LOL 100%
I'm sure it is everything Poles can do to be diplomatic while Warren tries to give him advice. I'd love to hear what he says to his wife when he gets home about the "expert" input he received from Warren. He will be relieved when the cameras in his office used by Hard Knocks are removed so he doesn't have to be careful not to show his reaction after Warren leaves. 😉
I couldnt agree more.

Offer him a veteran base salary with a one-million-dollar bonus per solo sack. That should put a fire under his butt.
it's a great idea, but capwise I think you have to put all the possible bonuses as likely to be earned, and they count against the cap for this year. If they arent earned, then I think the dollars roll over to next year. So an open ended bonus per sac, would take up an infinite amount of cap space.
In reality, you could have tiers, or a ceiling, but if the idea is that if he has 20 sacks, hed be paid like a top DE, then wed have to carry that top DE cap number for this year, so there is a limit to how rich it could get.
But we could certainly pay him $4M or $5M with another 3 or 4 in incentive like Stinger says.

Barring a trade for a top talent like a Trey Hendrickson or something, I think this is the most likely path.

However, his involvement in football ops is all show. Like I can't see him giving Poles any advice that would change Poles mind about a difficult decision.
agree 100% - wonder if he can help himself.

Warren, like a lot of top level Execs are basically worthless and just a figure head. Some of those positions are part of the bloat of corporations today. Like what is the ROI on his hire? How much more profit margin have the Bears brought in over Warren's salary directly related to his work?
If he can deliver a stadium deal, then he will bring in more $ for the Bears than anyone else in the organization. I respect him and his role as a negotiator and demi-politician.
I just think that expertise doesnt extend to interior design, and that shows his ego. Based on what ive seen so far, Im not a fan of the man, but if he does a good job in his lane and doesnt screw other things up, then ok -
Loved watching Caleb and Flus on Hard Knocks at the beginning of the episode this week - breaking down the play that started off looking like 1 high, and ended up being 2 deep man under - the one where Caleb scrambled up the middle, as a QB should against that defense.
It was great to see the competence. I shouldnt say I'm surprised by it from professionals, but many years we didnt really see it, so it was great to see.
Also great to hear Caleb say the game was easier than practice.
The bit about Poles being disciplined about not overpaying Judon, and that they paid a 4th rounder for Booker was good to hear. They seem to be ready to give the young guys some snaps to grow. Might be a little bumpy early, but pays dividends in the long run.
ANd lastly, hearing Kevin Warren decide what he personally thought was classier for box seating, rather than a survey or some kind of market driven answer makes it seem like hes a bit of an ego case. I used to see it in advertising a lot when a 50 year old male client was working on a product for 13 year girls, and they wanted classic rock "boomer" music. Dude, thats what YOU want, not necessarily what the market wants. These arent objective good and bad decisions here, thy are subjective and should be made from the point of view of the consumers!
I think he wants to be league commissioner one day. -
most Bears starters, including Caleb Williams, will sit out Thursday night according to a Bears announcement.

Do we think he'll play at all this coming weekend?
I could be wrong, but if i had to guess, id say no. He got his 44 snaps.

Halftime should be a no holds barred cage match between Poles and Nagy
-
yeah the new site is great.
When you first did the migration, I had a small glitch. For the first 12 hours, i wanted to trade Caleb for Mitch Trubisky, but then I rebooted, and everything's ok now. -

I wasn’t terribly impressed by Bagent last year. One good preseason game paired with one bad game hasn’t really changed my mind. I think he's a viable QB2 in the league and that’s about it.
Hes not a top starter thats for sure. I think when we look at the bottom, say 6 starting QBs int he league, Bagent might be better. He doesnt have the flash, but he would probably win some games. In other words, I agree with you that hes a really good QB2, and not really a long term starter.
That said, in a league where teams are starving for QBs, maybe someone would trade for him? Some teams like the Giants, are just not that smart in their front offices. -
I think when you have young or underdeveloped players, you need to see them flashing against the 2nd string as their first test. If they arent gobbling up their inferiors, then you know they arent ready. So on one hand, yes you cant draw a straight line from production against the 2s to assuming similar production against the 1s, but you can see dominance against the 2s as a sign they are ready to play against the big boys. Will they dominate similarly? Thats what we cant know until we see it.

The Bears may end up flipping him in a few years like Matt Flynn to SEA. I hope they don't because he has already shown he can be a solid NFL QB.
Ive been wondering if thats not why we are being so proactive about competition for QB3

Gardner Minshew has turned that style into a decent career as a bridge QB/backup.
oh yes, Bagent is one of the best backups in the league already. He can actually win games.

After listening to hiIs post-game press conference I'd say he agrees there is much to work on. I've watched a couple film sessions on him (Chase Daniels, and part-way through JT's) and so far it feels more like Caleb was trying to force the ball to a few players. Maybe he was guilty of trying to get everyone involved because there were just a few big throws the previous game? He's got three weeks to settle in. Hopefully the offensive starters get one series in the next preseason game. I think he needs that to calm down.
yeah i really think thats all it is - trying to do too much. He is a competitor, and that spirit is going to serve him well.

While I see room for growth, I also see that the game is not too big for him. It seems as though he manipulates vs being manipulated. It is the same thing Mahommes and Rodgers do. It's cool collected calculated and simply cold. This is my playground type of mentality and I love it. I'm looking for rhythm just like everyone else, but the WTF stuff is there, in a good way...
totally. he is already moving defenders with his eyes. He is "pro ready"
I think it will be a comfort thing with him. I felt like he was pressing at the beginning of the Bengals game. Playing ahead of rhythm (new to see in Chicago) and that as he settles in hes going to be even more dangerous.
Bagent doesnt have the arm strength, off platform ability, improvisational stuff, but he sure does play in rhythm. He looked so relaxed out there, like the game was slow for him.
If Caleb is here now, imagine when he has 5 games under his belt.
Also, he's going to have bad days. So Im looking forward to being here for Chapter 1 of the Caleb Williams saga, and watching him develop. -

What I saw in yesterday's game was a QB that went through his reads, stayed in the pocket and delivered when he could, ran out of trouble when he didn't have time and did not run into sacks. I saw a lot of potential and I'm hyped that we have a legit QB for the first time in a very long time.
totally agree. I think Caleb is "on schedule" for greatness. Im just saying, there are areas he will grow in. Im not part of the narrative that says he cant do that, I just think, like any rookie, there is room for improvement in his in-structure QBing. I guess, Im also saying his off schedule is already as good as anyone's, so it's the in-pocket stuff to expect growth.
I think he is going to be a major hero for us and the entire league. -

Williams talent on broken plays is good but he's supposed to be the one who can play on time. Let's hope as the coaches pull back on the playbook for the start of the season and he gains more reps that starts to show up.
For sure. THe creative stuff is necessary and will win games for us, but when Caleb can operate in rhythm in the pocket, then it's gonna be hard to stop us.

...and yet I remember Pettis dropping some potential game winning passes in recent years. None of that means I choose Velus over Pettis either. I just don't see a difference on drops. Pettis is better at catching punts.
I feel like VJJ drops more, but youre not wrong. Pettis is no one's WR1
-
I like Pettis over Velus.
Pettis is very fast, but not quite as fast as VJJ.
VJJ is 6' Pettis is 6' 1"
Pettis plays football LOL -

Tyson Bagent for QB! Glad to see him playing in rythem and hitting wrs in step. Two TDs, he's gonna be the preseason leading QB when it's all wrapped up
when CW can add some of what TB can do, he will be unstoppable. TB cant add what CW does, but CW will mature.
TB sure does play well in rhythm - it looks like "football" -
one other thing, great tackling, swarming and hustle on defense across the game - points for Eberflus.

He did have one really bad throw when he had to scramble and didn't set his feet. He should get through the jitters. Almost need to see him next week for 1 or 2 series so he can get the feel down.
I agree. Williams needs reps.

Got his first TD, Fielderman style
lol yes, except he waited and looked for a throw for a while there, he didnt just tuck and run. I really like how Williams runs around but stays a passer!

Take it back! ??
hahaha, Ok well he made some A+ throws, but gets a D for consistency?
I feel like he was just trying too hard early - pressing, ahead of the tempo. And he was kind of overly emotional later too. It's good that he cares, he is a great competitor, but he will need to be a little more relaxed and let the game come to him. It's not a bad problem to have, and Im sure he will get it dialed in in time. He wants it SO bad.
And I agree with poles when he gave the coahing staff credit for adjusting and leaving Caleb in there. It was not the fear based run to prevent defense too early kind of thinking we've seen before.
Lots to build on in this game, and lots to yell at the players in practice about too. Good.
The Chicago Bears are on the clock! OFFSEASON OPEN THREAD!

this is how it feels to me too. I also think he is making himself seen so he can make a play to be NFL commissioner.
