Ugh, Carlin Isles to Detroit.

This is actually a bit of old news, he signed on Jan 10th, but I hadn't heard until just now when I was watching the rugby 7s.....If this guy puts it together he's going to be an absolute pest, think Darren Sproles.

Wish we had a catch all for this sort of stuff.

I dont think you need to worry about it, rugby players dont usually translate to the NFL.

The difference is Isles has world class speed. He may not become Darren Sproles but he can become Detroits Trindon Holliday.

Dude runs a 4.22 40

Maybe, but I dont wish him well, he is not in blue and orange.

No biggie, we signed a kid that ran a 4.28 at the combine and he's a football player....Chris Williams!

I had the same reaction as when the Bears drafted Shea McClellin…"Who?"

If he makes their team, I don't see him making it past kick or punt returning.

As a guy who follows rugby it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he becomes something....also wouldn't surprise me if nothing becomes of him.

With rugby becoming relevant again(first time in 100 years that it's an olympic sport) I think its just a matter of time before we start seeing a few guys making the jump. Just my biased opinion.

I have a passing interest in rugby, and have followed it somewhat since I went to New Zealand. Having said that, I don't give a damn how fast he is on the track. He is not a football player. There is a major difference. And Rugby 7's is of course the perfect place to display his speed. Huge field. If he played normal he probably wouldn't have gotten the recognition. And, unfortunately for him, the offsides rules are the same in the NFL, and he'll have a guy like Richard Sherman raping him up and down the field before a ball is even thrown his way.

Zero F's were given.

He's gonna be a running back. You utilize him the same way the Lions did with Reggie Bush in the passing game and pitch the ball to him out on the edge and he COULD become something.....To me it's no different than NFL teams looking for basketball players to play TE.

I could be wrong but i thought i read that this guy never played rugby until recently. Unless he has a natural gift of picking up Football easily I dont see him becoming a Darren S type player. I played with many gifted speed demons in college that couldnt play a lick of football.

Maaaaaaaaaaybe. The difference between his transition and the basketball-to-TE transition is that their skills translate almost exactly. As a post-up basketball player it's: run to position, establish base, box out, receive pass while blocking defender from pass. Almost exactly what a TE does. As far as sprinter transitioning to football, it's way different. And rugby 7's doesn't even come close to a substitute because of not only the rules, but also the ridiculous spacing advantages.

Reread your post and see who you compared him too. Isn't Bush with Detroit? So with him and Bell etched as their one two punch what would be left for a raw project RB but special teams or practice squad.

I liken him to the Onobun our robo TE, stud body, no football sense. He will never make it, how many Sprinters try to play in the NFL and only a couple made something out it. He is just a name, we will never see in lights.

He is 5'8' 173 llbs, and has only played rugby for 6 months. After training camp will we never here his name again,we found your Marcus Webb for the year, someone you fall in love with that will turn out to be 00000000000000000000000

Perhaps I should of added that I don't think he'll become anything right away. With an athlete like he is though you coach him up for a year and he COULD become something.....

I stress the word COULD because I knew you guys would think I'm calling this a lock, and I'm not....I already admitted that it wouldn't surprise me if he never becomes anything....

That's actually a really good comparison....Why do you think the Bears are hanging on to Fendi or why he keeps getting jobs?? Because of his athletic potential, because if the lights turn on with a guy like Isles or Onubun, you COULD have yourself a really good player....

May not happen now, probably never happens, but with my boredom I just brought it up as something to talk about. The Ugh part was a little over board lol

Also stinger, yes this is just like the "Marcus Webb" argument because again my talk of "potential" is being misconstrued into you guys thinking I'm saying its a lock.

Demps is a kind of a bad comparison, looking at his rotoworld page he spent his whole first year on the IR, then committed back to track, then got hurt again....He's played in 2 games.

I'm gonna let this one go for now though, no need for this thread to be any bigger than it already is..

Has any full-time Rugby player ever made an impact on an NFL roster?

Doing a search I found WWW.postgame.com. it mentions isles making the jump along with Kelvin smith who played briefly with jets before being cut and the colts had adongo last yr but no one that I can find has made any type of impact. The article makes references to paea and ngata who played rugby in High School but no one going from full time rugby over to the NFL

This thread cracks me up.

Jamarcus Webb = Cinnabon = Carlin Isles

SCS, we all get that you fall in love with guys who COULD be good if they got their acts together, but I think the difference lies in the percentages. You see COULD much higher than we do, and you ride the horse straight into the glue factory. The fact of the matter is, all three guys, and a ton of other guys who never amount to much, have incredibly high ceilings, it's just that their feet are cemented to the floor.
