Technically, don't we need a MLB, since the front office decided Bostic is a OLB.
-
Tillman is just a flat out great corner. I hope to hell he doesn't play for anyone but the Bears. And if he eventually is open for a move to safety, even better.
-
Even crazier as to why we haven't just fired Tucker and hired Phillips.
-
if it happened before I was born, it doesn't count . That is actually good to know. I always assumed Kiffin created it but I guess he just brought it back "en vogue". Completely agree on Phillips. It is just a no brainer, especially when you have a coach like Trestman who has routinely ran DC's out (see CFL era). Why not just give him a guy like Wade who flat out can run the show on the defensive side and limit what Trestman has to worry about.
-
I said defensive coordinator. Dom Capers is highly mediocre for a large chunk of his career. Kiffin routinely had elite defenses during his reign. yes, most of it was during the bucks but he did lead and pretty much invent the famous cover 2 D that worked extremely effectively for a long time. LeBeau is also an elite D coordinator. To me, in the past 20 years, you basically have Kiffin, Lebeau, and Wade Phillips. They have consistently proven to be elite DC's.
-
Kiffin is probably past his prime, but he is arguably the greatest DC in NFL history. If you are going to give anyone some slack, he'd be the guy. And to be frank, I probably would have fired him too. It would seem like he's lost it a bit (given his tenure at USC and what happened at Dallas). However, his track record vs. Tucker's track record is not even in the same stratosphere.
-
Lets not compare Monte Kiffin and Mel Tucker.
-
That is those teams stupidity and I at least understand if those teams have competent DC's. Last I checked our defense was one of the worst in NFL history this past year and the worst in franchise history. Not sure any other defense could say that, outside of say Dallas, and you could understand why Dallas wouldn't call Phillips (and I'm guessing Phillips wouldn't answer).
-
Its utter bullshit. Bears should have thrown him a blank check to run the D. Instead we are stuck with the Turd Tucker.
-
Interesting. I had been wondering if old Singletary was going to come on down.

FML, Entire staff is back for next year minus DL Coach...

I still can't get passed this. This is completely embarassing and i think most everyone knows I tend to be a pretty pro-coach guy and relatively patience in terms of coaching as I think consistency within organizations can be extremely beneficial (with the right people). However, Tucker & Decammilis were clear failures at pretty epic levels and it is completely inexcuseable in my opinion that this people retained their jobs. Our Dline/LB coaches should be canned (production and development sucked; especially our LB coach). The lack of fundementals displayed on this defense (and our ST unit) was sickening and that is coaching, coaching, coaching. I wonder if Trestman's reputation in Canada caused the Bears to stick around for one more year (with a fear that no good DC would come here since Trestman cans them all the time). -

If Tucker sucks, Trestman should be in trouble. I hate this idea. Really bad. Clearly getting rid of dine coach makes sense but Dcoord should have been gone as should ST coach. Pathetic. freakin pathetic. It couldn't be more clear how poorly coached both units went. We went from tops in the league in special teams and defense to being pretty shitty. -
Exactly. Injuries aside, this team wasn't prepared more often then not and that falls on Tucker.
-
Who are you referring to? Is it someone in Seattle or San Francisco? I want the guy the Browns fired, Horton. Well, really I want Phillips more then anything and would just give him a blank check.
-
That was my thoughts. However, I think the ESPNChicago tweet has more to do with changes to their radio station vs. chicago sports news but I could be wrong.
-
It either has nothing to do with his contract or it is him signing with the Bears. No one else can sign him. I truly hope it is an extension because i Love Peanut. He is a true leader and the epitome of a high character individual that plays in the NFL. Oh and he's still a very good football player. I hope he moves to FS but I don't want him to play a game anywhere else. Tillman is 100 times the man that Urlacher is/was.

Hopefully the 1st of many probowl appearances for Alshlon!

I was just going to post this. Those are some very nice cap numbers.
-
I presume it means Long might be moving to tackle.

What are you talking about? Emery did? The market was set. See the Stafford, Romo, Ryan, and Flacco deals. I would take Cutler over 2 of those players and put him on pretty even footing with Romo. Ryan is better but this past year was a major step back for him. I like Cutler more then Flacco and Stafford.
-
The GB player made a great play on Peppers. That's it. Emery talked about Peppers and said that Peppers had an 8-8 season just like everyone else. I think it would be wise to bring Pepp back but he'll need to restructure and hopefully he will. Is Wooten under contract? He is, right? I don't think we can afford to be replacing an entire line, I'd think we'd start by replacing 2 players on the d-line and adding depth. A lot of the defensive needs will be determined based upon what Phil/Trest decide the strategy will be going forward. It sounds like Shea/Bostic are both going to move outside which might mean Briggs is on his way out. That said, Emery was pretty damn complimenting of Briggs and Briggs could be a pretty good player as one of the two interior LB's in a 3-4. I'd really love Peanut back as our safety. Dline has to be fixed and DT has to be the biggest priority. I think we will sign Bennett's brother and then focus heavily on the tackle / lb position in the draft. Would be curious if we make a run at Byrd for safety as clearly we have to make some changes their as well.
-
Emery took full responsibility and said he didn't provide the team with the appropriate depth to overcome the injuries, etc. Emery said Shea didn't have enough impact plays and didn't play to his potential. Trestman said Shea is capable of more and the Bears coaches must take responsibility in his development because the talent is there. Basically they said he played crappy, but we aren't going to cut him, and we see potential and will work for him to take steps forward. Emery also indicated he sees bostic as an OLB vs. MLB.

Trestman and Cutler are now tied at the hip and I love it (Kromer too...as Cutler excelling over the next couple years would create a great opportunity for him to move on and take a HC gig). Cutler was by far the most mature and best player this year (despite injuries) and it was year 1 in the system. He'll have a full off-season to work with his receiving corps and our coaching staff and continue to refine this offense, which should be a great thing. Sounds like this is a 3 year lock-up and then if you want to go longer and Jay is producing you do, otherwise you have the option of moving on. If this move works, Trestman will retire with the Bears, imo, because we'll have the QB play and offense to be able to consistently win in this league and make the playoffs. They HAVE to fix the defense though and I appreciated the honesty out of Emery/Trestman regarding Shea and the defense as a whole.
-
Agreed. However, it is interesting that they didn't mention it in the press conference. I'd have thought if they were ready they'd announce it. Maybe they didn't want to cloud this positive press conference with the negatives of the DC. Or maybe they are waiting to see if the right candidate becomes available. The big issue with Trestman is he has a major history of offing defensive coordinators so there could be some risk that you fire Tucker and end up unable to bring people back because the overall consensus in the league is he didn't get a fair deal. Easy for an outsider to talk about the injuries and use it as an excuse. My issue was how out of position our defensive players were consistently. That said, Cutler indicated Tucker wouldn't be going anywhere and I have to think Cutler is pretty in the know. I also think it is pretty crazy that there wasn't any leaks. Bears front office seems to be tight lipped.

Emery didn't mess around and given how many things the club has to address, glad this got done. I really would love to see Tillman come back and play safety but I figure tillman will end up in Tampa and reunite with Lovie and Marinelli.
