Totally disagree. Different QBs have different levels of accuracy. Caleb's is excellent, as you can see from that drill. The ball is in the identical place each time. That's not common.

I want to say this without being a jerk, but you also thought Fields was a good QB, so maybe you don't have that critical eye for judging QBs? I know you see the drama in the game, and when it's a big play that seems tougher than throwing a ball easily into a small garbage can 30 yard away. But while there are other factors at work in the big play - reading the defense, pocket awareness etc, the throw itself is the same.

You can absolutely judge accuracy and mechanics on warm up throws like that. I've also been watching football a LONG time too, and I can see a difference.

Totally classless.  I support Pix having the right to his opinion.  I support you having the right to yours as well.

because if they play superior offense and defense, but a chaotic play like a kickoff determines the outcome with an effect out of proportion to the rest of the game, then there is more chaos in the outcome and it measures the quality of the teams less.

I always felt the same about surprise onside kickoffs too.

Punts and kickoffs as they were, are fine, they didnt disproportionately affect game outcomes. i wonder (but do NOT know!) whether this new arrangement will end in more kickoff returns for touchdowns than the previous form did, and if it does, then I think it corrupts the game.

Almost by definition there will be significantly more KR and therefore more KR TDs.  It will affect the outcome of games just as Hester did for us.   I like it because I'd rather not see the league beholden to the teams with the best QBs.   Keep it a team sport in all phases.  Poles thought enough of special teams to use a 4th Rd pick on a punter.   I still enjoy watching the kicks and kick returns precisely because of that unknown factor... be it a fumble, muffed punt, big return to flip the field, etc.

sure, but the other (possible) side of the coin is some BS touchdowns that change the outcome of games, where the better team is edged out by a fluke kickoff.

How is a team “better” if they can’t cover kick or even punt returns?

oh for sure, but since it's so new, people are going to find loopholes and techniques that we havent thought of yet. Im not really sure how I feel about it yet. If it feels normal, then OK, but if it turns into some weird new thing, Im gonna think its a bad idea.

Hard to imagine anything worse than watching touchback after touchback.  What is the point of paying millions of dollars for coaches and players and running a non competitive play?

The league minimum for rookies is $795,000 and for players with at least one year experience is $915,000 a year, and $985,000 for two years experience.

So the least the three year contract could be worth is $2.695,000 so we gave him an extra $135,000 - so i guess it's a slight increase, but not much.

We probably had to outbid someone else? But not by much.

ah youre right, the increases over the years make up that $135k. You beat me to it AZ and you got the numbers right.

Last year we were the top rushing defense in the league, tied leading the league in interceptions with 22. Other areas we  were not very strong. When Sweat got here things started to change. The worst pass rush in the league got better. We lost Justin Jones ( a good player) and Eddie Jackson who IMO didnt contribute anything to the defense.

    What's different?

We will have Sweat for the whole year. He upgraded the play of everyone around him.

Kevin Byard is a better player than Jackson. 28 career intceptions in 8 years. A much better tackler than Eddie. They both are the same age and Byard is statiscally better in every area.

Young players make there biggest step in year two. Pickens, Dexter, Stevenson, Smith, Sewell. Also young players Gorden, Brisker, Hicks, and Sanborn are improving.

Resigning JJ was important for stability and leadership.

Austin Booker is the only rookie draftee that could help this year.

Sleepers to watch Jamree Kromah/DE and Kieth Randolph/DT could make the roster.

Walker played better once Sweat got here and hopefully play better. We have a new DC and DL coach in Eric Washington

We  still could add another pass rusher of which could be Yannick Ngokoue who has been rehabing at Halas Hall this offseason. He played below average but maybe one year at Halas Hall will upgrade his play.

Still lots of questions on Defence but the arrow is definitely looking up.

It certainly feels like we're going to add one more decent vet FA.   I'd say most likely on the Dline but can't rule out Williams at Center.

So a lot of people are now using AI for season projections. Here the 33rd Team has all 3 of the Bears top WRs getting over 1K yards. If you add Kmet, Everett, Swift, Herbert, Johnson, and Scott, Williams would have close to 5K passing yards.

Also, as a disclaimer, AI is very accurate, so at least 50% of the time, these predictions will be 100% accurate.

AI is complete and utter BS.   To borrow a phrase from the 1980s.... garbage in garbage out.  Plus on the top of the "data set" they are using or not using you have absolutely no idea how that AI is programmed.  The most common AI systems in use today are simply plain text readers.   Meaning you can interact with the computer via everyday language.  Which is cool but you still have no clue what the underlying program is designed to do.  Drug company using AI to find new cancer drugs... but does it program it to find drugs that maximize profits?  Is the most economical for consumers?  Most efficacious?    Just using a theoretical example people can relate to.

for sure, and for me, against NFL DBs.

I think our defense will do a good job of giving Caleb looks before he gets into NFL games. I remember for many years Bears QBs looking shell shocked when we played other teams, because our defense in practice wasnt very good.

I watched the Kay Adam’s interviews from Halas Hall today.   It’s safe to say it’ll be game on in practice.

Im just scouting his abilities, and what his game looks like. Im not still at the decision to take him, Im interested in his style, and what he does well.

I’m just joking around a little bit although I am at the point where I just want to see him throwing too NFL caliber receivers.   Fortunately we actually have some of them on our roster now.  Smile.

Im just posting this again. Instead of reading articles (although that one above is excellent!) I just watch 5 min of this at a time. Sometimes 20 minutes LOL

It's literally every throw from 2023. The more I watch it the more I think he is even better than I thought he was.

It includes all the bad plays too. But you can watch (some of) it and get a real sense of him as a player. It transcends stats and narratives, and you can just see what kind of QB he is. Spolier alert: he's very very good.

The past doesn’t matter.  Now that it’s done he must be the one.

I think we are lucky we are in the hall of Fame game, we get to start one week earlier than other teams. Which is cool our weapons have already been working out together. The Bears Blitzkrieg is coming early to the NFL.

I agree.   Caleb needs that extra time as does everyone with a brand new offense.  I don't expect we'll see much of anything with the new offensive starters during this game but I'll gladly take that extra week of practice.

  12. Finding a better option at Center is still at the top of my list.  Regardless of all the other talk about pick this guy or that guy, the reality is Caleb appears to be happy to be in Chicago and it wasn't clear to me early on that would be the case.  I can't argue with Odunze either.

I also realize pairing a rookie QB with a rookie C is a really bad idea.  After Fields was cut and it was clear we were all Caleb or nothing pinning my hopes that we'd get one of the top two or three prospects at C was fantasy.   But we could we have at least had a Day 3 prospect in the chute instead of a punter.   This punter better be eye opening good.   Bates needs to be sufficient at C and Waldron needs to be better at play calling than what we've had to endure recently.   Williams needs to play on time for the most part and we should be ok.

IF I had received that PM, I would have responded in a very positive manner immediately.

Thank you for the kind words you said.

BUT, I didn't receive a message from talkbears that a PM from you was waiting for me to view.

I'm sure I didn't, you're sure I did, at least now I know what you are referring to.

To put things into proper perspective, a lot has been going on that has been very distracting to me. Who knows, maybe I'm spacing out. I'm still struggling trying to regain my mobility after fracturing my back last year.

You said this PM was sent in February?

After my daughter passed away last year, I swore I prayed, I never wanted to go through the loss of another child. Unfortunately, God didn't listen (I'm beginning to wonder if there is a God). My son David died of heart failure the last week of this past January. He was only 48.

There was a period when I withdrew from everyone. It wasn't until a memorial service was held for David by his surviving siblings just recently that I began to 'heal.'

Because of my back injury, I had been unable to visit my son for over a year before he died.

That being said, please, any parent reading this, never stop hugging your child and telling them you love them. I don't care if they are 8, 18, or, 48 years old. If they pass away you will regret not having reassured them of your love one last time.

    Pix,

My condolences.  I just lost my mother about 10 days ago so I haven't been online much recently.  I cannot imagine what you have endured.  Your message rings true.  Our families are a gift, Bear Down and make the time for them.

I dont think Williams is just an arm. Daniels, for example, has a better arm and is mobile as well. Fields has a huge arm too.

Caleb is a playmaker. He reads defenses extremely well, and can get the ball out fast. He is more NFL ready than either Daniels or Fields.

Williams is not just a physical specimen, he is an actual quarterback.

It's not his arm that's generational, it's the way he plays the position and the completeness of his skill set.

I didn’t say he’s just an arm.  I said it’s his arm talent that is generational.  Other traits as you said were not even best in class.   Of the top 6 QBs if you ranked them in each category I’m confident Caleb is top 2 or 3 in each except fumbles.  He might be last there and if I wasn’t using my phone I’d look it up.  Overall those traits made him the best prospect but he’ll need time to fix those bad habits.

He gets one big advantage because our offense is all new with many new skill position players.  Nobody knows what to expect in the first few games.

Injuries are the only thing in the way of a winning record. Something people keep forgetting is a generational QB lifts the players around him. Even as a rookie ( will make mistakes) you will see him give the OL a boost and help make the weapons better if that is possible.

Caleb is a QB with generational arm talent.  That's it, although he has other positive traits.  He has a ton of learning to do.  Ball security is horrible with 30 fumbles in college.  Deep passing is inaccurate but should improve IF he can improve his footwork in the pocket.   He needs a lot of work to get rid of the happy feet.   He is a rare arm talent that can get away with that on shorter throws simply because he can throw off-angle but IMO when you start getting beyond 20yds it really affects his accuracy.  A bunch of his "big play" highlights showed open receivers having to make big adjustments to the ball, adjustments that usually brought the coverage back into the play.

Over-selling him for what he is at this point won't change any of the bad habits.  IMO he's got the work ethic but he needs to hear the criticism to drive him to improve.  I hope our coaches are already in his ear doing just that.  To start with, this year he needs to do what he too often refused to do at USC.... take the easy read and let his teammates do the work.   There will be times when plays break down and then he can go do his thing.  I just hope the plays aren't breaking down because he is still bypassing the open early-read while looking for the big gain.

Bottom line for me is that this year his teammates need to lift his play.  He has the players around him to do that if he just lets them do their job.

We should pick up Connor Williams on a deal with a 3 year contract as our option next year. Let him heal and see where he is in October.

I'm 100% on board with this and it's possible Poles had an agreement with him to re-visit talks when he was healthier.  (i.e.don't go anywhere without talking to us).    There's no doubt Williams would prefer a longer term deal and most teams likely wanted to give him a 1yr deal or at least less guaranteed money.   Maybe this is why he bypassed the center position in the draft.  He kept enough cap space to make a deal like this.

These seem like the most likely guys to make the 53-man roster:

Brenden Bates, TE (still need a TE3)

Keith Randolph, DT (still need another DT)

Jamree Kromah, DE (could replace Robinson who has been ineffective so far)

Theo Benedet, OL (would be a back end replacement for someone like Borom ($3.1M cap savings))

Gosh, I sure hope our 3rd pick can be out a UDFA for the swing OT job.
