I don't want to give Glennon stupid money either but if it comes with almost no guaranteed money that we can walk away from in a year then I'm ok with it. Almost all QBs get stupid money anyway so I just have to put blinders on when I see the bill. I'd pay more for that flexibility. If he is performing well then we certainly will keep him around so he has incentives as well.

I think for once Pace pays big to acquire the best available option and we pay $13-14mil/yr to Gilmore. This gives him more flexibility to do what is needed to fix the other glaring hole on the roster: QB.

It appears Hoyer is going to try to do the same thing that Fitzpatrick did with the Jets last year and try to earn $10mil+. If Glennon can get more than 10mil I can't blame him for trying. I would rather suffer with another alternative and just let him go. Since Hoyer played for Shanahan in Cleveland they are likely the only real competition for him as far as starting opportunities. In that case he's joining a team at the start of a complete overhaul, whereas we are a bit further along. What we don't know is if the 49ers are going to try to trade for Cousins. If they think they might pay Cousins $20mil+ then there won't be room to pay Hoyer big money, although they might just for a one year deal. I think we'll offer Hoyer 2 years and we're still his best option. We'll see how long he holds off on signing.

That's nice, can he jump out of a pool too? Here is his "best" game and, IIRC, he too said this was his best game. Watch all the passes beyond 20 yards. To save you time you can just watch the first 2:50 because things don't change much over the length of the game. This is against a defense that likely was the closest to what he'll see in the NFL. I see too high, too long, too short even though WR/TE adjust by almost stopping to make the catch, and a couple that are where they should be. Not a high in-stride success rate beyond 20 yards. http://draftbreakdown.com/video/nathan-pet...clemson-2016-2/ If there is a Kirk Cousins in this draft it is Peterman. I have no issues drafting him in the 4th Rd versus paying Glennon $12-14mil.

Letting Cutler go is supposed to free up some cap space that we can use to strengthen the rest of the roster. If we end up signing Glennon to a contract similar in value (i.e. $12mil) to Cutler's then we lose. Hoyer will sign, this is his best chance period to show he can be a starter in this league because he knows the offense and he has an outstanding RB.

I still think we take Trubisky at #3 if he's there but it's 60/40 with a strong possibility we draft a defensive player. We have to let this play out because there are two months left for analysis and visits with these QBs. FWIW the reason I like him over the others is that he has shown he can move through his read progressions and two, he can throw accurately on the run moving both to the left and right, which is rare, and that means when plays break down you've still got a chance. Kizer didn't perform well at the combine. I heard David Carr say his step forward is inconsistent and that is why he is often high or low on his passes. That is something he can improve upon with practice but could he drop all the way to Rd 2 if Mahommes goes in the 1st Rd? Peterman looks good on passes under 15 yards. Webb showed some of the same inconsistency in his passes that you see in games.

There are clear guidelines against releasing any information from the Scouting Combine medical checks. It is highly unlikely the NFL Network would break the NFL's rules and report the arthritis finding.

Just ran the replay of WRs/QBs and on Switzer and you are correct. He was fast and quick with very good hands in the drills. Gauntlet drill was easy for him. Deep out with pass coming over the shoulder, drop in the bucket into both hands no bobble and away from the body. He's a slot WR but he's good enough to produce at all levels of the field.
-
His injury issues and surgery occurred at bad time but I absolutely love Malik Hooker's response as to why he played through those injuries in the playoffs. http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/vid...d8-278ea54c75f3

Myles Garrett put on a big show today. 41" vertical, 4.64 forty at his size is incredible, plus his movement skills in the position drills.
-
After seeing him move around in space I prefer Solomon Thomas over Allen. He can handle OLB and then be our 4-3 DE with some occasional 3-tech snaps inside.
-
Day 1: Stephone Gilmore CB. He can match up 1on1 with enough speed to not have to rely on FS help. He didn't play that well last year which might keep his price down but he's been very good in earlier seasons.

I didn't get to see Trubisky throw much but of the top 4 QBs Watson looked the best IMO. Very comfortable in the drop back and on target. There is something to this guy when the lights are on he's ready and we can't discount that. Based on what little I saw of him, I like the way Trubisky threw as well. It's all recorded and I'll go back and catch all the drills on my days off. Kizer showed some of the same (occasional) short throws we've seen in games. After two months of practice for these drills that bothers me. Mahomes was all over the place and just looked uncomfortable at times. Again I haven't seen all the drills yet so we'll see if he settled in later.

Given our lack of QB talent and the excellent RB talent in this draft we definitely should draft a RB on day 3. I love Howard and he's our starter hands down but this is the NFL and it's a brutal battle each week for RBs. Langford did not show enough progress last year and Carey is not good enough to be a #2 RB, and not versatile enough to be a #3 RB. Our team will rely heavily on the run game next season and Howard needs someone who can share the load with him. The last thing I want is that we run Howard into the ground before this team is ready to compete deep into the playoffs in 2 or 3 years.

What do you see in Peterman to make you think he's an NFL starter? I see a weak arm that has to release the ball very early on intermediate or deeper routes. He's accurate on his throws but beyond the short routes he's going to struggle with the speed in the NFL just like Hoyer does. Fast players are going to be bating him into throws beyond 10 yards and he'll either learn quickly that he can't make those throws without getting at least an incomplete pass if not an INT, or he'll leave the NFL. IMO his smarts and ability to make the quick read keep him around as a career backup. We already have one of those on our roster in Shaw (I think he showed enough to be a backp) plus Barkley (whatever he may be). Likely soon we'll have another career backup in Hoyer. You only need so many of these so at some point we should take a chance on a QB with more potential.
-
Neither side had any reason to part ways. Knowing the offense and the lack of QB competition makes this by far Shaw's best chance to show he can be an NFL QB.
-
I love how Budda Baker plays the game but at his size I'm not comfortable taking him in the 2nd Rd. I think he's going to have durability issues.
-
Well then he won't grade out so high and it settles it naturally. That's why it's good the draft process is so long. It puts these players in a brighter spotlight for a long time.
-
Yes. I'm not talking vet minimum but $4-6mil he might take for a shot at the playoffs. He's had a star-crossed career and made a lot of money. There is one thing that would validate his talent and that's at least going deep into the playoffs if not to the Superbowl.
-
I wouldn't totally rule that out after their experience with QBs last year. Regardless, they needed cap space so don't read too much into it.
-
You are far more optimistic about Trevathan and his long term prospects than I am. I definitely think he'll return but will he have the same speed? In any case this year he's likely a PUP candidate. Again, this is not what I want to do but if Foster graded that much higher than the others it is what we should do. I just don't believe he grades out higher than players like Thomas, Hooker, and Adams in which case we fill the need. Pass rusher opposite Floyd is a need IMO.
-
NY Giants. Pair him up with the other whiner and enjoy. If he's willing to be on a low priced contract this would be a good 1yr let's-try-to-win-it-all chance for everyone involved. They have the defense, the QB, but need another decent WR to go with Beckam. A bigger WR option for red zone fits the need well. We all know Brandon can keep it clean for one season if he's highly motivated. Meanwhile Brandon keeps his current TV gig which makes him happy.
-
Allen is definitely off the radar now at #3. The arthritis might not affect him too much now but it's an issue when you look at a second contract and if you know up front you can't get that value out of a #3 pick then you shouldn't go there. I wouldn't have a problem with Foster. I'm still good with Trubisky but prefer to go defense with Thomas followed by Adams/Hooker. Hooker is a guy who has to come visit right before the draft to follow up on his progress from the surgery. All four of these defensive players make an impact this year.

I voted to build for the future vision. However, that and winning now don't have to be mutually exclusive. Given the cap space and strength of this draft it is quite possible to build a very good to dominate defense. We know from history that can take you a long way. More teams win the Superbowl with a dominant defense than a dominant offense. Sign Calais Campbell, draft Solomon Thomas. Dline is done. ($13mil?) Hankins as a backup signing ($8mil) Double dip on FA CBs (Gilmore, Logan Ryan) then find a safety in Rd 3. ($18-20mil) Maybe we can find a 3rd tier FA ILB to help ILB depth until Trevathan is ready to go. ($1-2mil) Sign FA WR Woods (2nd tier) and draft a WR in Rd 2 and we'll have some depth. ($6-8mil) Sign FB Juszczyk and use 4th Rd pick to draft a RB. ($4mil) Yes, we will have a successful running game no matter what. 4th Rd draft Kelly or Peterman. QB to groom 5th Rd TE might still be a good backup prospect especially one who is more of a blocker ....which we need to run the ball! 6th Rd trade Kyle Fuller for this pick and take BPA Give Hoyer some ridiculous money to stay ($5-7mil) We have cap space right now of $51mil. I spent $54mil. Cutting Cutler frees up $12mil, cut Houston/Royal and it's $10mil more for total space of $73mil. Cut Sutton/McManis add $3mil for $76mil total. If we find a good OT who can backup/challenge to start cut Houston/Royal and sign him for $6-8mil. Now we've spent $62mil. We have $14mil for rookie pool, a couple FAs to fill out depth chart and keep some space for in-season injuries. In 2018 your draft is largely focused on QB and really BPA thereafter.

Given our likely QB situation we would be better off signing a WR who can best work the short/intermediate areas as opposed to deep threats. Jackson will run out of Hoyer's range in 1.5 seconds, and he'll grow tired of all the WR screens (and big hits) he'll have get.
