  1. I was listening to someone talk on the radio and they indicated that St. Clair is will be a significant upgrade at the guard position. Apparently the Bears are very high on him as a guard and because of that they won't really look around at Brown much (unless they plan on replacing Garza).

The one thing that hurts is St. Clair moving to guard means you really don't have a backup tackle (unless you plan on moving St. Clair outside if anyone goes down and bringing in Metcalf which would be horrid).

  2. The Giants clearly didn't need Shockey to win the superbowl so this makes them better in the sense that they don't have to worry about any off the field stuff regarding Shockey trying to jockey a trade. They'll also get draft picks (I'd have to imagine at least a 2nd round pick would be heading the Giants way). The Saints have significantly upgraded there receiving corps (Shockey is a hell of a receiving TE) and when you factor in Colston/Bush/Deuce (he'll be back) along with Drew Brees the offense should be more explosive than ever.

  3. Thats a whole lot of cap room to still have available. I'm assuming Williams signing will take up a solid chunk of that available cap room because I don't think the Urlacher deal will have a significant impact on that. This also means the Bears will have a significant amount to throw towards Hester or anyone else that they are interested in extending (while using this years portion of the cap).

  4. Bears | T. Harris predicts Super Bowl

    Thu, 17 Jul 2008 16:31:48 -0700

The NFL Network reports Chicago Bears DL Tommie Harris feels the defense has the capabilities to be the best in the league and predicts the team going to the Super Bowl.

I sure as hell hope he's right. The last time he made the prediction they made it. If the defense is 100% all season, anything is possible (and it would definitely allow the offense to buy time and develop).

  5. They aren't far apart but I think the key is no one near him has signed a deal yet so that has been causing the final hold-up. I think if it gets closer to Wed you'll see the Bears sweeten the deal just a bit and get things done regardless of whether the other teams around the Bears have signed (neither side is far apart so I'd be stunned if there was a holdout).

  6. Washington keeps picking up awesome players, especially on defense, over the years and yet they never seem to do squat once signed with them. I bet Taylor is a wash out. He has already said he only wants to play one more year. Doesn't sound too motivated to me.

I think I read where of all of the players Washington has signed since Snyder took over none of them have made the pro-bowl as a RedSkin. I think Portis has made it (traded for) but considering all of the major signings they have had in the Snyder area, that is pretty telling. It also tells you how a good franchise is successful (and its not by getting its best players in FA, its by drafting well and using FA to fill any minor holes or a final piece).

However, given the circumstances (losing 2 DE's in one day) I can't knock the Skins. Taylor is an absolute monster (even though he's older) and the only real question is whether he stays healthy and how long he'll stay. Assuming he holds true to his word and is around for 2 seasons this isn't a terrible deal, however, if he demands more money or walks at the end of this year than a 2nd rounder is far too much (especially considering that Taylor isn't the piece to put the Skins over the top, hell, I don't think the Skins make the playoffs with Taylor).

  7. Bears | Bradley's status for start of camp unknown

    Mon, 21 Jul 2008 07:16:58 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears WR Mark Bradley's (knee) status for the start for training camp is unknown.

I realize this isn't really new news. However, the fact that the Bears are said to be counting on this guy as the potential #1 is a joke. A, he hasn't proven anything in the NFL. B, The only thing he has proven is that he can't stay on the field.

It sounds like Brandon Lloyd has impressed so we have to really hope that he just died in the pit that is Washington and is now rejuvenated and ready to get back to doing what he did early on in his career in San Fran (where people were raving about his upside).

  8. According to sources, Urlacher and the Bears have come to terms on a revised contract, which includes a one-year extension, thus ending their offseason contract squabble.Urlacher, 30, had four years and approximately $25.5 million remaining on his contract. Under the terms of the upgraded deal, Urlacher will receive a $6 million signing bonus along with a $1 million bump in salary each of the next four years. The sides also have agreed to extend the pact into 2012, at a salary of $7.5 million. Urlacher can earn an additional $500,000 in a workout bonus in 2012.

That's a total of roughly $43.5 million over the next five years, with $18 million in new money for the six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All Pro.

Its outstanding that we can now put this behind us. The next thing on the burner has to be Chris Williams, whom I'm guessing signs within the next 24 hours (definitely by Wednesday). After that I think the Bears will work early in training camp on getting Hester happy and if they do that you can honestly say they accomplished a hell of a lot this off-season with the only major mistake being related to not franchising Bernard Berrian.

Thats not to say that this team doesn't have serious question-marks, but overall I was quite pleased with the draft and off-season (aside from Benson being an idiot).

  9. Realistically I think you hope Jones is ready to take a few snaps by the final pre-season game and is back to being able to contribute 10-15 carries by Week 4 of the season. Than by Week 8, maybe he's ready to go as high as 20 carries for the time being.

  10. I would absolutely love to get a premier WR. It would do wonders for the offense. However, I don't think the Bears have the resources to acquire Boldin (you bet your ass that I'd give up a 1st and more to get him and than sign him to a fat extension).

However, what was Booker's injury? I didn't realize he was hurt.

  11. Sweet.

So, are we now keeping 4 backs? If Jones proves to be healthy and ready to play, are Wolfe and AP fighting for job?

I think they will carry 4 backs and one fewer WR. This is because Peterson has incredible value as a special teams player and the Bears just aren't going to give up on Wolfe after one year (on the right roster, Wolfe is a solid pick cause he is very effective as a receiver out of the backfield).

  12. Bears sign running back Kevin Jones

    July 15, 2008

    BY BRAD BIGGS Staff Reporter

Seven days before the Bears are to report for training camp the club deemed running back a need, signing veteran Kevin Jones.

The former first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions checked out medically Tuesday morning and signed a one-year contract worth $605,000. Jones comes on board five weeks after Cedric Benson was launched following his second offseason arrest, and provides some depth to a position the team still expects rookie Matt Forte to anchor.

Returning from a torn ACL suffered on Dec. 23, Jones might not immediately be on the practice fields at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., and could be a candidate for the physically unable to perform list. Jones had visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week and was linked as a possibility for the Pittsburgh Steelers and finally caught interest from the Bears, who otherwise were heading into the season with veteran Adrian Peterson and 2007 third-round pick Garrett Wolfe backing Forte.

Jones also suffered a Lisfranc ligament injury in his left foot in 2006 and the injuries, combined with Mike Martz’s pass-happy offense in Detroit derailed what was a promising start to his career. After coming out of Virginia Tech, Jones rushed for 1,133 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie in 2004. Although he scored a career-high eight touchdowns last season, he put up only 581 yards on 153 rushes (3.8 average) before the injury. His best effort of the year came in the Lions’ 16-7 victory at Soldier Field when Jones ran for 105 yards and a score on 23 carries.

With a one-year contract, Jones has the opportunity to prove he’s healthy with an eye on a lucrative longterm deal, and the club that gets off the bus running fortifies itself in the backfield.

Fantatstic news. I can't be happier about the Bears finally getting someone signed. He's had injury concerns but should be a nice guy to have around to ensure that the Bears are able to ease Forte into his career. He is obviously returning very quickly from an ACL injury so I think our expectations should be to hope he is able to play in one preseason game and can work his way up to being a 10-15 carry a guy for the Bears by about the 3rd week of the season (which is just perfect cause that should help shelter Forte enough to prevent him from hitting some sort of rookie wall by week 12).

  13. Favre would clearly be an upgrade and Bentley and Jones would be tremendous pickups if they could regain health. In terms of Henry he would be a significant upgrade to what is the worse WR corps in the league but I don't think its one the Bears make (given how they've been burned with Tank and Benson over the past two years).

  14. This is fantastic news. Glad to see the Bears didn't have there heads up there collective butts regarding this whole RB issue. Hopefully he passes his physical and will be good to go towards the end of pre-season. Having him here to help take the pressure off of Forte will be huge, plus Jones has shown he can handle a load at the RB spot previously in his career (although he never lived up to his hype coming out of the draft).

  15. look for Kevin Jones to sign with either the Bears or Bucs tommorow. A Kevin Jones- Matt Forte duo might work. Jones looked better toward the end of the season with Detroit last year. Before they think about signing Simms i hope they give a good look at the Favre situation. He obviously wants out of Green Bay and is pissed they are holding him hostage. If they release him i really hope the Bears at least give his agent a call.

The Bears have been jonesing for a running game since trading Thomas Jones to the Jets in March 2007 – a month after Super Bowl XLI. Can Kevin Jones help supply the potent 1-2 punch that has been missing since that season?

Apparently the Bears are curious enough to take a good look at the ex-Lions running back, a former first-round draft pick who believes he can return to 1,000-yard form after two serious leg injuries the past two seasons.

League sources said Jones was scheduled to fly to Chicago late Monday night in time to take a physical and visit Halas Hall on Tuesday, one week before the Bears will report to Bourbonnais for the start of training camp.

    More Chicago Bears headlines

No contract offer has been extended, but if the Bears are satisfied with the condition of Jones' surgically repaired right knee, it shouldn't be difficult to meet the veteran's terms. A source said Jones would accept a one-year deal to prove to his new team and the rest of the league how healthy and effective he still is.

He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee Dec. 23, leading to his release by the Lions a few months later, but always vowed he would return to fulfill the potential he flashed as a rookie in 2004 when he gain 1,133 yards.

He staged a workout June 28 to make his point and four teams attended the session in Saline, Mich. – the Bears were not among those present. But the team received a tape of the session and kept up with Jones more than they let on.

Initially, when asked about the possibility of signing Jones before the workout, team sources shot down the idea. It's unclear whether Jones' performance at the workout or a shift in team philosophy led to the change of heart.

The Bears have faith in second-round pick Matt Forte but adding a veteran with Jones' potential, even if he's not cleared until early in the regular season, would decrease the pressure on the rookie. If the Bears sign Jones, it would improve their depth and allow Adrian Peterson to return to a special teams role he starred in during 2006.

Surely signing Jones would represent a gamble. But for a team tired of seeing its running backs losing yards, the Bears have nothing to lose.

From the Tribune. Awesome news, sounds like if he shows that he's healthy he'll be a Bear (by tomorrow night if I were to guess).

  16. The Tampa Tribune threw out the Bears as a team supposedly interested in Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms. This could be true, considering Jerry Angelo did like Simms in the past. But there's nothing coming from the Bears' side on this.

We all know about the Bears' quarterback situation, with Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton battling at a position that has been unstable lately. The lefty Simms, if healthy, could put some heat on both players. But Simms hasn't played in a regular-season game since rupturing his spleen in September 2006. Since then, his relationship with Bucs head coach Jon Gruden has deteriorated, and Simms has asked out of town.

Angelo, the former director of player personnel in Tampa, is not afraid to deal with the Bucs. The Bears traded veteran Brian Griese to Tampa Bay for a draft pick this off-season. They also traded with the Bucs during this year's draft to land safety Craig Steltz, a potential starter.

I think this would be a very odd move, considering the Bears already have two unproven QB's on the roster battling things out and adding Simms would only make the process more difficult. This would mean you'd have 3 guys, all capable of being starters, all of whom have flashed some positive signs, battling for one job.

Still, getting Simms gives you a guy who you could turn to if Orton/Rex don't go as planned and could potentially still be a guy that could be groomed as a starter and kept on when the Bears draft a QB next year (under the assumption that Rex/Kyle fail).

If Rex/Kyle succeed, than oh well, Simms is a 3rd stringer this year and moves on to someplace else.

  17. I heard Peter King on today and he said that from what he's heard he thinks the most likely scenario involves Favre coming back and playing on another team.

However, he added that the Packers will not in any way shape or form just release him or enable him to join the Packers (or Bears). The Bucs and Ravens were the two most likely destinations.

  18. It really is hard to say. The guys the Bears lost had played horrid last season, however, you are plugging in a rookie LT and an unproven guard. To be honest I really have no idea what to expect out of this entire team, especially the offensive unit (which could turn out to be one of the worse offenses we've ever seen).

However, if Tait is healthy and dominates at RT (he's capable of it), Kreutz is his solid self, and Garza is his solid self than Williams will have a bit less pressure.

  19. The Bears backfield is horrendous. No team that is planning on going to the playoffs should be relying on a rookie RB. Absolutely none, yet the Bears are calling themselves a playoff contender while they rely on a rookie RB and one of the most unproven WR corps I've seen on a Bears roster (and the Bears have had some pretty crappy WR corps).

Angelo better have a trick up his sleeve or secretly have plans in motion for how he plans on getting the team back to the promised-land. Luckily the Bears have made the playoffs under Lovie with horrible offenses in the past so maybe they'll be able to do it again (I'm talking about the season where Orton was the starter).

  20. Yes, lets trade the guy who has stayed healthy every year.

Nah, lets trade RMJ and rely on the great Trumaine McBride.

McBride was playing over RMJ in Nickel sets last season for a reason. It is because he's a very very nice looking nickel CB (won't be a starting CB, but you are talking about an above average nickel CB who can step in and start if a guy goes down). And that was as a rookie.

  21. How healthy will the Bears be in 2008? Or, Should I ask how will the Bears do in 2008? Are the two in fact the same question, well, maybe....

Here is an article entitled In NFL, the healthy earn respect from DallasNews.com showing the games lost to starters in the 2006 season:

In NFL, the healthy earn respect (2006 Season Charts)

Here is an article entitled Colts keep winning in a painful season from WFAA.com showing games lost to starters in the 2007 season:

Colts keep winning in a painful season (2007 Season Charts)

According to these articles, the Bears went from a team with only 25 games lost to starters in 2006 to 60 in 2007. We have a great weapon on our staff, Rusty Jones. He has done a great job in the past in keeping us relatively healthy as a team. I think last year was just one of those snake-bit years that happens. If we stay healthy this year, we will return to a dominate team, IMO.

Vasher/Tillman are two guys whose injuries probably hurt the Bears more than any other. They aren't what I'd call injury prone (at least not Tillman). However, Urlacher is aging and Tommie Harris has some serious concerns around his knee. I definitely wouldn't claim this is an injury prone defense aside from Mike Brown and Dusty, however, Urlacher is older and Harris has had two straight seasons where he had to play through some serious injuries.

  22. I do not know about being the "greatest defense ever" but I am convinced this year the Bears will place in the top 5 for defense, if not number 1. We have too much talent not to. We are not "old in the tooth" and I disagree with another poster who said we are injury prone. Yes, last year we had a tremendous number of injuries which devastated our performance, however, with the exception of M Brown & Dusty, the remainder of the defense has not been known to be "injury prone".

It is because of my confidence in our return to dominating defense and our superior special teams play that I have strong hopes for our team. Our offense, well, last year we were at the bottom of the barrel, so I have to believe there is only one way to go, and that is up. LOL

Don't get me wrong, I think the Bears have the chance at the playoffs, but the defense will have to be entirely healthy (that means Urlacher & Harris especially need to play at there highest levels) and if thats the case it will be at least a top 5 defense. That will give the Bears some time to work out the offensive kinks. I like Forte and I like some of the potential at the Wr position, although I'm not going to lie when I say the Bears have as bad of a WR core as I've ever seen (yes it has the ability, but Hester is very raw, Bradley has never been healthy, Booker is slowing down and really an ideal slot WR, and you have Bennett who looks nice but is a rookie). That is one horrendous ass WR core. Thankfully Clark/Olsen are a strong TE core.

  23. From the Sporting News Web Site:

I think what Connor says below is pretty accurate. I expect Manning to be traded but the Bears will hold out on dealing him until training camp is going on just to make sure they are protected from an injury. However, the Bears have a lot of guys they really like in the secondary and the emergence of McBride and the selection of Bowman (plus Daniel Manning who plays in nickel packages) makes Manning Jr. a forgotten man.

Thats not to say he didn't have value as he was a key contributor during the Bears superbowl run. I expect anything from a 4th to 7th rounder for him (most likely it will be a conditional type of pick, which will get better based upon Manning's play).

  24. With the offense we have, this lack of respect is is expected.

    Peace :dabears

I'm not going to lie, I wouldn't expect anyone to rank us any higher. The so called great defense was lousy last year (injuries were a primary reason, but the bottom line is the defense was a big reason the team didnt' make the playoffs last season) and the offense has the makings of being worse than any offense in Bears history (we are talking about a team whose oline was the worse in football last year (they upgraded this year at LT, but its a rookie so you really don't know how much of a true-upgrade that will be this year and it still would be a stretch to say that they are a good oline, even if Williams kicks butt right away). The WR core has one over the hill WR who used to be good (not great) and a lot of guys with "potential" (not a one who has ever proven anything in the NFL at the WR position). The RB has never taken a down in the NFL and is a 2nd round pick (that doesn't mean I'm saying Forte will suck, but we aren't talking about a super super hyped #1 overall pick at RB or something) and the depth at the RB position is questioanble (so all reliance is truly on the unproven rookie). At QB you have Rex/Kyle and to be honest, this team could have Tom Brady back there and the offense could still blow (if the RB has growing pains, the OL is mediocre to poor, and the WR core continues to not prove anything).

So unless these defense is the greatest defense ever, I'd be hard pressed to see this team get ranked anything above 20th.
