Indianapolis' spring cleaning - er, make that wholesale renovation - has already removed a few high-profile names from the roster, and they're looking to move another in defensive end Dwight Freeney. And according to Len Pasquarelli, the Bears are very interested.

 

A trade for the Colts' all-time leader in sacks might cost quite a bit in both trade pieces and finances, and the 32-year-old is hitting the decline of his career - Freeney would cost $19 million against Indianapolis' cap, and even if traded carries a $14 million base salary, an amount that would put a huge dent in the Bears' available cap space, possibly preventing another move like a big name receiver.

 

Then there's the production - Freeney's cited in the article as having double-digit sacks in all but three of his seasons, which, while true, he had 10.5 in 2008, 10.0 in 2010 and fell just short of the mark in 2011. He's made the Pro Bowl each of the last four years, but he's definitely not the player he used to be.

 

What do you think, should the Bears pursue Freeney, and what would be the price you'd pay to get him?

 

 

I think Freeney would be a good pick-up. However, I don't see anyone in the world who would trade for him given the cap impact of a deal. The Colts are either going to have to cut him or keep him cause if those cap numbers are right no team in there right minds will make a deal for him.

Freeney is a nice signing if the Bears spend there money on other areas and Freeney is cut.

One of the rare instances on this board when everyone is in agreement. Bad idea because of salary and age. If he takes a lot less, and the trade difference is negligible, then yes. But that's not going to happen. Scratch the idea.

Need to leave him alone with what it would cost for him, traded or just cut. We do need to get younger and take a chance on a younger player like Mincey from Jacksonville, whose Arrow is pointing up not down. Or Wimbley.

I'd happily take him if he were a free agent and available at a reasonable price.
