Sure, but hes got that gig already wrapped up, so the only change that could happen, no matter how unlikely, is that he'd lose that job. So he's playing it safe, and flexing at the same time.

i think most players would just go along with things and not make waves, but there is a logical reason for Caleb not to do it, just as he will pay a price in the press and public opinion for this decision too.

When Payton was signed by the Bears he said "I'm going to make you forget all about Gale Sayers", 6th round draft Pick Tom Brady found Robgert Kraft on the field the first day and told him "I'm going to be the best draft pick you ever took" - sometimes real leaders are abrasive and arrogant and single-minded in the pursuit of greatness.

Caleb has described his NFL goals saying "I want to be immortal" - the kind of GOAT greatness historical fame that everyone remembers. Im not mad at that. I dont need "golly gee Im just here to work and improve one day at a time" - I love the fire and confidence. But of course if he doesnt back it up he will be a bum, but if he does, he may drag the entire organization across the finish line, even as they may resist what it takes to win.

He might be the kind of guy to call his own more aggressive play in the huddle and ignore the actual play call, and if hes right and hits it, then he's a hero.

Jim Mcmahon famously threw that bomb of a pass to Willie Gault against the Vikings on MNF, coming off the bench to light the fuse on the 85 Bears. The play call was a screen to Payton. Gault's route was a clearout and he was not a viable receiver on the play. Was Mcmahon wrong to break the mold and reach for greatness? When he wore the headband with the Commissioners name on it mocking him, that wasnt humble. It wasnt being a good team player. It was an arrogant SOB taking his destiny.

Let's not be afraid of greatness and praise humility as the only path. I'd rather win superbowls than sing kumbaya.

I don't see how his medicals "lose" him a job if he gives them to every team since he's already said he's giving them to only the teams he's interested in?   How does a team with no interest in drafting him sway the medical opinions of those who are interested?

You can try to sell me on his arrogance, which is your assessment not mine, and ignoring coaching being a positive trait but it's my own personal dislike of working with people like that which, for this old man, isn't going to change.  Regardless of your McMahon example, elite arm talent and arrogance didn't work well for Jay Cutler.  Cockiness I'm ok with as I view that as a different trait of competitiveness versus the arrogance of putting one self above others.

There are multiple reports suggesting 1 NFL source stated Caleb Williams is the first attending player to decline having his medical report shared with teams. Don’t know if the source was stating a fact or an opinion.

I have no issue with this because:

    1) The report would include confidential information.

    2) Whatever is in the report would only need to be shared with a few teams.

Caleb is likely going to be available to be selected by up to 5 teams and likely only 1,i.e., the Bears. Would anyone on this board want their personal information shared with an organisation they’re unlikely to work for, I wouldn’t.

So for me there is no red flag. When Caleb meets with the Bears or any team that can pick him, he has told them they can do whatever test is needed.

This situation will happen in the future because prospects are starting to question some of the previous norms and have greater power, which I don’t think is a bad thing.

For a chance to have a $7mil/yr job I'll give my medicals to every team.

i'm not so sure. with all the qb's going in the top ten this is pushing down other first class draft picks down like DE or even LOT.

if you get a chance to draft a blue chip player at one of those two positions you HAVE to take it. it could be years before we are drafting in the top 10 again and those premium players are the top of the list (other than qb) for building your franchise long term. you can pick up good+ receivers in future drafts in the middle of the first or even in free agency. you will rarely find premium LOT's or DE's in those slots.

also we have seen what difference a good+ defensive end can do for our defense and overall chances to get to a superbowl. that means if sweat was injured there is nobody to fill in his shoes and it's very doubtful we would find that kind of player from a team like washington again. you would way overpay to replace him in free agency or a trade.

the same could be said of LOT. if there is a premium blue chipper to replace our LOT that gives you a lot of trading power to other teams.

if either of those type of players are there at 9 and they rate out that high i take them without any doubt.

Agreed on the roster building at premium positions.  You can find good WRs in Rd 1 to Rd 2 in most drafts.

I like Verse a little more than Turner, but like both. Chop’s lack of production scares me, as do Latu’s medical history. Adisa Isaac is a guy I like in the 2/3 range, but edge seems to drop off quite a bit after the 1st, imo.

I like Turner a little more than Verse because of his elite quickness and bend.  He reminds me a lot of Von Miller and his speed to chase down plays from the backside is outstanding.  Verse is outstanding in his own right but is more of a power rusher.  So it might depend on what the team wants.   Both are really good against the run but Verse with his power is going to hold up better setting the edge.  I saw Kollman's breakdown of Verse last night and he said something that was interesting:  If you want to run a defense with 2-high safeties, which he said is done 50% of the time in the league, then you need a stout edge who can force run plays back inside.   I like Latu a lot as well, he's very technical with his hands and strong.   Draft any of these top 3 and we're a much better defense.   After them it is slim pickings in this draft.

I don't see Chop having the length needed for our scheme as a run defender.  He will likely fit in as an OLB in a 3-5 front.

As far as draft day strategy it all depends on how the top 8 go but I still prefer to get the DE over the WR (assuming MHJ and Nabors are gone).   We can find a very good WR with a 2nd Rd grade in the 3rd Rd.   A WR3, with potential to become a WR2 in the future, is all we need right now to complete the starting group.  We could use 4th WR to build depth but with no trade down off #1 those wishlist items are becoming just that....wishes.

No clue who this guy is and what his credentials are.   By the way if a QB is really smart about knowing his defense sucks he does all he can to make long drives and win time of possession and keep the D off the field.  Hero ball hoping for big plays and quick scores is not ideal.

Sorry, I don't see it. Cringey? Really?

Having a fiery coach on the sidelines or giving post-game interviews is entertaining. Ditka was fun, but actually not a very good HC. We should have won more than one SB with that roster. No excuse for a one-and-done.

That said, mild-mannered HCs have been very successful. As much as I detest the Cowboys, Landry was a master.

Flus kept the team together and motivated during a very difficult rebuild when the roster was stripped down to its foundation and rebuilt over the past two years. It's still a work in progress. The players bought into his HITS system, they bonded as a team, and it takes a true leader, a HC who has the respect of the team, to accomplish that.

And yes, it's his first HC gig. He has made mistakes, but it seems like his on-the-job training is progressing at a remarkable rate. The finish of last year's slate of games was quite exciting. I saw growth. I felt hope for the future.

So you don't like the guy. Fine. But I am happy they kept a promising 1st timer instead of risking hiring a new HC like Wannstedt, Jauron, Fox, Trestman, or Nagy. Hell, compared to some of our recent HCs, Flus is amazing LOL

My point was about some of his mannerisms during press conferences.   Has nothing to do with coaching acumen.

I look at it like we told the whole world we are drafting a QB, which makes the pick more valuable.  Suitors know that they are really going to have to pony up if they want Caleb.  And when we really look at it, how much better is he really?  If he's in a league of his own, the point is moot, cause you didn't trade that.  If Poles sees it at close and someone calls strongly, we make bank on picks.

This is how I see it too.  Poles wasn't getting the trade value he wanted for Fields and might have been ok keeping him as insurance poilcy (i.e. massive offer from Raiders).  I think his biggest issue is the fact he fleeced the Panthers last year and no team wants to be embarrassed like that this year.  Certainly not well ahead of the draft.   So nobody was coming to table with the offer he wanted.

Then at some point Poles just decided that hanging onto Justin was hindering his negotiation leverage so he had to jettison him.  Poles may have been content with the delay and loss in value trading Justin as it allowed him time to perform some due diligence on the QB prospects.  That late decision (as opposed to doing this around the combine time before FA), along with giving up a valuable 4th Rd pick makes me think he wants the trade down with Washington.

Or he is just completely happy with drafting Williams.  I can't see any scenario at this time where he'd trade to #3.  On draft day if he wants Daniels and NE wants Maye, or vice versa, then they can hit the dance floor.  The only move ahead of the draft is to #2 and that's if Wash commits to who they are drafting.  That might be a possibility but I think we wait until draft day and we're on the clock.  Or we even draft Williams and keep him, or draft and then trade him.

The Bears are still weak at WR3, Edge2, and need at least another rotational piece at DT with the loss of Jones. For upgrades, Center is the most obvious spot not listed. So priority seems to be WR/Edge, then DT, then Center.

If they stand pat, they have #9, #75, and #122 to address those spots. They have talked about a big drop off in talent in this draft (due to players staying in school due to NIL), so there are fewer mid level players available. I assume that is why Poles has not been shy to dump draft picks later in the draft.

What would you rather see the Bears do (not what you think they will do) with the draft picks? Do you think it is better to get a no-brainer blue chipper at #9 OR trade back to #17 and pick up something around #48 (using JAX as an example). Would #17 and #48 be better than #9?

I think if Nabers, Odunze, Alt, or the top Edge is there at #9, I think you have to take them. If that group is gone, you definitely move back. I think Alt is the wild card. How do the Bears really feel about Braxton Jones?

Also, if you do move back to #17, and JPJ is there at Center, is he the pick? Would you pick him over Edge? Then try to address Edge at #48 or #75?

Blue chip players are what wins Superbowls so you always take one, or two, when you can, and especially at the premium positions.  The rest you have to backfill one way (FA) or another (draft next year).

Yeah Flus is cringey. I still dont know exactly why they kept him, but I do feel like the staff around him is top notch.

Once they all go into battle together, that should help cohere them into a family.

I think Flus is an easy tell just like when he was asked about Getsy late in the season.  It seemed clear to me that Getsy was getting fired if Flus was staying.    I get the part about Flus being cringy at times.  I think he's the type of person that would rather just tell you what he's really thinking and doesn't know how to mask that.  Then the nice things he says just come out awkwardly.  Poles I'm never sure how to read him other than the fact he always looks like he has a plan and refuses to tell you anything about it.

Yes, I must admit I'm not 100% Caleb. Something tells me there is a hidden gem in this quarterback class. Yes, Caleb has awesome talents, but his shit stinks just like the others. If we draft Caleb, can we give him the support needed with such little draft capital? OR, would it be better to draft a player whose ceiling might be less lofty (at #2?), but because we got a huge haul of picks in the trade down from 1 to 2 (as an example), we would be able to solidify the OL with a top OC, add a WR to field with DJ & KA, a top Edge and a 3T (all within the first 3 rds) and still have an additional 2025 1st let over for next year.

I have softened some on Maye, like Daniels, but now I am beginning to look more at the kid from Michigan. For some weird reason, I am getting a bit concerned about putting a rookie quarterback on the field without a fully loaded lineup. We've seen how that works time and time again. And don't doubt it for one minute: despite many of us advocating sitting a rookie quarterback for the start of the season, teams nowadays seem to rush their rookie quarterback onto the field.

Yes, Mahomes sat. Rodgers sat. Love sat (jury still out on him!) But will the Bears sit aq rookie QB or throw him into action day one?

If we are going to drop the kid into action right away, I want him to have a fully loaded squad, offense and defense, from day one.

I don't think we have resources to fill all the gaps.  If we are to prioritize for the rookie QB that means the defense has to suffer without a 2nd decent DE, and we have to rely upon Pickens/Dexter to improve as a 3-tech.  Or does an elite defense give the rookie his best chance to win games versus relying on a rookie WR?

there are lots of things to have opinions about. That Justin had a problem pulling the trigger isnt an opinion. It's a well chronicled fact.

I am happy to admit that most things on here are opinion. Just because I have one doesnt mean I think it's the only one, or that everyone must agree - that's some kind of projection on me, but it isnt what i think.

But at the same time, Im not going to live in a post modern context where nothing is real and anything can be true. That's BS. Justin has a problem playing in structure. Every pundit says it. His college scouting says it. The fact that we traded him, and what his worth was to us and the rest of the league says it. It is an incontrovertible fact.

And so, pretending that there is some character flaw in me because I declare a fact a fact, is nonsense, and gratuitous. It is just is.

When I say Jayden Daniels doesnt make reads or turn his head after the snap thats a claim Im making that can be proven right or wrong. There is no subjective nature to whether someone turned their head or not - they either did or they didnt, and you can count how many times each happens and get a sense of the pattern. Thats not an opinion.

    These ARE opinions:

Daniels will grow and overcome this tendency and be amazing in the NFL
Daniels is going to lead a team to a superbowl
Daniels is going to score more points than any QB ever did

I cant say anyone saying those things are wrong. Those are unknowns. I can have contrary opinions, but they would just be opinions.

But if I say Justin wore the number 1 on his jersey, thats not an opinion. And neither is what Im saying about Fields or Daniels ability to go through progressions. They are easily seen on tape over and over.

Taking shots at me personally (when that happens) is not a substitute for doing ones own homework. Maybe youll tell me "youre wrong I watched a game where Daniels made tons of second reads" and that would be a substantive claim, so I'd say "cool what game was it" and then on your recommendation, Id actually go watch the game to evaluate your claim. I wouldnt say "well youre not Kurt Warner so what do you know?" Id just be glad for the claim to go learn. And then if I saw it too Id say "well thats amazing, youre right in this game he did it - so I guess he has that capability" and then Id go look at even more games to see how common it was. Maybe the games Ive seen were a poor sample. Im totally open to that.

I mean, I change my mind all the time. I wasnt sold on Caleb a couple months ago. Then i watched several hours of all 22 film, and that changed my mind. I have no reason to not like Jayden Daniels. He throws a beautiful ball. But I watched the tape and saw what I saw.

So Id please ask people to stop rebutting my tape based claims with personal responses like "youre not Kurt Warner" or whatever. Or Ill just start responding it kind, and it can be like a kindergarden in here. "no YOURE a poop" "no YOU are" - it's not an argument that expands anyones understanding of anything.

I also would like if anyone who said I was a Justin hater because there is something wrong with ME, that I am angry, or mean etc to admit that what I said about him turned out to be true, that Poles and the NFL agreed with me, so since I wasnt wrong, it wasnt coming from some bad character, and simply that I saw something in the tape.

But I wont hold my breath.

Sorry had some family in town from Spain so I've been mostly offline the last few days.  You have a good perspective on many things.  I think you can be confident that everyone wants to read that.  I just enjoy the debate, or reading the debates, even when we disagree.

  12. Can we get no clue as an option?  At this point in time I have no idea who I think is the best QB in this draft for a variety of reasons.  Reasons  that are different on each of the top 3.  I've got 5 wks to figure it out so I can be disappointed on draft day.

  13. This is a big red flag for me regarding MHJ.  I'll just never understand an athlete not wanting to compete.  Bowl games and injuries I can understand moreso but we're just talking about running and jumping.   Apparently there are rumors that several teams have Nabors as WR1 in this draft.  Some of that can be need on individual teams too.  None of that matters now since there is almost no way either Nabors or MHJ will be on the board when we draft at 9.  In any case I still think the value play is DE at 9.  This WR draft is so deep you can get a WR in Rd 3 who has 2nd Rd grade.

It's hard to say. I'm still a big fan of his talent, but there is something about him that I cant put my finger on.

I heard one sportswriter say that maybe he's trying to thread the needle of being pro Bear, but not disrespectful to another team that might trade up for him. That seems far fetched.

That Allen came out to see him might indicate that he's coming to Chicago.
Poles doesnt know him yet, so I guess it's more respectful. He DID squeeze, but the look aways were fast. Did he just ignore Eberflus?

Then again he slipped on ESPN and said "and Keenen is HERE for a 4th rounder" meaning Chicago...

I dunno, there are so many tea leaves to overreact to.

Anyway, while I'd still take him at #1, I know what you mean AZ54. Something is weird. I feel it too.

P.S. Im not predicting this, but I have been talking about a scenario for a while now where if Caleb didnt want to come to Chicago, and he told Poles that privately, would Poles want to announce it? Doesnt it make Chicago look bad and powerless? So mightn't both participate in a charade that we traded down for the haul? So no one judges Caleb, and the Bears dont get publicly dissed?

It's a far fetched theory. But if we dont take him, Im always gonna wonder.

I wouldn't leave that out of the realm of possibility.

  15. Does anyone know a body language expert?   Those hugs from Poles and especially with Eberflus seemed to me highly indifferent.  I'm a little odd in that I look for things like smiles and eye contact, even if brief, to tell if someone is being genuine.  I see Poles looking away and maybe just being "professional".  Eberflus OTOH didn't look happy at all, more mechanical in his motions.  Usually after that I'd expect very brief "something" of an interaction yet Caleb moved on quickly and so did the Bears.

Maybe to Phx's point they are just going through a formality with the hugs and not trying to show any cards.  I also suspect Phx can vouch there are people in business that can smile and look you in the eye while stabbing you in the back.   Probably we've all worked with someone like that one time or another.  So maybe this is nothing but people getting ready to go their separate ways.

Then later in his interview with Colin Cowherd you still do not see any smile from Williams during any discussion of Chicago.  At the 1min mark Cowherd says hey Chicago has some dudes what's it going to be like working with Keenan Allen.  Williams first part of the response is IMO somewhat scripted (blessed to be #1 overall pick) but there's no smile when talking about Keenan until he begins discussing their friendship going back for years.  At that time I feel like we're seeing the real Caleb.   Then go to the 5min mark when Cowherd asks him again about going to Chicago where the fans "care".   While he still asking the question Caleb rolls his eyes, then has to bite his lip twice before answering what his vision of playing in Chicago will be like.  Again no smiles no immediate reaction just thought out words like he's reading a script.

Regardless of the talent assessment it is still my opinion this guy does not want to play in Chicago... at this point in time.  I'm not sure we want him either.

I will give you credit for making some points about Caleb that Chase actually shows breaking down tape instead of just saying it. Maybe you can do that type of stuff to backup your opinions. It's easy to see it and has sold me more on Caleb than all information before this.

I haven't seen anyone refute that Williams has elite pocket awareness.  Everything I've seen on numerous breakdowns is just wow, almost 6th sense of what is going on around him.  I think he also has elite arm talent with some incredible off-platform throws.  However, I also think, as with many elite athletes, that talent gets him into trouble where he gets lax with his mechanics and just reaches around pressure with an off-angle throw.  That leads to him missing relatively easy throws at times.

It's correctable with some work and he's got the foot quickness to reset.  As Kurt Warner said today each of the top QBs needs work on their game if they are going to be an NFL starter.  Which makes this a really tough decision.

I don't know why Penix doesn't get more love. He looks good passing the ball.

In part is his big time injury history, but for me the other challenge with him is that he is mostly a line-of-site passer.   That works great in many situations, and he's got a nice strong arm, but in games I watched he seemed to struggle when he has to drop the ball in over a defender.

  18. 1 minute ago, BearFan PHX said:

    exactly. it aint hard.

But his description of Justin Fields is at odds with what the tape shows. When a guy is looking right at an open receiver, and that open receiver is hitting his break before any others, and Justin's hips are pointed toward that receiver, and his arm is up to throw - it isn't hard to know that was his first read. And when you can see the guy is open but Justin doesnt throw the ball, it doesnt take a genius at all to know that Fields is hesitating and not pulling the trigger. When you see it over and over, then you know it's a flaw in his game.

And then you read a ton of people writing the same thing, and then you go back to college scouts saying the same thing. It's kind of hard to say "well you dont know what his progression was so you dont know" so i responded symmetrically, that he doesnt know how to break down tape. Im not suggesting it's hard to do or Im the only one who can do it either.

But yeah, there is a reason that no one wanted Fields as a starter. that's not because of me, I'm just some guy noticing it, and if he thinks it's not true, then he is just a guy who isn't noticing it.

We all have the same facts in the world, yet the world is composed of billions of different opinions.  His is just one and he's welcome to it.  This is actually why I read this board because people will force me to see things from a different perspective.  Some change my mind, others do not.  I'm not married to the need for someone to see things my way, I simply accept the differences and see how things play out.  So sometimes they are wrong and sometimes I'm wrong, and maybe more often than not I'm wrong.  Despite all that, it is still possible to support an argument without declaring a "flaw" in someone else just because you disagree.

I don’t run their computers decisions.

  21. Maybe this is the guy we want?   Not the biggest arm but he's the most versatile when you add in his running ability.  He's already reading defenses well in SEC (make Jason proud!).   When I consider the ability to deal with adversity, ability to be team first he has it as you'll see in his interview.

    Drake Maye:

-Threw nearly twice as many interceptions as Caleb this year.

-Lead a team that arguably fell apart even more than USC, losing four of their last six games. Only one of their opponents was ranked at the time (NC State was #22). Meanwhile, USC lost five of their last six that Caleb started, including against #21 Notre Dame, #14 Utah, #5 Washington, and #6 Oregon.

-Skipped out on his bowl game (like Caleb).

-Skipped out of combine workouts (like Caleb).

Besides your interpretation of why Caleb's top 30 visit was moved and his father (which Caleb has no control over and it bears noting that Kliff Kingsbury said he saw Caleb's father maybe once while at USC), what makes Caleb a princess but not Drake? Is it really just the nails thing?

I don't recall saying anything about Caleb's top 30 visit, I don't even know if that's happened yet or not.   I don't even know if it was setup with Chicago or was that just an internet rumor spread by someone to make him look bad in Chicago?

Painted fingernails, which isn't a big deal IMO because I have a grandson who paints his fingernails, but the need to make that "something" on the internet before a big game is more bothersome for me.  I don't have an issue getting in my grandson's face when he's focused on Tik Tok and "likes" so I don't have an issue saying the same about Caleb.   Attention seeking and the celebrity stuff when you haven't really done anything is a concern for me.  In this modern world that stuff is going to find you anyway, especially in the NFL, but what is it you're working for?   Then when things go wrong, and they will, how do you handle that publicity in a big city?  His interview at the combine didn't impress me at all.  Others thought he was great, I think he's being evasive when he says "it doesn't matter how I feel".   He skipped medicals at the combine because.... he's more "special" than everyone else?   Does he really want to just be one of the guys on the team?   One of the guys on the field during their testing?

I don't know how Caleb has no control over his father, that's interesting.  If my father went public saying stuff about me and what I want and I didn't like it I'd be telling him, and the public he doesn't speak for me. He has no agent so who do you think he's working with?   If he has no agent who has been doing the negotiating for him on his TV commercials?  If he's choosing to do all that by himself well then my question is  how much focus is he putting on learning the game?

I don't like the fact Maye skipped the combine either.  If you want to be the first pick go compete!   I don't like some of the inaccurate throws he makes within games and I don't like that sometimes he doesn't seem to "see the field".  He also sometimes wanders in the pocket closer to pressure.  I wasn't hot on either of these guys because I don't see an Andrew Luck type worth #1 overall but now I'm stuck and gotta pick one.  The only thing I know is that out of almost every draft there is one long term starter.  I have no clue which one that will be.

Interceptions:  What I've seen on numerous breakdowns of Caleb is that he tends to stay away from the compressed reads where the defense is in tight.  That's not necessarily a bad thing except at the same time he often ignores easy wide open underneath routes.  You can pick any of his highlight throws from scrambles and more often than not find an easy target open underneath early in the progression.  What I see on film is that if he can't make the read he wants he'll just scramble and try to make something on his own.  He's really good at that in college but he's not that fast at the NFL level so again we have to project how he'll adjust to being forced to stay in the pocket.   There are some times on film where he's composed in the pocket and goes through his progressions.  That's the same with Maye.

You can see in the video I posted that Maye is making those tight seam throws.  He's not always perfectly accurate but he's making those reads.  Doing it with reps you will learn how to get better.

Really both of these guys have several bad habits to break but both have starting NFL QB talent.  We have to figure out who is going to work harder to close the gap.  If we choose Caleb I'll be hopeful he's got the work ethic to do that and I certainly hope he proves me wrong.   If I had my way I wouldn't want to see any of these QBs starting in Wk 1.  They aren't ready.

(FWIW I purposely picked a scouting report that highlighted all those negatives on Maye).
