I could come up with a few more colorful words than "Good grief"...

Swell. The D will not be good enough, and whatever "genius" Marinelli might have had on the DL will be watered down.

Can we let the man do what he wants please?

Do you mean that tongue & cheek? I find this staff tries more often than not to fit square pegs in round holes personally... -

Permalink 9 Comments Back to Top Devin Hester wants to return to returning Posted by Josh Alper on February 4, 2010 1:29 PM ET It's been more than two years since we've seen Devin Hester break a kick return for a touchdown, but if the Bears receiver has his way we could see him get back on the horse in 2010. Hester was a guest on "The Waddle and Silvy Show" on ESPN Radio in Chicago Thursday and told the hosts that while he was happy to do whatever the coaching staff asked of him, he'd like to resume his role as the team's lead kickoff returner. "I know what I'm best at," Hester said. "The return game is my bread and butter, so if I had to cut back on my receiving and go back to returning, that's something I would love to do." Hester had four touchdowns on 63 regular season returns in his first two seasons and added another score on the first play of Super Bowl XLI in 2007. He's returned 38 kicks over the last two seasons, just seven in 2009, as the Bears have tried to harness his abilities to juice up thier offense. Hester had 57 catches for 757 yards and three touchdowns in 2009. If the Bears do choose to limit Hester's role in the offense, it would likely be because of the way Devin Aromashodu played down the stretch last season. The fourth-year player out of Auburn had 22 catches and four touchdowns in the final four games and flashed some good chemistry with Jay Cutler. The fact that the Bears have to learn Mike Martz's expansive offense might also affect how much Hester, a converted cornerback, contributes to the base offense. His speed will always be an asset, but the team might find new ways to utilize it with Martz at the reins. If Hester doesn't return to the returner role, the Bears should still be okay on kickoffs. Rookie receiver Johnny Knox returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown this season and wound up in the Pro Bowl after Percy Harvin passed on an invitation to the game.

Really? He had some nice returns last season. I don't buy he's done returning. Potentially only under this regime who wants him so badly to be a WR. The next regime may see the light better.

Nice write up! Thanks for the insight...

I think so! Here's hoping we can hang our hats on something this coming season! (Even if it's pink slips for the current regime...) -

...and TE. Olsen and Kellen are just fine. But I think if a true #1 WR can be had, we get him.

Smith, Angelo may be at odds over coordinator pick

Oh, I don't mind a little change of pace, etc.. But to have him be the de-facto H-back is scary! -

Man, did I set off the wrong vibe here?!!! I'm probalby more skeptical of this than virtually everyone here. I'm just taking a moment from my usual barrage of anger towards the current regime to ponder the possibility of something positive. I never said I expect it. Far from it... Dang, you say one positive thing and all of a sudden everyone thinks you're a positive person! F that! We're F'ed! We're doomed! This is all a sham! Ahhhh...that feels better... -

And if it were Chrismas all year long I'd want to kill someone for having to listen to holiday tunes all damn year long! Save your pee for "Workplaces Gone Wild" on the Fox Reality Channel please...it belongs nowhere near a fine Scotch and kool-ad. Not sure if you got the gyst of my post. I'm not necessarily on board with the hire. Would you think a guy sitting back enjoying a cigar and a drink is bouncing off the walls with excitement? It's contemplative... I'm just pondering the possibility of something positive. -
I fully understand where you are coming from. But I understand why the team let him go. They had to have a sacrificial lamb. Someone had to take the blame if Smith and Angelo weren't. With that said, I've never thought much of Turner. he did a fine job with Kramer eons ago, but that was then, and the NFL is a different beast. The one thing that gnaws at me is that if he were to stay, it'd be a virtual lock fro the regime to be ousted. Whereas, there's potnetial for Martz to actually do something good, thus resulting in keeping the goons.

Some do at least a better job of masking it...

For the longest time (unfortunately) I've been complaining up a storm over this regime. Realistically, I don't see any reason to stop complaining until actual results happen. However, I'm going to relent a tad and take a swig from Pix's kool-aid jug. Of course, I'm putting a dram of Scotch in it to keep me honest...but I digress. As a kid, I remember a comic book called. "What If?". Its premise was to play out the universe as if something else happened. For instance, an example could be "What if the Fanastic Four had different powers?" The comic would then go about showing how the "universe" would change, etc due to that premise. I recall it being interesting, but I thought Speed Racer was cool until I saw a cartoon of it not too long ago...realizing it was pretty awful. But the premise still stands, and I'm going to play the game... 1. What If: Martz actually does the job. You know, making Cutler Warner-esque. Getting massive points and yards from the O. 2. What If: Tice does his job. You know, the O-line gels like it hinted at at the end of last season. Williams proves worthy of his draft status, etc. In other words these guys to a decent job protecting Jay and making a few holes for the few times Martz had Forte run it. 3. What If: Whatever DC hire is brought on does his job. And I don't mean putting on knee pads and lining up in front of Smith for favors. I mean, being a damn DC. Putting his own take on the Smith 2. Like Rivera did. You'll get some bad, but maybe mostly good. 4. What If: The players play like men. They stop aligator arming. They start pushing people around. They make better decisions. The play smart and tough. 5. What If: Smith makes like Smith and just disappears. Basically, just letting the coordinators run the show. Assuming the coordinators do their jobs as mentioned earlier, Smith could just be a figure-head. Seriously. You could even get a cardboard cut out of him and place it on the sidelines and few would probably notice. It's amazing what Adobe Photoshop can do these days! But really...what if he just gets out of the way? 6. What If: Angelo has just had a bad run and turns it around? What if his drafts were all bowing and katowing to Smith and his whims? It's been speculated that reaches like Bazuin, Okwo and others were all Smith loves that JA gave in on. What if he starts drafting in spite of Smith's desires and actually starts hitting it? If all that happens, maybe this curent situation can work. Odds are it won't. But at least for a few moments, I'm going to sit back with a good cigar, my glass of Kool-Aid w/ Scotch and ponder the possibility. I'm not banking on it. But I'll let this sliver of hope permeate my brain. I need to at least have some Yang w/ my Yin.

Seriously, anything but from within is probably an improvement. The question will be is what percent? Is is 1% better or 100%? This would probably be somewhere in the 25% I think. Small improvement. Then again, if he can just preach getting the DB's to stop being 10 yards off the LOS, it'll make an enormous impact!

Yeah, an H-back needs to be able to block. Olsen is a matador. -
Nope. The Vikings game against New Orleans was far more important for them. They were on cruise control and we finally played with nothing to lose...and almost did lose. A divisional upset isn't as big of an upset as you would believe. Again, you're confusing whiner w/ winner. Winners win games they need to. That was a game we really didn't need to win. It' had no playoff implication. It was a lovely nice win. I cherish any game we beat Favre. But to say that's proof that Cutler is a winner is a bit of a stretch. The question is still out there yet unanswered.
