  1. All of that sounds very doable, but if we sign Mincy, I dont think we will draft a DE that high, maybe another DT

Agreed. If all that happens, I'd like the draft to have offense in the first three rounds.

  2. It would be fun to watch the defense if he comes here, but I fear we cant upgrade the OL and WR spot to satisfy Cutler. His contract is up in two years, and if he takes a beating again for another year,I guarantee he wont be coming back. He has waited for 3 years for them to improve on offense, if we blow him off for another year?

Valid worry. I share it. Then we go back to a QB drought for 20 more years. It's baffling that the Bears finally got a franchise QB, we finally got a guy to cheer, and the team just won't support him.

Would I love to see Williams crash in the OL and meet Peppers in the backfield for a QB sandwich? Yes. At the expense of the massive holes on offense? IDK. It's definitely a gamble. The only way this would make sense would be if the Bears pretty much devoted the rest of the offseason and draft to the Offense.

  3. Frankly, I think if it were easily done, it'd be done already when the team doesn't have to compete with the rest of the league for him.

The only reasons why it wouldn't be done so far are...if he thinks he's worth more on the open market than teh Bears, or the Bears want to test their other options before moving on him.

All of that may be true. If so, he can take a hike.

  4. Agreed. The only route he runs full speed is a go route, and thats on the plays specifically designed for him. All this talk of 1000 yards and 10 TD's is hilarious. Must not understand the niners offense.

Count me as one who is glad he signed elsewhere.

10/1000 was mentioned as what I thought he could do with the Bears (because of the lack of surrounding WR talent), not on other teams. He most likely will not get those numbers with the Niners because Alex Smith sucks, and they're a running team.

  5. Yes you are right.........how many times did Rodgers get sacked in the 5 wide set or Manning or Brees when they ran it???? You dont understand that this spreads the defense so once you get the ball oyt quick there will e hole for the WR to run.

You don't understand that the Bears don't have the OL any of the other QBs have. Particularly Manning or Brees. Rodgers had a below average OL, but still better than the Bears. Also, you have to factor in the offense they play is considerably different than the Bears, one that actually utilizes quick-slants. We all should know since that pattern has absolutely destroyed the Bears for over a decade when playing the Packers.

In an ideal world, spreading out the D with a 5-WR set creates a favorable mismatch for the offense because someone slower on D ends up covering a WR. But that's an ideal world. The problem is, either the #1 option has to get open a very large percentage of the time, or the OL has to hold up long enough to get to option #2. Which is, surprise, surprise, why the Bears need a #1 WR and OL help. Neither of the situations were true, and 5-WR sets resulted in Cutler getting his ass handed to him.

  6. Do you play fantasy football? You can take him as your #1 WR where ever he plays, for all the love you have for him. Just because you were the first to think of Moss doesnt mean its still a good idea. If we add some quality, picking him up would be a bonus, but to be our focus going forward, not very smart.

Nice, comparing apples to dump trucks. Please try to keep up with the various posts related to Randy Moss. Reading comprehension also helps...the comment you replied to even says that I think he's a great #2 option.

Not only was this an idea I've been talking about for years, it's one that fits the Bears this season VERY well. Hopefully he wouldn't be the #1, and the Bears would actually sign a #1, but if everything else went to hell and he was the only WR signed, he would be a better #1 than anyone currently on the team. Ideally, however, either the Bears get a #1 in FA (Colston/VJax) or spend a high pick on a stud with upside (Floyd). Pairing either creates a situation where Moss can't be double-teamed and he torches defenses. This is something I've said numerous times. If he's good enough to interest the Saints and the Niners, he should be good enough to interest the Bears. Regardless of whether they want him to be the #1, #2, #3, or a decoy.

  7. V Jack

    Super Mario

    Nicks

    Colston

If the Bears are going to go after 1 big time FA, which one do you think will pay off the most?

Im torn on this one 2 reasons

Nicks, makes Cutler and Forte lives easier in both the pass and run, there still is a chance to draft a WR or even sign a wr like Royal and Draft one too

Mario- makes the entire defense better, CB and Safety both become less important of needs(still a need but not as imnportant), G-Men did it with the best Dline in the NFL. Also gets the D younger.

I have watched very little on Vjack, is this guy a top 5 WR(i know he tore the Bears up)??? I feel that you never hear him mentioned when they talk about the best WR in the NFL, Fitz, A Johnson, B Marshal, Bowe, R White, C Johnson. shit Steve Johnson got more PUB then Vjack.

    1. Williams. Teams up with Peppers to make the Bears one of the best defenses in the NFL. Automatically upgrades the secondary and DTs.

    2. Nicks. Same as Williams for the offense. He'd make the players around him better, open better holes for Forte, allow Cutler more time to throw, and the WRs more time to run around and get open.

    3. Colston. Cheaper than VJax, maybe a little worse. Big upgrade over current WRs. Gives Cutler more room for error.

    4. VJax. More expensive than Colston, maybe a little better. Big upgrade over current WRs. Gives Cutler more room for error.

  8. The part where it says TE should be far down the list of priorities. If that position is far down the list of priorities, then it doesn't get Kellen Davis signed because signing him is a low priority.

Upgrading the position from last year can be considered a low priority. But having someone at the position must be a high priority.

It's still a low priority, but I'd like to see Davis signed as the TE. Just because something is a low priority doesn't mean it can't happen. Since he probably has nearly no other interest, it should be an easy signing for the Bears. They throw out an offer and see if he bites. If so, great. But if he put up a fight, he can wait. Spaeth will do in a pinch.

  9. One of the rare instances on this board when everyone is in agreement. Bad idea because of salary and age. If he takes a lot less, and the trade difference is negligible, then yes. But that's not going to happen. Scratch the idea.

  10. Kellen Davis is not a tight end on the Chicago Bears right now. The only Tight End the Chicago Bears have under contract is Spaeth.

What part about, "I like Davis' potential. I'd like to see him signed..." do you not understand?

  11. The Redskins are stupid!!!!! Ever since they won the Superbowl they have been making bad moves and are doing it again. All those picks for a Rookie QB that will not be your so called savior!! 100 million for a washed up DT. Buying your team Snyder will not work. If you get Griffin and Jackson spending all the picks and money...then what? You cant pay the other players you need and can't draft the top players either......lol!!! Now lets say the Redskins are 3-13 next year you wont even have a first round pick...LOL And if the Rams are 8-8 they have two or three....ha ha ha

I think buying your team does work, just not the way he does it.

For a gazillionaire, it's odd that he doesn't realize a twenty dollar bill and a pocket full of nickels is worse than a wad of five dollar bills.

  12. Agreed. What kills me is we seem like all our o-lineman. Pompeii reports we're sticking with J Webb & he can be the answer at LT. Carimi's #1 pick. Tice drools over Louis & C Williams at guard. We love Garza & gave Spencer 6 million.

If we were going to play C Williams at tackle, we'd have done it last year. Seemingly the only o-line position we need is a guy to push Carimi & J Webb. How can we like our guys so much and our line be so bad?

Beats the shit out of me. I think everyone on this board knows my stance on the subject. Hutchinson, Grubbs, Nicks, everyone else, should be at least an option. There is no way anyone who understands football can be all that impressed with anyone on the Bears' OL last year. Least of which is obviously Webb, who shouldn't be starting in the NFL. We have a G at C (Garza), a C at G (Spencer), a G at T (Louis), and a T at G (Williams). IDK WTF Tice and the coaches are looking at unless someone in the management chain has simply said that they are not going to spend on OL in the draft or FA. Simply put, building the OL into a cohesive strength of the team amplifies the value of every single skill position moreso than the other way around. And it makes the team's franchise guy (Cutler, not Forte), safer. It's simple yet so difficult for them to comprehend. There's a reason why the Bears offense hasn't really scared anyone in quite some time.

  13. Bennett is a #3, Knox will be out of football by the time the first regular season game is played, and Hester is only at 5 because he will still be on the team. We need another #2 WR as a draft pick and at the a4th spot a second tier WR. You should stick to bingo.

I didn't know you were intimately related to the Knox family and/or the Chicago Bears medical staff! Good to know.

Bennett is more than capable of being a #2. All he lacks is targets and a legit #1 to protect him in the offense.

  14. Teams that are out Washington

    Possibilities Washington

HA!!!! Obvious mistake. I copied and pasted teams all around and couldn't figure out why I had Washington in the bottom section. Couldn't remember the thought process that made me put them in the bottom section. Then I thought to myself, "Did I do that because of money?" Shoulda scrolled up.

  15. But there's a limit to how many touches can go around even with the great offenses. Look at the super bowl teams last year for example...the Giants went with 3 WR threats, with a TE and their RB's. Nicks, Cruz, Manningham, their RB rotation, and then Ballard their TE. I can't even tell who their 4th WR is from looking at their stats, everyone with more than 10 catches is listed as a running back or a TE.

The Patriots have the 2 big TE threats, then Welker and then Branch on the outside. They had a moderate running game, but then only completed about 30 passes to RB's the whole season, and then they have guys like Edelman and Ochocinco who really didn't bring all that much even for a heavy throwing offense.

In both cases, you've got the Running backs and then basically 4 plausible receiving targets if you include the TE, the 5th guy gets some occasional touches.

I can even play the same game with the Saints. You've got their Running backs, led by Sproles as a receiving threat, Graham and Colston, then a huge drop down to about 30-50 catches each for Henderson, Moore, and Meacham. After that, blah. Basically they have 1 extra guy getting catches.

These great offenses have depth, but that depth is enabled by the fact that they have a number of guys who are good enough to get the ball in their hands regardless of what the defense does. The Bears don't have a TE right now since Davis is a FA, that's a problem. But if you try to build a roster for the Bears, you need 3 WR's, one of whom is Bennett and neither of whom are Knox and Hester, a TE who can catch the ball, and then Forte + a TD hog out of the backfield.

Knox and Hester, if Knox ever plays again, ought to be more than enough to fill up that "4th WR who catches 20-40 passes". Hell, Hester caught 26 last year and that offense was a joke for 1/2 the season. And especially if you can have Knox, Hester, or hell, Sanzenbacher or Davis wind up the guy who is constantly single-covered or forgotten about because the defense has to double team Jackson...then that sets things up just fine.

    Bingo.

    To simplify:

    #1 - VJax

    #2 - Bennett

    #3 - Knox/Rookie/Sanz/Roy

    #4 - Knox/Rookie/Sanz/Roy

    #5 - Hester

Where does one more WR fit into the equation? The answer: He doesn't. Signing VJax and drafting one WR in the first couple rounds is plenty. The thing about lots and lots of toys is that you have to have time to play with them. Right now, Cutler doesn't have that time.

  16. Teams that are out

Washington - Out. He won't play Eli twice per year.

NYJets - Out. Doesn't make sense since he doesn't like media scrutiny.

Minn - Bad WRs, below average OL, and Christian Ponder.

    Teams that are improbable

Denver - I have a hard time believing he'd go to a team with obvious flaws to their passing offense.

SF - They don't appear to be making much of a push.

    Arizona - Horrible OL

    Possibilities

Seattle - Dome, money to spend, one glaring hole: QB

Miami - Great weather, no state tax, Brandon Marshall

Kansas City - Similar to Indy market, Bowe, good running game, fanatic fans

    Washington - $$$

  17. Hate to say it...but I kinda think that's almost overkill...Think about this...sign 2 WR, including Royal, then your top 3 WR are signee, signee, Bennett, with Hester and Knox (hopefully) already there, plus there's TE needs unless Davis is signed...

Now where is this 2nd round draftee going to get his catches from? Even in the ideal situation, he's sitting 4th on that depth chart, and the Bears aren't exactly known for their 4 WR sets. I don't really want to draft a guy in the first or 2nd and then have him sitting there behind 3 other guys...those picks could make a bigger difference elsewhere if the WR slots are filled by FA. A 3rd rounder, ok, I don't mind him sitting as much because he might need more time to be brought in, but a 2nd rounder?

Basically, the only way the 2nd round/1st round pick gets legit playing time if 2 WR's are signed is if someone gets hurt, and that's not the place I'd put that high of a draftee.

Same thing I've been trying to get across to the "sign two WRs and draft one high"-camp. It makes no sense. It's overkill.

  18. If we win the SB, Moss could have a career year elsewhere for all I care...

No doubt. But if the Bears struggle offensively, none of the FA/Draft WRs step up to become a #1 or a serious threat, and Moss puts up 1000yds and 10TDs, we'll all know that the search for a WR wasn't thorough enough for such a pressing issue.

  19. I'm not sure what our track record is turning bargain basement guys into gems...

A Adams was OK, Jennings was fair at times. Overall, our only real success has seemed to come from getting a bonafide stud or through the draft.

It could very well be a "coaching-up" issue many of us have had concern with over the years. But, I simply would rather get 1 blue chip guy over a handful of so-so discards from other systems.

Completely agreed. That's why I'm making the same case in regards to the pu-pu platter of WRs in the other thread. But at the same time, if the coaches think they can catch lightning in a bottle with a FA acquisition that has promise, I don't have a problem with it. I think it's a potentially sound move with minimal downside. Playing that same game with multiple FAs who are getting interest from several teams, however, is potentially expensive.

  20. Meachem also has very very few drops during his career. I've seen a couple article who indicate that NFL scouts think Meachem is a better bit to succeed outside of New Orleans than Colston. Apparently there are quite a few scouts (based upon some articles I've read) who think Colston is more of a system guy where as Meachem is the type of guy who should excel in the typical pro sets ran in the NFL. I think Meachem would be a really solid signing. Dude is talented and I'm sick of the Bears having this untalented hacks at the position.

I'd probably argue that 3 of the 4 wideouts listed above, whether pu-pu or not, are better than the Bears wideouts (maybe with the exception of Bennett but I base a lot of Bennett on what he did with Cutler when healthy; his injury issues have to be something you worry about though).

Perhaps. Which is why I stated earlier that Meachem is the only one that really makes me curious. But in the end, I think he's still very comparable to what the Bears currently have (assuming Knox can return to health). But I'm not completely convinced he's a massive upgrade in talent. Probably a slight upgrade, but that's about it.

If the Bears are trying to go from D+ or C- to C+ and B-, then so be it. I don't think that helps that much, but I have to admit it is an upgrade. But if they're going to get a WR, I'd much rather see them make an attempt at an A+ rather than knowing the best they'll get is a B.
