detroit, they took Tomlinson in the first, yet we got Grasu in the 3rd. They took Abdullah in the 2nd and we got Langford in the 4th.

The only drawback to this draft was not having more picks.

My buddy who has ties to the Seahawks organization sent me a text after the Langford pick "Bears are killing it".

None of this means anything now but absolutely looks good going forward.

Well in an indirect way it does, GB doesn't get any better and with basically zero FA activity, I think they have actually taken a step back. Detroit lost Suh and some other pieces and are definitely worse this year compared to last. Minnesota acquired Mike Wallace and had a decent draft, so they should be better this year. However, based on our coaching changes (scheme changes), front office, free agent acquisitions, and now draft, we clearly have had the best offseason.

To me you have to win 365 days a year, not just during the season. If you don't have a good offseason, that can easily translate to the regular season.
