Where the Bears "rank"

I recently saw this article and became slightly irritated:

"Expert" rankings

I just don't see it.

I think the "experts" forget the following:

1) The Bears were in the Super Bowl year before last with essentially the same team

2) The Bears had a ton of defensive injuries during the year

3) The Bears had a bad offensive line last year

4) The Bears had Pro Bowlers who were injured on each level of defense (Harris, Url, Brown)

5) The Bears lost the heart of the defense, Brown, on a freak accident

6) The Bears can't rely on Rex Grossman every game, but he sure has blown it up in some games...and Orton definitely has skills

7) The Bears had a ton of bad breaks in close games last year

8) The Bears have gotten stronger via the draft in just about every lacking position

9) The Bears have players coming off of the forced "IR"/"Redshirt" program that should contribute (Dusty/Bazuin/Okwo)

10) The Bears have not even touched upon the potential of Hester, Olsen, Wolfe, Benson, Orton, or Bradley yet.

I really think the Bears are going to shock people this year. All the supposed experts will look dumb as hell if the Bears don't suffer through an injury-plagued year. I can easily see a 3 or 4 loss year. Call it koolaid if you want, but I really see a stockpile of talent and potential on this team.

I love this ranking. Please let the analysts pile on. I want the team with a chip on it's shoulder.

I like that only one guy had the Giants at 1 and the rest had them lower than 5th. Seriously, until San Diego does something the media needs to get off their jock. Talk about a team that is so hyped up every year and never does anything with it. They better hope LT doesnt get hurt this year with Turner gone.

I'd say it's all about the QB but that falls apart when you get to #9 Cleveland and #10 Green Bay. You can't possibly tell me Green Bay's QB situation is better than ours. Folks rail on Rex for being injury prone but what about Rogers?

Bill Williamson? An expert ranking the Bears 29th? They finished 7-9 with all those injuries and easily could've won 3-4 of those losses with a decimated defense. Some "experts" ad the Raiders ranked higher than the Bears, hilarious.

I just don't see it.

I

Before the 2007 season EVERYONE had us as winning the NFC North and most had us as 1 or 2 in the NFC. We were universally pre-ranked as being a top-10 team. PREDICTION WRONG!

Before the 2006 season, who picked the Bears to run away with the NFC? Most considered 2005 a fluke, and we were ranked in the teens. PREDICTION WRONG!

Before 2005, Dr. Z picked us to be the worst in the NFL. Most others just ranked us in the 20's. We finish as the #2 team in the NFC. PREDICTION WRONG!

Before 2004: Most thought we'd suck, and we REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY SUCKED! Prediction correct.

Talk is cheap. Words are plentiful. I love reading the predictions, but I'm not going to get pissed about them since 75% of the time they are wrong.

I don't think we're 25th... But I don't think we're much better than 18th. We look like a .500 team I think. Too much rests on a very suspect offense.

If you look at the trend of the league the past few years its quite a crap shoot. Unless you say the Pats and Colts are going to be good its almost impossible to figure who will be good next year. Would anyone be shocked if teams like us, the Saints or Philly has a good year? Would people be shocked if Cleveland went 6-10? What about if Arizona or Buffalo finally turned the corner. Playoff teams like Tennessee and Washington could finish last in their division an nobody would be shocked.

Your right DB, there is so much mediocrity amongst average teams. From one year to the next we see teams go from 5-11 to 9-7 and back. There are only a handful that are almost guaranteed to be there year in and year out.

The one thing that will be interesting to see is NE's "year after losing the Super Bowl" season. Everytime a team loses the big game, they bring up how bad they do the next year. So lets see if that theory holds true with them.

I don't mind the Bears being ranked that low if it lights a fire under the team. I think the pack and queens are ranked too high tho. The NFCN plays a pretty tough schedule this year and all four of the teams have question marks. I could see the division title being won at 8-8.

The Bears offense looks doomed to me. Angelo promised stability at the QB position. Instead, he made it even more unstable than it was last year by replacing Griese with a couple UDFAs who stand little chance of ever being good enough to play in the NFL.

Williams hopefully will be a stud, but JA didn't get an LG, and kept Garza at RG. The two guards are critical for a successful running game.

Hopefully the D will stay healthy this year, or the Bears will be picking in the top ten in the '09 draft.

I have a bad feeling about this season to be honest. Our offense is in shambles. We have no QB. We're relying on a rookie LT, a rookie RB, and a weak WR group behind a shaky, unproven offensive line. Our coaching staff isn't the brightest bunch. Our D-Line has questions in the middle and is riddled with injury issues. Urlacher is protesting his contract and also has back/neck issues. Our starting safety can't stay healthy for more than 3 games a season, and our best player is a kick/punt returner.

But...there's a reason we play all 16 games on the schedule.

Offense in shambles - true

no QB - not true. Both Grossman and Orton have shown talent when given time and the support of a running game

relying on a rookie LT - true, hopefully it doesn't kill the Bears

relying on a rookie RB - not true, Benson will probably get the majority of the carries

weak WR group - maybe. I think they have loads of potential, but...

unproven OL - true, I think this is what kills the rest of the offensive production

DL questions and injuries - true, unfortunately. Let's hope we have luck this year with the injuries

I don't know how much weaker than Moose/Berrian you can get. It is probably more of a wash with Booker/Bradley/Bennett.

The success of this season depends on the Oline. I think our QB and RB will be fine if our OLine plays beter than it did last year, and even the year we went to the Superbowl. We are counting on a rookie LT to make that much of an impact. I'm VERY cautiously optimistic, mostly because our defense is sick when healthy.

Im with you there. We have running back or widerecievers as of right now. Eventually you do have to score.
