I think it more a combination of the fact the QB is "supposed" to be the team leader and everyone has the unknown anxiety of a new season ahead of them. This is a chance for Jay to prove me and other doubters wrong by stepping and taking the challenge. Both as a team leader and legitimate QB.

I think that nobody on this board knows how Cutler leads.

I do not think Jay would have been voted a team captain if indeed the "perception" of the media that Jay is not respected by the team was true. If anything I think this shows the team still has faith in Jay. Time will tell if that faith is misplaced.

Actually I believe they are. That was pointed out in one article regarding this choice for Captains. Gould arrived in 2005 and Forte and Cutler arrived in 2008. Seeing McPhee and Rolle as the defensive captains leads me to believe they were chosen more for their overall seniority (Rolle) and respectibility for performance already (McPhee). Otherwise you'd be picking a rookie or second year player just about anywhere else on the defense. Save Ratliff - who is serving a few game suspensions.

 

Edit: and thinking more on this wonder why Allen would not be chosen? Is it because he's not considered a starter? Which I think is requisite.

This. Much of what people say about Jay outside of the organization and locker room is perception, what matters is what his teammates think of him and their level of respect. None of us are with the team or in the locker room and see Jay on a day to day basis. Media perception loves to latch on to the negative, and will jump on or invent controversy to sell papers, get hits on web pages, blogs, and ratings. I've never met him, never been around him so I can't say if he's a good leader or not, all I can judge him by is what he does on the field. There is much there to be desired since he got here but he isn't as awful as he's made out to be either. For him the skills, the talent, the arm, is all there, but his random brain farts are what has kept his potential from being realized to this point.

 

If his teammates trust him and believe in him that's what really matters.

You are correct. And not to belabor this anymore than necessary BUT the same point was made about Urlacher when he was let go. Although he wasn't able to perform as he once did, he was still a leader on the team. He wore the "C" for many years. Many here couldn't wait to see him go for whatever reason, mostly due to his outward attitude. So there in that comparison we compare the two. External perception: similar. Internal leadership qualities: Unknown. Diminished/lacking skills to maintain/be All Pro: Wash.

Thank you! Everyone can think this, that or the other thing. The media loves to show Cutler and his jerk face. All that matters is what his teammates think.

 

In years past maybe he wasn't very much of a leader, who knows. It looks like this year he may be taking on more of a leadership role.

Actually why I said it means something coming from Marty..... Or he could have been told what to say but something about Marty tells me he wouldn't say anything he doesn't believe.

 

 

Cutler may have not been a very good leader last year. He may have seen the light (that Pace and Fox will send his ass packing) and stepped up his role.

 

Lets not forget his contract is for 120 million over 7 years, if he gets cut he is not going to earn that 120 anywhere else. Cutler has a lot of money riding on making the Bears keep him.

 

Not that he needs anymore the guy has made a shit ton.

 

 

 

Everything I have heard for years about Jay is that he is a good leader. He is smart, puts in the work, and gives effort. His teammates may not always like him and it has been noted. I think Jay lacks as a people person. He is not going to buddy up and give you slack or hold your hand (Hester). He will call you out and it may be snarky. When he gets frustrated, you can see he forces things. He fails to succeed when things break down around him (line not giving time, wr running wrong routes, poor play calling, etc) We all know and see these deficiencies. Jay takes the hits and keeps coming back whether it's getting sacked, his players/coaches throwing him under the bus, the media, or fans. This guy deserves a statue so the world can egg it forever. He may not be a Manning, Brady, or Rodgers, but he is our QB. Time to step up.

Exactly. In a way I like him a lot. Tells ppl exactly how it is. Regardless of who he's talking with. Sure beats 99% of the PC bullshit most athletes speak these days.
