I’ll say WR and DB. I respect the people who want to upgrade at OT, and I don’t disagree, but I think you are out of your mind if you think a rookie OT is starting for the Bears day one next year. Setting aside the money invested in the present OTs (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.windycitygridiron.com/platform/amp/2020/2/13/21128583/chicago-bears-2020-roster-turnover-nfl-draft-offensive-tackle-charles-leno-bobby-massie-matt-peart), you’re going to have some kind of abbreviated offseason and the Bears will likely want as much cohesion as possible going into the year. Moreover, a lot of the guys you could get in the second round are touted as guys with great athletic potential but raw fundamentals who will need time before stepping into the starting lineup. Maybe Niang if you put him at RT, but my impression is that guys like Jones, Jackson, and Wilson all need quite a bit of work.

I'd rather do it for 50. Grab a guy you love that's still on the board at 43 and then trade down.

A comparable late round guy I’m really loving recently is Antoine Brooks from Maryland. Started at linebacker and moved to safety, but maintained the same mentality and has a whopping 27 TFL in his career, which is unheard of for a safety. I’ve never seen a DB make so many plays at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Sounds like it will be a post-June 1 cut, saving the Bears around $2.8 million this year.

He was reportedly not good even before going on IR. Could be another candidate to move to guard, as I believe lateral movement was a major issue.

This is my favorite and one of the more realistic, IMO. I'd even add our later 6th round pick to get it done. Baltimore moves up 17 spots, but really for us it's like trading down seven spots with our first pick (since we have pick 50) and then ten spots with our second pick (50 to 60). The biggest issue, as some have mentioned, is that I think you increase the risk you miss out on one of the top WRs who might slip out of the first round, but this put you in a really good position to come out of day 2 with a DB (#2 CB or SS), OL, and WR in whatever combination makes sense.

The fact that we are looking for a speed back we might be able to get in the late rounds makes it extra dumb that we lost Kerrith Whyte last year because we decided to put him on the practice squad instead of Ryan Nall . . .

Not interested. You already used a 3rd round pick last year on Montgomery, which you get by trading a 5th last year and a 4th this year. Then you use a 2nd this year, all to dedicate to maybe the most replaceable position on the roster. Like others have said, I'm all for using a later round pick for depth, but I'd like to see what Montgomery can do with actual blocking before we look to replace him.

Been having trouble with the PFF draft simulator, but managed to get it to work and came out with this, which didn't get a very good grade but I'd be pretty happy with.

Like you, I wouldn't mind Cushenberry at #43, but I would take pretty much any of the other safeties, wide receivers, or cornerbacks on the board over Weaver. I really love Higgins personally regardless of how he might fit our actual needs so I would probably take him or Gladney, who might be able to step right in at #2 CB. Winfield would be fine with me as well.

There's also the possibility of a "2 birds, 1 stone" approach where we could look at a safety who can both be a compliment to Jackson at safety, but also has experience at CB and can maybe line up in man coverage with Bush coming in at safety on obvious passing downs. I'm thinking of guys like Winfield (early) or Julian Blackmon (later).

I'd be pretty OK with this, though I've been kind of rethinking my view of CB of late. Namely, if we don't draft one in the 2nd, I'm not sure we need one. What we really need is someone to challenger for the #2 CB spot, which you're probably only going to get with an early pick. From a depth standpoint, we actually look pretty good: we have a nickel starter (Skrine) with a young back up (Shelley), We have several youngish big CBs who have shown some promise who are vying for a starting role (Tolliver, Roberson, Joseph). And we have a young athletic wildcard in Denmark. If we don't go CB early, I think I'd like to see what this group can do.

Are you suggesting Gordon is better than Trubisky? For me, if Foles gets injured and Trubisky falters, I’d much rather go into an off-season knowing you need a QB than having a guy you drafted in the 5th-7th round that you’re not sure can do the job. Absolutely best case scenario you’re the Jaguars this year going into the offseason hoping Minshew is the guy. But history tells us they’d almost never the case. Maybe once in a decade a guy like that really emerges. The most successful QBs taken in the 5th-7th rounds in the last decade are probably Minshew, Tyrod Taylor, AJ McCarron, and Trevor Siemien. Anyone there excite you? Maybe they look OK in the short term, but they are guys you eventually look to replace. Hell, there are years when no QB taken in the last three rounds of the draft ever start a game. If next year’s Bears QBs fail, you fix it with a premier signing or premier draft pick, not pinning the teams hopes on a late round QB.

For the people who want Reagor or Aiyuk, can you explain to me what they give us that we don't have in Anthony Miller? I've heard a lot of people touting both as the "speed" receiver the Bears need, but looking at combine numbers, Aiyuk ran a 4.5, Reagor ran a 4.47, and Miller, who did not run at the combine, was timed at between 4.46 and 4.52 at his pro day. They are all essentially the same size, and Miller had much more polish as a route runner coming out than either Reagor or Aiyuk. I recognize that many receivers find their 40- times magically shaved at their pro day as opposed to the combine, but even so, it seems to me that if you want to argue for a speedier receiver in the 2nd round, Hamler would make more sense than Reagor or Aiyuk. Otherwise I feel like we are just drafting a less polished Miller. I'm personally starting to get in the came that we might be better served taking a big outside receiver like Tee Higgins and put Miller in the slot, unless they think that Ridley or Wims can be that guy. If you still want a pure speed guy, you can take a developmental guy near the end of the draft or look at Antonio Gibson in the middle rounds that you can use in that way.

I think we also need to take into account that it might be harder to complete trades this year because so many war rooms will be spread out, so getting everyone on the same page might take more effort. Personally, I think the ideal situation is to trade down 7-10 spots in the 2nd and pick up a 4th and a 5th. That gives you some flexibility at the end of the second to still land two top-64 players or to trade one of them, ideally to a team like the Pats or Broncos for two of their third round picks. Now you've eliminated the 112 pick gap in picks.

Van Jefferson would also be an option if we traded down and got a mid-round pick. There are also some other safety option if we miss out on Winfield (Jeremy Chinn is Steve Atwater's nephew and JR Reed is Dale Carter's nephew).
