If that means moving him to a linebacker position as we move forward, that will be under consideration as well. But there's no doubt as Phil and I watched the tape this week that he's capable of more, and we'll work toward that as we move forward. He's got it in him. It's our job as coaches, and it starts with me, to get him in a position to be more successful, and we feel confident we can get that done." Report

January 3, 201412 yr comment_129849 At least they see what we see and will adjust whether it works out, time will tell. I hope we see a 3-4 or some hybrid of it. Resign Ratliff, he was an all pro NT in that scheme and Paea can rotate. Shea I think can play OLB. I think between FA and draft, the roster can be filled. Report
January 3, 201412 yr comment_129858 Looking at the physical size and combine stats of Shea and Urlacher.. they are pretty close.. would moving him to the middle help? Report
January 3, 201412 yr comment_129890 I found it quite refreshing that they will possibly attempt that move while also calling him out in a way. Hopefully this sets a fire under his ass Report
January 3, 201412 yr comment_129908 I don't think Shea needs someone to light a fire under him. I think he's a hard working straightforward hustle-type player who is stuck out of position and will be better used in space more often than not. I like the guy and I like how he works on the field. Kudos to Emery and Trestman for being willing to admit they have not put him in the right spot (and really shouldn't have drafted him). I don't know if we're going to a 3-4 defense but it sounds as if we're heading toward using some 3-4 concepts next year. Other teams have mixed these concepts albeit none that were dominant. OTOH, if we drop the Tampa-2 style defense I'm not so sure Shea couldn't play MLB for us. There are other options besides just switching to a 3-4. Report
January 3, 201412 yr comment_129909 Looking at the physical size and combine stats of Shea and Urlacher.. they are pretty close.. would moving him to the middle help? He played outside linebacker in college in a 3-4. He may have some physical tools similar to 54 but that does not mean will be good at middle linebacker. I played OLB in a 3-4 and tried to move to MLB due to injuries. They are two totally different positions. I dont see them putting him at MLB. Not saying it cant be done but I would think they would put him at a OLB spot. Report

I like the idea of trying to find the next Urlacher, but McClellin would be horrible there. The dude has virtually zero awareness at DE, bombing inside on every play and leaving the outside responsibility wide open. At MLB it would be ugly. Report

At least if they are going to keep him and indeed move Shea to rush from the outside LB position he will provide some containment by default as the time it will take him to loop around the TE instead of the RT while performing his signature "hurricane Shea" spin move will take longer.
