I'm not thinking overhaul either. Definitely, reinvestment with early draft capital. Keep those young DL coming in until it becomes dominant. The back seven will not matter as much as a result.

Every year creates a different set of circumstances. For now, we have players in place but with question marks. Some younger players may grow into roles we have questions at. The draft is going to be our main supply for help, add in cheap FA pickups going forward. If we have a glaring need , Poles will target that but with 20 mil in cap space right now (over the cap 2027) , some players he will let go. For sure Jarret is gone even if he has a big year. (age) If Dayo has a good year , will they still dumb him? Im not sure its an automatic yes. Next years needs has yet to be determined.

I dont think its a sure thing that Jaylon Johnson is gonna stay around thru 2027. Hes a pretty good player, but hes being paid more than hes worth I think. At least since his injury last season when he got on the field he wasnt great. If he plays lights out this year, which I believe he is capable of and has before his injury, then we will keep and feature him. But hes got to be out there. He cant be injured, and hes got to regain his prior form I also agree that DE is super important, and we dont have a real difference maker there. Kyler Gordon isnt long for this team either. CB1, NB1, DE1 & DT are a big part of the identity of a defense, so thats why I guess the word overhaul came to mind. But youre right overhaul is the wrong word. We already have some potential guys in Mohammad, Van Der Berg, Booker and if they all ascend then its just a couple major pieces - CB1 and DE1, but if we need another guy at CB or NB, DT then its more of an overhaul. And I guess i was thinking of the DL mostly. I am worried about our pass rush this year, and i think the back 7 will play better with some threats up front, and those are probably mostly coming next year (I HOPE! Are you listening Poles? LOL) But youre right we have a lot of good emerging pieces! Dillion Theineman is just getting started and hes for real. Coby Bryant is injured but hes for real. Devin Bush is probably a key piece going forward. But the D line is a lot on the come. Montez Sweat isnt irreplaceable. And unless Van Der Berg is the superhero steal that he just might be, we're awfully thin at difference making on the interior too. I think we're like 3rd highest cap space allotted to our defense in the league. Most of that comes off the books next year, and guys like Odeyngbo and Jarrett will need replacing with better/cheaper alternatives. Gervon Dexter is probably gone after next year too. So thats why an "overhaul" (or half of one anyway) Lets say these are the pieces you you need for a defense, the rest being ok to be filled by journeymen? impact DE (need) good DE impact DT (need) impact LB one great CB (need?) one good CB (need?) one good or great NB (need) impact S one good S so we have a core of 4 or 5 of the 9 must haves?

I don’t think there will be an overhaul. We have our starting safeties. We will still have Jaylon Johnson. And I’ll guess one of Stevenson or Muhammed on the other side But it’s possible both If Stevenson grows up. I think somewhere amongst the current group we have our starting LBs for next year. If VDB continues his trajectory he’s a likely starter at DT next year. We need to add another starter. DE. Sweat will still be here. He’s good not great but we need to add not subtract. Booker will be here but could be anything from DE2 to DE4. Same with Turner. Again we need to add a starting caliber player. I expect one of the these needs to be addressed via FA. Big needs remaining LT and DE or DT. Ozzy could still end up a good LT. Not listed Kyler Gordon He’s ours if we want him.

Well it did make some sense when i wrote it, and I hope so, but today im reading both were injured, so I guess not. I have high hopes for this season, but it feels like the real defensive overhaul will be next year.

yes youre right - I read today both Booker and Dexter were injured. Too bad! I guess we should be thankful that the offense will be healthy for opening day (except perhaps/probably Trapilo?) but I have serious concerns about this defense, even healthy, so all the injuries are worrisome for sure. Heard Stevenson went down too. Yikes.

Definitely Kaden Davis gets on the roster. Only IF they did trade Dexter, Street is the next one up that can flex between DT and DE. It seems like Turner will be on the initial pup list that lasts 4 weeks. (I think) Im interested in what they do with Hyppolite. He is starting to show some game. The last training camp practice just wrapped up. Now we head into the final preseason game where several backup spots are in play. Bring on a lunch break and my phone i’m not in a position to do a full 53 But I want to get the conversation started Oline. I think we keep 10 but could just as easily see 9 if Ozzy is close to returning. I’ll need to see the game to make a decision on Wills vs Benedet. 10 would be the team hedging their bets and buying time on the LT competition with both Wills and Benedet. Kaden Davis makes it as the 6th WR. Dline 9. Grady, Dexter, VDB, Gallimore, and Lynch. Booker, Sweat, Dayo, Kromah. Lynch is place holder until Turner is ready to go and he has lined up at DE at times. I listed Kromah but he still needs to earn it in this game.

Josh Sweat would be a horrible trade for us. Just an average pass rusher with little run stopping. I don’t see him as a good fit especially for the contract he has. If Booker is involved then obviously the trade would have to be for a DE. I can’t see that happening and for which player.

I just read that BJ stated Booker's absence is due to a groin injury and his status is "week-to-week!" What is it with the Bears and groin injuries? Someone needs to take a good look at how our strength and conditioning staff is handling them.

Other than Bryant the other injuries seem to be not long term. As far as trading Dexter, rumors fly all the time but with Poles seeking a trade chances are he gets it done. Now I heard another rumor Josh Sweat wants a trade. Im not sure the Bears are still trying to upgrade the DE position. We signed Davenport, which could not add anything but was a cheap contract so why not check it out. We have Sweat-Booker-Dayo-Davenport. Add the emergence of Kromah and Lynch logging reps at DE. Now if an injury pops up (maybe Booker) then that could change. If we sign anyone else it wont be a big money contract. IMO. We signed another LB Antonio Greer, with the injury to Sewell. In 4 days they start making cuts, Greer is only here for the last game? Seemed odd to me.

Speaking of football, did everyone see the Bears’ Rivalry unis? The one they’ll wear during the Packers game on Christmas? I oscillate between liking them, then not. I see where they wanted to reach back to their roots (which to me is awesome) but something just seems…off.
