DABEARSDABOMB
He missed mandatory camp and now he is starting training camp hurt with a non football injury. Hope it isn’t serious but I’m a little concerned his ego has gotten a bit too big - need to see him show that hunger. I know he wants a huge new deal just one year after signing. If he wants it - go out and crush it - go be an all pro db! Less talk - more production. Will be curious how BJ and Dennis Allen handle cause this could be a test of leadership - but hopefully it’s nothing.
jason
Wasn’t he the dude who previously said something about football can wait because he wanted another day with his kid?
BearFan PHX
Yeah and he made that comment the other day. In spring of 2024, he got his new deal, I think he was the top CB paid at that point? If not certainly in the top few. Now he's saying in an interview that a lot of CBs got paid more and it might be time to renegotiate. After one year? I dunno if that has anything to do with it, but i am thinking the bears want to get their other CBs some reps. And while Im not predicting it, and JJ is a good player, i wont be shocked if he gets traded. probably not, but its not impossible. You dont chest up to the new coaches their first year. If you look at how his contract is written, we cant do it this year, but next year and any year after we can trade him and it costs us basically $5M against the cap to do it with $16M of increased cap space - or we can keep him for $21M a year against the cap if hell play for that. Stinger226
JJ gives the impression he is underpaid because of the large contracts different CBs are getting in the present. He is presently listed as the 13th highest. Truth can be seen in what the next 3 yrs pays him and pays other CBs listed ahead of him. 63 mil in hand money Sauce Gardener; next 3 years 64 mil Stingley Jr- 64,5 mil Jaycee Horn- 53 mil Jalen Ramsey- 60 mil Patrick Sutain- 53 mil A J Terrell- 56 mil Denzell Ward-82 mil Marlon Humphrey- 55 mil Trevon Diggs- 55 mil Marshon Lattimre - 36.5 mil Tyson Campbell- 43 mil L'Jarius Sneed- 63 mil I will throw out the top salary and worst with the concept those are out of line. The average for the other 11 is 57 mil. The top 4 make 64.5-64-63-63 the rest are below 60 mil. So by over all salaries, JJ is 5th in paid money for the next 3 yrs. I would say JJ is not the best CB in the league, I would rate him a top 5 CB and that is exactly where he is getting paid.
Bears4Ever_34
It's probably nothing major. He could be sick, or have one of those "personal" issues that always conveniently occurs during off-season practices. I don't think he's dumb enough to demand a new contract already after 1 year, but I guess we'll see. He totally seems like a guy who just doesn't put much value in off-season programs at this stage of his career, similar to guys like Aaron Rodgers. He's always going to be looking for an excuse to miss as much time as he reasonably can to save his body for the games that count. You'd like to think he'd show more of a sense of urgency to be there for the new staff, but whatever..

Yeah, he said something like "The Bears can find another CB, but my daughter can't find another father", as if he's the only dad playing in the NFL. I just think he's making comments, and like you said, he's not a big offseason guy, so i think the Bears don't mind sitting him for several reasons, and it's just good practice to get your other CBs reps if you think 2025 might be JJs last year for example. Or as a proactive move to give guys experience in case of injuries.
AZ54
JJ has always maintained that he works out in CA in the offseason to be near his daughter and nothing has changed in that regard. He's done that for years and still become one of the better CBs in the NFL. That and some casual comments about other CBs getting exorbitant contracts doesn't mean he doesn't want to play. GMs have just gone crazy stupid with spending lately and concentrating so much money on so few players will not work out well IMO. I don't like guaranteed deals either...it leads to laziness and poor habits. I think it's just human nature when we have nothing to work for. DJ Moore being exhibit #1 last year. DJ got caught up in the dysfunctional offense and quit on Flus like several other players. Last year is an outlier, he has always been consistent in his career with lots of bad talent. Doubt you see anything close to that this year with an accountable HC demanding excellence. Cleveland is paying Denzel Ward 82 mil over the next 3 years. Garrett and Watson contracts are blown up to . They are crazy for those kind of contracts in Cleveland. Like you said this is normal behavior for JJ over the last few yrs, he will be here ready to play very soon.
