Happy we are sitting out our starters in this 'extra' preseason 'meaningless' game.

Yeah, it's not just the inherent risk of injury, because I am hoping Williams gets more snaps this year than Fields or Trubisky had. Im a big believer that you get ready to play football by playing football, and we have come out flat in game 1 too many times.

But this Hall of Fame game is after only a short amount of camp and players are not dialed in yet to what theyre supposed to be doing. The OL is still shifting around, and hasnt had enough time together yet. That all increases the likelihood of injury for sure, so I'm glad they are sitting this one out too.

I do hope the starters get a lot of preseason snaps going forward though.

I think that assessment is correct.  Poles wanted to hedge his bet to make sure Williams had good WRs.  Justin’s failure was not on him per se but if Williams fails so will he.  Allen for a 4th was good value in that context even for a one year rental.

yup, but for the same reasons youre right that we still need an OL

Lloyd Cushenberry and Andre James come to mind.  You say fourth rounder, I say 23 million salary.  Don't get me wrong, I love that he got Allen.  What I will argue is that a good center would be more valuable for Williams' overall development.  Problem is, we should have had both.  Poles hates to over pay.  I simply don't think it would have hurt in this situation.

My whole point is what we've seen in the past.  We get Cutler and we complain that had no weapons, we get weapons, then he gets killed because of JMarcus Webb.  And so on and so on for Trubisky and Fields.

I think your point is correct. I think that if free agency happened after the draft, we'd have possibly skipped Allen in favor of OL.

I think things happened the way they did because we didnt know we would get Odunze at #9 when free agency happened, and we NEEDED to make sure Caleb Williams had weapons.

But yes, a stout OL is worth more than a 3rd great WR to this team at this point, things just didnt work out that way. Hopefully the OL comes along either with guys we have, or more additions.

    And a DE :)

There are tons of Bear media now and everytime there is a disgrunted player, they jump on. Old, pre-injuried and looking for a 30 mil contract is not what Poles looks for. He acquires players with an eye to the future, that was Sweat. Only cheap add ons are coming if at all.

I agree he is not likely to pay big long term money to aging players, but you cant say we wont make another big signing if the right younger player is available in a trade etc.

You also cant discount a short term deal for a player like this either.

From the Giants Hard Knocks stuff, it looks like Poles primary target in the draft after Caleb was Alt, but once he was drafted, it was Rome. Honestly, I think if Rome was drafted, that Poles would've traded down and then taken an OT.

My assumption is he goes OL and DL with the first 3 picks next year (1st and 2x 2nds).

I dunno. I think from the 1920 Bears Drive show they wanted Odunze the whole time, and were looking to trade up with the Giants for him.

And I was arguing that an OT was on the table too, but from their own mouths, they had Odunze as their #2 player!

I couldn't disagree more with this statement.  I would've fixed the OL before giving up draft capital for Keenan Allen.  Revisionist history tells us that poor OL play ruins the entire offense.  The last thing we want is to have Caleb's development even slightly hindered by things not being solid up front.  I was pissed he didn't have it fixed last year for Justin, let alone now.  And I am on record, as PHX was with Caleb...

    fair point.

If Poles knew he was getting Odunze in the draft for sure, he probably wouldnt have signed Allen, but he had to make that decision first, and he had to be sure Caleb had targets.

You also have to factor in whether Poles thinks any OL free agents were studs far above who we signed.

But in the abstract, yes, the OL is a bigger problem than having a 3rd great WR, and if you could trade Allen straight up for a stronger OL right now, youd do it.

But the point remains that the OL sounds like it may be a problem, and that isnt good at all.

Glennon wasn’t the mistake.  Trubisky was.  Every GM has to field a full team every season and sometimes that forces bad short term decisions.   Or perhaps we should say difficult decisions.   You can add Lucas Patrick to that list so Poles isn’t  immune.

well said. That's how I see it too. Glennon was a short term move. The $ looks big, but we had it to spend that year. The real problem was the long term plan.

And Poles has Claypool too. And Velus Jones Jr. But once he got situated, and was making more long term moves, he seems to be making a lot of good choices.

He still needs to fix the OL tho it seems.

I was trying to give an example of Pace's bad decisions with money. !4 mil was absurd considering how bad he was. In his 10 year career he never made more than 2 mil.

he paid what the market would bear. Im not saying Pace was good at his job, but i dont think he made the mistake youre saying he made. Other teams were interested and the price was what it was - short term to fill in until the rookie was ready.

Also Glennon was coming off of his rookie deal, so this was his second contract, which is always a lot bigger if someone thinks he is a starter.

I just think people misunderstand what the Glennon strategy was. He was never going to be our long term starter, and a stop gap QB still costs a fortune if they are coming off a rookie deal and this is their first chance to test the market.

Was Glennon good? Nope. He wasnt. We agree about that. Was he worth the money long term? No again, we also agree, but was he worth the money for a short term until the rookie was ready? That was the move.

  9. I think Mike Glennon was a matter of wanting a vet QB until the rookie was ready, and the price for a vet QB is just high. I dont think they thought Glennon was the future or anything, which is why it was a shorter deal. So I dont think you can use Glennon as a measuring stick for long range plans or anything like that?

The rest all makes sense to me tho.

Yeah my guess is he plays a half in each of the 2 preseason games he plays. Try to make sure he gets a 2 minute drill and maybe in one of games have him come out and play one drive in a 3rd quarter (maybe game 3).

I could see him playing in the last one too possibly - thats my only caveat, everything else is dead on, and you could be right about the last one too, Im just not sure.

For me part of it is - I don’t want Caleb playing against 2’s and 3’s. No benefit to Caleb and injury risk that some guy trying to make a name clobbers one of our starters just doesn’t add up.

This is me presuming Texans wouldn’t see any need to start 1s. If they were playing ones than I would be in.

My guess is Caleb just plays in game 2 and 3.

good point re: Texans not playing starters.

I wouldnt be shocked if Williams got a bunch of preseason snaps, but even so, this is a week early.

You also have to remember that this is just fluff—an extra preseason game. I suspect we will see some reps from starters in the following regular preseason matchups. It seems every other day, I read about a player on another team going down for the season with an injury. The last thing we need is to lose one of our key starters.

yeah this is preseason game #0, I think starters will get more reps this year than in years previous over games 1-3. But also, remember we do joint practices too, and so those have a lot of live, but scripted reps too.

I think things are just too new to put Caleb out there this week. You want to know you can protect him with the OL at least.

  13. And you get the long term value of the kind of "ESP" that develops when players play together for a long period of time, and get used to how each other is going to see things, and timing stuff etc.

Williams, DJ and Odunze into the foreseeable future. That's fantastic.

AZ54 is right about the injury gamble, but like Mongo says, all big contrasts are gambles, and this seems like a really good bet.

    Great news.

One truth doesn’t infer the other.  My take on it is that fixing the center position with the best option for Caleb is job one.  If bates wins it outright it’s his and Shelton backs up.   If Shelton wins then we’ve got a proven alternative at RG and we can open up that competition.   If it’s a wash between Bates and Shelton then we go into figuring who our top 5 are which again could mean competition at RG.    Fans are in a rush for answers but reality is we got an extra week of practice we should use that to our best advantage.

for sure, and if Davis is doubtful, then we look harder at Connor Williams too. We have options.

If he truly is being a turd, I would love to see them cut Davis. (But it's not cap friendly)  Keep him as a backup for this season, then cut him as late as possible next year.  That way it's as painful as possible.  Poles has shown his respect, in the way he dealt Fields.  It's time to show that he can be vengeful if a player steals from the team.

Yeah, I am running out of patience for Davis. He really does seem like a turd. I know he can play, but i gotta wonder if his heart is in it.

Hope our D shows up with some swagger and smacks their O in the mouth. My Pucker hate is ever-growing.

    a freakin men

I want to see them playing with urgency. you know how it looks in the playoffs when everyone is dialed in and giving everything? I wanna see some of that every week. Intensity and desire. Hopefully that's Eberflus' style and the team buys in.

  17. 3 hours ago, adam said:

If Dexter can be a threat from the inside at 3T, this is probably a 12-win team as the DLine was the biggest weakness. Right now from all reports, Sweat, Dexter, and Billings have been dominating and Booker looks legit.

Now they need to get the O-Line settled. The projected starting 5 have not played together yet.

yeah and we dont know if Davis is even in our future. Eberflus called him out this week.

I think any QB due a contract are going to be overpaid these days. It was just his turn. GB didnt have a choice and hoped it turns out a good idea. A lot of teams regretting choices these days.

for sure. QBs are being overpaid. But Green Bay has the option of drafting a new rookie too. No one puts a gun to your head to spend your cap on a guy thats good but not great.

Green Bay is obviously betting he is going to be great, but they dont know. And they dont know because they didnt have a regular rookie contract with him starting to find out. ANd maybe they will get lucky and Love will be great, or maybe they will wish theyd had more time to evaluate him before they had to make that decision.

For me, in this new world, Id keep drafting rookies until I had a stud, and then pay him. Im not gonna pay $55M a year for some 15th best QB, and it's not just the money - its also the fact that youre married to him now and cant get your rookie again for a few years. Or if you do, and he sits, you dont get enough evaluation time again and youre in the same spot.

Another way of saying you look for greatness, and you dont settle for less even if it means sucking for a few years. Thats what Poles has shown us too.
