I think you're totally right. He cant communicate directly with the Bears for sure. But he has apparently made generalized statements about what he needs in a team, and that apparently includes being in sync with the GM's contract. So the Bears would have to fire or extend Poles to land Johnson to fulfill that consideration. And that makes sense in general anyway. I think Poles was sound strategically, and his downfall was player evaluation. Here he had Ryan Bates, a player he'd long had his eye on, coming to start at center, Nate Davis, a player with excellent film at RG, a first round draft pick coming into his second year at RT, a talented player in Jenkins at LG, and another season out of Braxton Jones while Amagadje, a 3rd round pick works to take his spot. On paper, if all these players were what he thought they were, we were sound on the OL. The problem was that Bates never got healthy, Davis' attitude remained what it was said he was, Jenkins never got over the injury bug, Wright regressed with Morgan coaching him, Braxton cant handle a bull rush, and Amagadje was always hurt. Poles and his staff failed at player evaluation in each case, and now we have very little to build on on the OL. Even depth pieces like Pryor, Shelton and Curhan have been awful. When you look back at Claypool, Velus Jones, Pickens, and others, the pattern emerges: we are not good at player evaluation. Anyone would have known to pick Caleb - that was hardly a test of Poles. I'd like to fire Poles and bring in a good GM.

There are a thousand little things like this that make the difference between winning and losing. Being a head football coach is about a lot more than Xs and Os.

OK! Here's a purely optimistic scenario I probably don't believe in myself, but it COULD be true. With a large grain of salt... McCaskey sucks. That's why they hired Warren. Warren has been BIG 10 commissioner, and worked for the Vikings, knows a lot about football organizations, and has a lot of football contacts. People knew that McCaskey wasnt getting it done, so he got mostly fired and Warren was brought in to do a lot of what McCaskey used to do. When Warren got here, he gave Poles leeway and let him make moves. And Poles made bad choices, while Warren gathered power and influence. Now Warren is ready to start making his first moves. He deosnt deserve blame for what's happened, firing Poles will be his first actual move. And he knows coaches and knows exactly who the right coach should be. He agrees with you (whoever is reading this) and is going to bring in the exact coach you want. He's already working on putting an emphasis on the OL and the DL, and the next GM will too. The incoming coach knows this is a priority too. Together they will acquire 4 new starters on the OL and a top Edge rusher no one saw coming. As we shout "sell the team" the move was already made last year, and Warren is just about to make his first move - the first of many that he totally nails. Hey, it could happen.

LOL for sure. Caleb currently has the 5th best season for passing yards in Bears history. Which is amazing given all hes been through. 266 yards on sunday will put him at 4th best. 271 yards puts him at 3rd best. 2nd and 1st are both out of reach. Crazy! hey adam, this stat stuff is fun

I think NFL history is full of offensive and defensive guys who have failed, and some who have succeeded. Im not sure anyone can say that one side of the ball or the other is the key to predicting success as a HC. I fully understand that developing Caleb is a top priority, just as building a culture of accountability and discipline must also be a top priority. I see the genius (yeah Ill use that word!) of Johnson as an OC, but I have concerns about his as a HC leader. I see the toughness of Vrabel, and I know he will build a disciplined team, but i have concerns about who the OC will be. It's not easy to balance these needs. One thing I am sure of is that there is no easy answer, and support for either of these guys (and a few others) is understandable and makes sense. No one is stupid for wanting one or the other or Carroll or Gruden etc.

these are both good points. If we could find an offensive Vrabel, I'd be ALL for it. But if a candidate like that doesnt exist, I prefer leadership over schemes. Schemes are for coordinators anyway?

Oh, I have nothing but praise for Johnson's skills as an OC. The comment about shoop was just funny,a nd true, but it is obvious by what he's done that he is a superior OC. I do have questions about him as HC, but he is no John Shoop for sure. I mean, the video I posted was all about Johnson's offensive genius.

it's OK to disagree. I dont see it the way you do, it's all good. Also, the ball is following a ballistic path, so further down the field the ball wouldn't be as high, and after 12+ yards velocity doesn't need to be touch. With better coaching, and time, Caleb and Odunze should hopefully be more on the same page next year.

I have to disagree on that one, Odunze throttled down, to settle into the zone, but the zone was even wider if he had continued across and gained depth. Had Odunze been there, the ball would have been fine for a nice throw. Settling down into a zone isnt a bad thing, and continuing across and up is a great thing to do too. Caleb has to throw long before Odunze's final position can be known from what you see, with anticipation, so it's a matter of what the team is preaching, and what the anticipation rules are. Clearly, by Caleb showing "go deeper and across" with his hands to Odunze, Caleb was convinced that was the right answer. Maybe he was wrong, but usually it's what the QB wants that is the right answer? It's gonna be one of those things that is clearer in the all 22 film later in the week I think. I'm personally convinced that was on Odunze.

I think that was a case of Odunze not working up and across the field. Not on Caleb.
