I’m more of the mindset that if Trubisky continues to flounder then maybe we should look to see what one of these two guys can do before we totally do as you suggest and throw a bunch of other ‘things’ at a hopeful Franchise QB. I’m not suggesting either of them would be that guy just that if we could get any measurable and respectable production out of them we may not be as in an emergent situation. And I’d really hate to squander where the team is now with the defensive side of the ball. However if (as Adam hinted) Andrew Luck were interested in coming out of retirement, I’m totally good with that. Even if Mitchell gets better, he’d still be a hell of a backup.

He looks to me as a poor man's version of Shaheen. I say 'poor mans' because Shaheen cost the team a second round pick and Holtz cost next to nothing. His college highlight film is pretty nice; appears to be a decent pass receiver from what they show. He played at Pitt and we know not all TE's from Pitt are bad right? Just ask Ditka.

Message received. I'm just saying Bray looked better playing the offense in the pre-season. I know it was a vanilla offense but we were led to believe the Mitch had a handle on the more complex version and here we are discussing his future with the team. I also know that Daniels didn't look all that hot in spot duty (this preseason) but he knows the offense and looked better last year in relief than Mitch did Thursday...

Hmmm..intriguing thought. I mean when/if Gronkowski comes out of retirement what's to say Luck couldn't or wouldn't? He would be a pretty sweet backup if for nothing else.

Perhaps I'm biased but the video I presented does a pretty good job in identifying the successes and the 'not-so' in the last game. I don't see it as slant to downplay Trubisky's performance anymore than your video was parlaying more the positives. In fact I think one infamous play showed the one where he was very nearly picked off while throwing across the body to Patterson when Robinson was crossing underneath with single TRAILING coverage. He (Robinson) would've quite literally passed under Trubisky's line of sight while he looked to chuck the ball from right to left across the field. Which makes me go back to the lack of preparation. He isn't the only one that suffered from this. Its clear the offensive line struggled with some of their assignments and the offense in general struggled due to lack of reps. Something that bothered me last year and again this year. I'm hoping for a marked improvement this week although my expectations are tempered due to them playing against Fangio.

They were there. Just not used.

Saw this analysis put up after the game (below). Pretty fair I would say, all things considered. Talks about 'Trubisky trying to do too much' but also shows how he locks on one player and misses players on drag, crossing or flat routes; aka routes set up to help him.

I hadn't realized that Fangio had been a Defensive Coordinator for five teams; Panthers (1995-98), Colts (99-2001), Texans (2002-2005), 49ers (2011-2014) and the Bears (2015-18). Knowing he probably had some say in some of the players acquired, he definitely was able to get the best out of them, especially when with the 49ers and Bears. While with the 49ers the lowest his defenses was ever ranked was No 5 overall (first two years) and while with the Bears (14th - year one, and 15th year two). His previous stops showed more regression so maybe something clicked once he got to San Francisco? At any rate, I don't think he's overrated at all as a DC...especially these days. Like Adam pointed out, being an HC is a totally different ball of wax and we'll have to wait and see how that goes. After seeing their game last night, I'm a little less concerned with how their offense (most notably Flacco) will perform. But I'm not the least bit convinced our Bears (especially Nagy and Trubisky) can look past their D.

I was going to say this after the conclusion of the Thursday game but felt emotions would be too raw. I predict that Trubisky will no longer be the starting QB next year (if not sooner). I agree with Adam that "if we lose to Denver" not only will things only get worse, I'd like to see what Daniel or even Bray could do in this offense. I'm not kidding when I say Bray considering how solid (to me) he looked in the preseason. Yes I know its a bit cliché to wish for the backup when the starter sucks, but it is what it is.

Trubisky threw into double coverage, with a single receiver. Rodgers did too except there were two receivers right next to each other, which by itself is an issue. You could tell with Rodgers his was more a ‘what the heck, why not throw’. And Jimmy Graham made the play due to his b-ball background. The thing of it, Rodgers has done this countless times and won. Trubisky has tried a few times and failed, like he did Thursday...and almost a few other times during that game.

Yeah. My first blush on this game is how well Flacco goes so goes Denver. If he plays well they win. You can bet the Broncos D will be dangerous.

I’m watching the Cleveland / Titans game to see the newest iteration of OBJ and how he and the new Browns do. So far this game has been a predominately defensive contest. With the running of Henry making most of the difference on the offensive side of the ball (so far). There also has been a fair share of penalties indicating the Bears and Packers were not the only ones playing sloppy ball the first week out. Oh, Case Keemun has thrown over 250 yards and 2 TDs in the first half for Washington in a 20-7 lead over Philly.
-
Of course he did. Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if that wasn’t his plan all along....
-
Agreed. Still baffles me that it seems they didn’t give Montgomery a chance to get any rhythm. He had some nice runs (and one great catch) but seemed to have been shelved for much of the game. Like others have noted, there was no reason to pass as much as they did, not with the score as close as it was.
-
Yeah unfortunately I think you’re right. He looked as confused as he did most times last year. I did see him audible a bit more than I recall seeing before but that may have been a bad choice on Nagy’s part. That is letting him do it. Rumor has it that Trubisky audibled out of a few running plays to passing plays; may explain the 40+ pass attempts? I can’t believe Nagy would be that foolish to call passes that often? And yes there were too many gimmicky plays this time. Those should be used sparingly, not constantly. Trubisky went back to locking on receivers several times when he went to throw. Had it not been for Robinson’s unbelievable talent it’s hard to say how many actual pass yards he would’ve ended up with. Someone here (I think) said Robinson makes mediocre QBs look good. All I can say is ‘yup’.
-
Absolutely right. I hope Nagy is able to recover from this. I really like what he’s doing, culture-wise, with the team. I keep seeing comments about how last year the team also lost the opener but to me there was no comparison. Some similarities yes, mostly that no one really played in the pre-season (which I hate) but that’s about it. Last year the offense and the D clicked and the D lost steam. Rodgers was Rodgers and came back to win the game. This year, the offense never got on track. The D did its best but even then it looked a little more timid...I said a little more, not much. I still can’t get over how different Mack looked in last years season opener vs this year. And this year with a whole offseason to practice with the team. Anyhow, it’s clear the trajectory out of the gate...right now...isn’t going the same way. Especially on offense.

Agreed that most teams look sluggish for the first 3-4 regular season games, but all the teams will be hitting that stride about the same time. We can’t afford to have the team go 1-3 or 0-4 while they figure things out. I saw Wims our there quite a bit as the Y receiver and expected him to be more involved. Not sure but my rough estimate is Trubisky looked at him maybe 1-2 times. The rest of the majority of the time he was locked into Robinson. D came out strong and to me looked like they gassed out late in the game. Mack was a factor early on but not much after that. Amazing if you compare his game one this year versus last year. I agree that Smith is something special. He fell prey to the lack of playing time too when he disappeared for most of the third quarter then came roaring back in the 4th. RRH is a solid player. He was last year and appears to be again this year. I’m not overly concerned about the D going forward. If this is Trubisky looking prepared and making an improvement after one year under Nagys offense; we’re in for a long year.
