Jonah Jackson Contract Extension

Thuney is getting one too - presume this basically helped with the cap and gave Bears basically the prime of Jackson’s window while he is under contract.

Thuney probably gets a 2yr extension is my guess - probably 40M. Maybe a 3rd year that is like dead money.

Not real thrilled with this completely unnecessary contract extension for a guy who was not very good last year and now has a $25 million cap hit in 2026. Let’s hope he lives up to it.

That was his only bad year ever. I'm sure they have evaluated his health. As as contracts are becoming, I'm sure instead of waiting until next to extend they think their saving money.

Makes me think Thuney is on  the one year deal.  The same they did for Keenan Allen.  4th round pick, pay his salary and gone.

I guess if he plays all pro, they can tag him if they have the cap.

Anyone else think Thumey could play out this year and go back to KC? I can see that happening.

That would actually mean nothing.  He's trade-able either way.  Same with Jackson.

Why would they do that? You don't acquire talent and then trade it. I think they want the 3 IOL to stay together for the 3 years as they develop draftees behind them. I expect an addition if at least 2 OL, one early and one late.

You would do it for the exact reason I stated earlier.  If you are able to draft his replacement and he is looking good by the trade deadline, you can trade Thuney and get your draft pick back.  It's more attractive to the other team if he has extra time on his contract.  You instantly get younger and more cap friendly.

Only in Chicago can we go from "we've needed a Pro Bowl OG for years"... to 3 weeks later.... we can trade our All Pro OG this year because we've trained his replacement in 6 mo.  It's all theoretically possible but I think my odds of winning the lottery and buying the team are better than the odds of this team building a rookie into a Pro Bowl OG by wk 8.   I'm hoping Poles prefers to keep good Oline depth for an entire season, and maybe even into the playoffs, over having a 4th Rd pick.

Life goes on.  It's all about the ifs.  If you draft the right guy.  If that guy pans out to be the guy.  If the right trade partner comes to bid.  The Patriots built a dynasty on this.  Why not, if it's the prudent thing to do.  No need to be a smartass...

Let me say that the possibility exists but no way in hell they do that. They are trying to win here, build depth thru the draft and he can take over when a spot is open. We finally have a potential good OL and break it up for a 5 th round pick?

I live in this message board every day. My wife is very clear that I am not a sane person for following the Bears as I do. I’m not here because everyone says the normal boring stuff.   I’m here for the debate.

I don’t mean to offend anyone.     Regardless I still think it’s funny that it only took all of us three weeks to begin discussing what we needed to do to trade away the All Pro guard we just got.

I say that as a fan who was happy we got Shane Waldron last year   I’m not without clarity on exactly where my football acumen lies

I’ll be back for more tomorrow.

I think the basic difference between your two positions are whether it would happen at the trade deadline this year, or next year? Thats not so different, I think you both acknowledge the possibility or a trade, and the probability that he'll be here for two years?

But yeah, in general, we will need to get used to the idea of trading good players who have more in the tank to make room for drafted rookies - thats how you build a sustainable team, and its not something weve been particularly known for. And it will be hard for people who are fans of the players to let go of guys who are still valuable?

Last year our OL sucked, now this year we add potential a top 5 IOL, and we will draft a couple OL to start building depth on the OL. If we add high level draftee just that much better . To think we are going to start trading players? That's insane.

Nobody said we needed to trade anyone.  It was simply stated that we could and that's a positive option.  Agreed on Waldron and my own sanity...🍻

Don’t know if this is behind a paywall (I don’t think so) but interesting background and story on the Jonah Jackson move.

Good article. I don't think the bad year in LA affects him going forward. There will be aot of rushing to the right this year with Jackson and Wright.
