There are some similarities between the two when the Bears first drafted them. They both had accuracy issues. They both had to correct their footwork to address those accuracy issues. They both would miss opportunities to hit wide-open receivers. They both had trouble going through their progressions, which led them not to see the wide-open receivers. They both tended to take flight rather than step up in the pocket when the opportunity presented itself. They both tended to hold the ball too long, hesitant to throw even when there was ample opportunity. I could list more similarities, but it is really not necessary. The bottom line is that Caleb is slowly correcting those issues with the help of an outstanding HC and his staff and is proving to be the franchise QB we drafted. It is a slow process. But he is progressing. In contrast, Fields has yet to show any progress in eliminating those issues and will eventually be an overpaid journeyman backup QB. I can't believe a GM/HC hasn't considered converting him to a RB/KR to use the one thing he does exceptionally well.

excellent article - says everything. Caleb's not some middle of the pack Trubisky type. He's a guy that shows many plays of being elite, but he still makes inconsistent errors too. Its one thing to try to get a QB to elevate their play, its another to have a QB who already does that, and just needs to iron out inconsistencies. The flashes say he is going to be great. IF Caleb is disciplined and has good coaching (both of which seem evident) then he will make fewer mistakes and all that will be left is an elite QB.

Interesting - I hope this isnt bad news on TJ Edwards. Maybe it's special teams help? Or just playing with the bottom of the roster, which every team should always be doing anyway.

For me, I can see the road ahead for Caleb - I see him improving every week in the mechanics of being an NFL QB. His footwork, his eyes, his timing get better each and every week. For example, Tim Jennings and Chase Daniel both praised multiple plays this week from Caleb that were incomplete. I think some people just watch the game, and count completions and the like, and others watch things like footwork etc. I think we all see an incomplete package, both in Caleb and the offense as a whole. And that's fair. I see that too, and I agree with it. But if you look at Caleb's trajectory week to week and the mechanics of playing the position, you see he is making steady progress every week. So if you trust in Ben Johnson, all the evidence says we are on our way to something special. Of course at each level, you have to reach it before anyone can say you've arrived there. But it can also be seen that so far, the progress has been steady, so it's a pretty good bet that Caleb will get there. As for comparisons to Trubisky - I really don't see it. Not if you look at the mechanics, and the growth curve. Not if you look at what's happening, and WHY. The media narrative is shifting on him, soon they'll be overpraising him. Maybe some already are. And maybe that will change some minds, but it shouldn't. You've got a young QB here who has all the tools to be one of the greatest ever. He's obviously not there, but I can't think of another young QB I'd rather ride into the future with. The guy is special. It's hard to miss. It's just not consistent yet. But it's getting better every single week.

for sure unpopular opinions can be true. I've had some here, and they turned out to be true. So have other people. But if anyone thinks Caleb and JF are similar players, that's like arguing that a football is square? Or that we should fire Ben Johnson right now. Its CRAZY.

Agree, BUT we need to get players back from injuries FAST. After Pittsburgh (and beating a team coached by Tomlin is never easy), our schedule is brutal with little wiggle room. This is where having a late bye week would have benefited the Bears.

I can't stand Colin Cowherd, but I'm going to use an analogy he had about Caleb and the Bears. He asked the question, "is it sustainable"? Going with that thought, I determined that it is. Have we scored fluke points? Nope. Did we get cheap turnovers? Nope. Can Caleb keep winning late? Why not? He has the clutch gene. Can we continue to be a top rushing team? Yes. Can Caleb continue to reduce sacks and extend plays? Yes. Can we continue to win TOP? Yup. Anything we see offensively is going to get better. BJ is just recently relying on the rookies to make plays, which frees up the vets. Anything we see on defense is going to get better. From getting half our secondary back to generating a better pass rush. Can you imagine us being in dime with Kyler and CJ in the box? With their ability to make big plays, DA can pick and choose. If we make the playoffs, I don't think the other team wants to see a close game. We're dangerously flawed, but still dangerous.

There is no reason to spend a lot of time trying to convince someone they are wrong in their opinion. They have a right to voice their opinion. Let it be. Move on. There is no reason someone cannot have a different opinion without being called a moron. Just because someone doesn't agree with the majority does not reflect on their intelligence or knowledge of football. They have a difference of opinion and shared it. Just that simple.

I see what everyone else sees and I am not the glass half empty guy on here. He has some great traits but I am disappointed he is not getting the simple passes down yet. Below 60% is not a good look to me. I have never said we should bail on him, or am I a Caleb hater. I asked a question about if he still hasnt progressed a yr from now, what does that do for BJ's confidence in him ? I guess now its okay to be the blind homey. I have been many times accused of being a clueless homer and wearing binders when I look at players on the team. I am not going to pretend he's great until he actual shows more consistency.

Count me as one of those skeptics. Right now, to me, this is Trubisky 2018 (2.0). Even if they don't make the playoffs. For me to totally buy in I'll need to see a sustained and upward trending progress next year...and beyond.

I don't think everyone is sold on him, and that's ok. I just think he is a lot closer to figuring it out than some may think. Not only him, but the entire team has not played a full clean game yet. To be 7-3 and that be the case really makes this a dangerous team going forward.

Bears Receivers have been hit with the drop bug, I believe they have 17 drops now. If half of those were caught, that would bump Caleb's Comp% to 62%, much closer to his 2024 number, but with an ADOT over 0.5 yards farther.

Hell, Caleb is 13th in the league by yards right now. Honestly, everyone on this board sees it except for one person. Im not trying to be mean, but we spend an awful lot of time on this one person's awful takes - myself maybe most of all, to be fair.

As Bears fan, we all should be enjoying this ride. No QB is perfect halfway thru their 2nd season in the league. Williams biggest issue from last year was taking too many sacks, and he has not only improved on that exponentially, he actually has become this magician avoiding sacks. So not only is he not taking unnecessary ones now, he is avoiding almost sure things. It is still Year 1 in a new offense that is new for all players. They changed his stance, they have him playing under center and with play action more than he ever has in his life. Now it is the time to work on ball placement and accuracy. Once he improves there, he will be a top 10 QB until he retires.

Caleb is not a finished product but neither is the rest of the offense. First don’t be swayed by narratives around time to throw. Caleb is not Jared Goff going down in the pocket when the play isn’t there. Extending plays like does is a gift but there should be two distributions for time to throw. One for in the pocket. One for outside. The number of times he uses that gift has gone down but there are no NFL defenders who want to cover for 6 seconds. Likewise the number of throws he makes in anticipation has gone up. There are many moving pieces to this offense with read options on plays. Each game gets a little bit better that’s what matters most. This was a drop by a receiver making $20m

That was ALL he did though, he was on the winning team. Just like Stetson Bennett, Georgia was 29-1 the last two years, and he actually threw for 4K passing yards. The biggest red flag on McCarthy was his inexperience. That reminded me of Trey Lance. There are so few QBs that work out when they have limited college experience. McCarthy can still improve but I don't know if he will even get to a Mac Jones level.

Word. I've honestly been impressed with how well the 'old men' of the group, he and Edmunds, have been playing this year. I think what sets Byard apart is because of his tenure in the league he's had time to learn the flow of the game and play smart. I don't see him trying to lay out people when he goes to tackle them. That's Brisker's downfall (see Mike Brown and Chris Conte). He's pretty aggressive and sometimes pays the price for it. Agreed, because of his age not many teams will come calling...unless maybe he makes another Pro Bowl.

This was my early stat sheet that year before i started watching film. You can see what McCarthy was (very) good at and what the concerns were too. Plus he's younger.
