For sure.  The emphasis on drafting players with good character increases the odds they will put the work in to make themselves successful.   It won't always work out as with Justin Fields but that gets countered with a starting LT from the 5th Rd.  For whatever his faults were Justin Fields didn't fail for lack of effort as we saw with Rex Grossman and Cade McNown.

    totally agree!

I dont  think we should downplay his potenial for being great just because he's a rookie. You were the one pushing ( the best prospect since Luck- Burrow).  I think It shows up fairly early in this year. We have a fairly easy schudule plenty of time to get his feet wet. The difference is his supporting cast.

I'm not! I haven't put any ceiling on Williams.

I'm just saying you like to see at least two years of consistent play before you want to pay such big money, The Packers had to do it based on a single inconsistent season, and we have more time to evaluate Williams before we have to pay him.

My point was more about timing, and how the Packers put themselves in a bind, not about Williams really at all.

The other reason was the scheme at Florida asked him to just stand up, read, then react.  It wasn't just 2-gap, they didn't want any type of attacking forward until the play was declared.  College football defenses are just odd these days, which is my way of saying most of them are boring to watch.

I totally get it. But it's kind of like saying Justin Fields is gonna be a great QB because he didnt have WRs or good protection. You can understand why Dexter didnt look like an active 3T, and you could look at his RAS scores and understand there was an athlete there, but without seeing it on film, you have to take a leap of faith that he will become an active 3T and that his personality will fit that quicker role too.

I guess Im just saying that if any scouting department could look at his RAS, and understand his 2 gap assignments in Florida that they could reasonably predict the player he has become, then he wouldnt have lasted until the 2nd round?

So yeah I agree, it wasnt out of the blue, there were reasons to believe, mitigating factors to understand, but it's also is a win for our scouting department and position coaches who identified him and brought him through this incredible transformation to where he is now.

Even the first half of last year it took time and training to speed up his reaction off the ball. And he did. Win for the Bears!

I believe he had a freak RAS score, it was a matter of working on his post snap movement. At Florida, he was a man eater tying up 2 players.  Here he is an attacker beating one man gaps.

yeah he always had a high RAS, but he was so slow off the snap - we know the reasons, 2 gap, playing weight etc, but still I give the staff credit for seeing what he could become thru what he was on film.

  5. To be fair, I dont know how consistent Caleb will be in the first half of this season either. He might have a similar trajectory, and finish the year strong with the lightbulb having fully turned on.

But I am glad we dont need to negotiate a $200M+ deal with Caleb for next year too. Thank god for rookie contracts.

Also, I have a prediction - I predict that in the next CBA teams will be able to declare only 60% (or a number close to that) of their single highest paid player's cap number against their cap so teams can compete in QB contracts without gutting the rest of the roster.

Or maybe you can just choose whichever single player's contract you want to get your 40% cap reduction on, but they have to be players you drafted yourself, having never been free agents.

    That would be pretty cool.

Alright, finally we can start moving out of the speculation phase of the football season and into reality with some film breakdown of our first day in pads.

First and foremost is that Dexter is first off the ball on many plays and trying to run a slide protection on him is not going to be easy this year as Darnell Wright found out.

amazing. it's one thing to see Dexter come up to speed with the rest, but to see him fastest off the ball after where he came from is truly remarkable. You gotta give Poles and the scouts props for seeing what he could become. Wow.

Because he sucked a** at the start of the season and only began to "shine" the second half of the season, he then blew away Dallas in the playoffs and returned to suck against SF.

So he was a Jekyll and Hyde QB last year.

ah! I thought maybe he had been injured and missed some games. Thank you!

Nothing like spending $220 Million on a guy that's inconsistent...

Not trying to fight, just present the opposite view of the outcome. As Pix suggested , i still think we would have taken a QB, I just think Poles would have Fields one more year to prove himself. Not suggesting they we would have given him a long term contract. His 5th year would actually have been cheaper than CW. I am totally sold on CW and feel fourtunate to have gotten him. I just dont think that cancels my wish for Fields to have a good future.

oh yeah, I wasnt saying you were fighting at all, I was saying Im trying not to be fighty myself about that previously touchy subject - youre fine!

Also, I think there might have been locker room issues if you keep beloved Fields around and try to give the rookie the reigns at some point, so you might wanna move him - but there are arguments on both sides that make some sense I agree.

I just think JF will never be a great QB. And since hes no longer here, it doesnt really matter LOL

  9. 56 minutes ago, Pixote said:

For sure, he would be traded, or cut, and not resigned. If kept, it would have been a stop gap. Maybe start games up until the trade deadline, then when the rookie was ready, trade him. Who knows, a team might have been desperate at that time if their starter went down and give us more than we got from Pittsburgh.

I cant really argue with that.

We will all see how Justin develops in Pittsburgh, but whatever the case, Caleb should make us forget all about it :)

  10. 24 minutes ago, Pixote said:

Depends. If we hadn't been in a position to draft Williams, would we have drafted a QB later that would be ready to start the first game of the season? If yes, I agree, they would have still traded Fields. If not, and the rookie QB had to sit for a spell, I suspect they would have kept Fields until the rookie was ready to start. As much as I like Baget, I don't think they would have turned the keys of the Offense over to him during that learning process.

interesting point. I guess I meant that I dont see Poles exercising the 5th year option, so we'd need to draft a QB, and youre right if the rookie needed to sit, maybe wed have kept JF - I guess i really specifically mean he wasnt the QB of our future, but youre right he might have still been on the roster.

But then again, teams start rookie QBs all the time these days, so maybe not too. But youre right I couldnt be sure, just that I dont think he was in our future plans.

  11. 32 minutes ago, Stinger226 said:

I think his biggest problem was consistency. He has did everything but had to many bumbs in the road. Everyone does realizes if we didnt get Panthers pick  he would still be here. If the Pathers pick didnt fall in the first 2 picks, Fields would have stayed.  I think he gets better. He will never be a top 10 QB but will fall in that next group. He looked great throwing 16 in a row but those type moments just didnt happen enough. IF he improves this year, he will be the starter in Pittsburgh. We get to see his growth from afar now as we watch CW become a top 5 QB as a rookie. I get the rookie growth period but I think he passes those mistakes early and has a redord type year.

well no reason to fight this all through again, but i dont believe he would still be here if we didnt have the Panthers pick. I think we would still have taken a QB and traded up if necessary, but we probably wouldnt have Caleb, and that would be awful.

We can agree to disagree on this, since the Justin Fields civil war is over LOL :)

And in a couple years we will have more data on this too of course.

It's difficult to believe (and painful to remember) that just two years ago before Poles began transforming the team, we were considered to have one of the worst roster of players in the league. We were laughed at, and unfortunately, rightfully so. What a difference with Poles as our GM!

before its over theres gonna be a Poles statue in front of Soldier Field.

And a Kevin Warren statue in front of the stadium in Arlington heights where we play LOL

  13. 25 minutes ago, ASHKUM BEAR said:

Then today, Caleb finds Velus Jones for a td.  It would be great if Caleb can elevate these two who have crazy speed and redeem Poles who saw something in them.

for sure, and DJ, Allen and Odunze too - its a lot easier to catch a long go route TD when the defense has to cover those other guys, than when their #1 or #2 CB is on you.

Yeah, it is unfortunate, because he had all the physical traits to become Cam 2.0. However, there is too much missing in his passing game to overcome in today's modern NFL offenses. Both the offenses and defenses are becoming so complex these days. There are plays within plays and QBs need to be able to process so much so fast that there is a clear demark point between the haves and have nots. Some guys just can't do it, like Fields. They can still be an NFL starter and win games, but rarely do those guys ever go on perennial playoff runs because their success is dependent on too many external variables. I would say any given year that no more than 10-15 QBs have "it" (Mahomes, Jackson, Burrow, Allen, Herbert, Prescott, Stafford, Rodgers) with the jury still out on Hurts, Stroud, Love, Tua, Lawrence, and Purdy. Caleb can easily enter the "jury still out" category this year and get into that group.

There are a group of vets like Goff, Cousins, Murray, and Mayfield that have it sometimes, just not consistently enough for me.

for sure. i will never denegrate Justins physical abilities. He throws a great deep ball, and hes one of the best open field runners in the league regardless of position. I have often compared him to Devin Hester in that regard.

I just dont think he is a QB.

  15. 2 hours ago, adam said:

Fields always had a nice deep ball. He is not having to read defenses, and there is no threat to get hit. Once that happens, his brain locks up. If it is his first read and he has time, he can make the pass. Everything else, including MoF throws, he struggles with.

I saw a video of a slant pass. No pass rushers, no LBs sitting, so it looks easy.

I wish him the best, but nothing says he has improved more than when we saw him last.

    agree 100%

I was watching the Green Bay game from last year yesterday and it was so maddening to see him hang on to the ball (again).

Justin is a hell of an athlete, but I just don't think he has what it takes to be a successful QB in the NFL.

Glad Williams is connecting with Scott early and developing that rapport, because they will have splash plays and then Scott will be what he is.  But those splash plays will be game changers putting points up and can help the Bears achieve that spot we know is reachable.

for sure, and if some defense manages by some miracle to be able to cover DJ, Keenan and Rome, then god knows what trash theyll have covering Scott LOL

I know its antiquated, but we could employ a run n shoot 4 wide single back offense and be pretty dangerous lol

I've been watching the press conferences the last few days.  It is still early but so far this offense with Caleb is definitely not the usual rookie QB show.  There is so much more offense to install and timing to get down but as near as I can tell from reporters on the scene he is not overwhelmed by any of this.  His professional approach appears to be winning over the locker room on both side of the ball.

Dexter just flat looks like a different man and is very mature in his approach to getting better.  Above all though was his confidence in himself as he spoke at the podium.  Dline depth will remain a concern until proven otherwise.

So far I like this new DC Eric Washington.  Simple straight talking man but I get the sense if he tells you someone or something is good he means it.  Otherwise he's going to talk about what needs to be worked on.  Seems like the kind of leader players respect as a man and not just as the coach.  Time will tell if he can get results.

yeah it's all very impressive, and not at all the norm for the Bears. This is a new era - the Poles era.

My son is not a fanactic football fan and didnt talk to  him about football. Someone came over to him for an autograph and he declined, saying he was here socially. He just had small  talk, but did do a shot with his wife. Said he was down to earth, funny guy. He didnt know who he was until someone told him. Someone you could have a beer with . No ego at all.  Because of his neighbors freindship with the security/ bar owner, was going to try to get tickets for a game. He has went before and its a VIP area where wives sit. We'll see.

Thanks for that. Im not surprised, because this is how he comes off in interviews and such, but it's great to have it confirmed firsthand away from cameras. Also it's just plain awesome that your son hung out with him. Thanks.

My son had dinner with D J Moore last night. His neighbor is friends with the owner of the bar- resturatant in Byron , il. The owner does security for the Bears and booked Zach Millers band ( former TE). He invited DJ 2 months ago but never thought he would show up because training camp started. He shows up and sits at the table my son was sitting at.

No one knew he was coming , tada, he shows up.

    yeah thats awesome!
Did he tell you anything about DJs attitude, was he nice (I assume so!)
did DJ say anything interesting about Caleb or anyone?

For sure, but you are also looking for positive signs within the culture that things are moving forward.

absolutely. Eberflus has his entire narrative in his own hands this season. If they do well, he could be looking at coach of the year. and if they falter, he could lose his job. Its SO unfair, because it really hinges on the players, but I expect Eberflus will come out of all of this looking very good.

I'm just saying if he does poorly this year (which i dont expect) then suddenly the past two years will look like a pattern, but if the team does well (which I DO expect) or VERY well (which would be awesome) then the past two years will be forgotten immediately, and he will be heralded as a league leading success.

But as to what I think is most likely, it's all positive.

I guess another way to say what Im saying is that if they do well, the past two years will evaporate from our collective memory.

Didnt the Detroit head coach make a couple blunders in the playoff game that cost them going to the championship game? His was coach of the year, the year before and no body was calling him out for it. Because he has a winning team. Good coachs screw up too.

yeah, Im just saying that he screwed up, and not to make excuses for it, not that he is doomed in the future because of it. Whatever happens this year will determine what i think of the guy, and that's all anyone ever has anyway.
