The truth is generational talent can be found anywhere in the draft.  If the label of “Generational Talent” goads anther GM under pressure to save his job and not the franchise then a brilliant mind will use that to his advantage and exploit it for a “generational haul” of draft capital!

How could anyone fault Poles if he were to do something like this? I mean when Bellichick traded back he was considered “genius”

I agree back.  Really like your suggestion and 'yes' it makes too much sense, especially if you see how well Belichick and the Pats were successful for so long in doing it.

While on the subject of "generational QBs" and the talk of the odds for #1 QBs winning a Super Bowl, I stumbled across an interesting stat/article regarding the success rate of Heisman Trophy winners in the NFL.

The article below I think is a bit older so I'm not sure how accurate it has been since Cam Newton was in the Super Bowl but anyways....in the history of 58 Super Bowls, only 18 players who have won the Heisman have made it to the Super  Bowl.  Of those 18 players, 7 were QBs; Cam Newton (2016), Matt Leinart (2009), Chris Weinke (2004), Jim Plunkett (1981 and 1984), Roger Staubach (1971, '72, '78 and '79), John Huarte (1969) and Paul Hornung (1967).  Of those 7 only three actually played/started in a Super Bowl (Newton, Plunkett and Staubach).

So by that rationale, Williams and now Daniels have a little less luster for me.

Regarding Fields:  many people have said we can't keep him on the roster due to the QB conflict on the locker room.  It's a big boy game and a big boy business. They all know how it goes.  If Poles approaches Justin and says, "nobody wanted to give up much for you in trade.  So, we are keeping you and drafting a QB at 1.  You will enter camp at number 1 and you will have the opportunity to win the job and show what you are made of".  If he balls out, he could make a case for us to keep him and trade the the rookie.  That's the wildest part of the scenario, with the Fields getting a big trade partner as more likely.  Win win Bears.  If Justin competes and fails, we have shown him the ultimate respect, by allowing him to fall on his sword.  At that point, Bears lose, because we get next to nothing in return for him.

I will co-sign on all of this...mostly.  The one part that I'm not as sure of IF Justin were to stay and IF he were to FALL ON HIS SWORD and fail while doing so, someone out there will think they can use him in some capacity (as a backup). Whether it be Sean Payton as a backup to whomever they draft and deploy him as a Taysom Hill type player (like when in NO) or Jim Harbaugh using him like his brother's QB in Baltimore, some coach will think they can salvage him.  Heck Buffalo liked Trubisky so much they brought him back for a second tour.

Meanwhile your idea has a lot of good stuff in it for sure. One of which is the locker room.  I have a strong suspicion a fair number of the players are in Justin's corner.  If he were to return as you suggested and not be able to beat out whatever QB they draft, most everyone would realize it and be better with the move.  Whereas if they wholesale release/trade Justin to another team and IF whomever they draft fails instead, not only would you have a mutiny you'd have a whole new reset soon thereafter (2025?) and back to square one we go.

With Keenan Allen and Mike Williams both on the block/potentially released later today, it is worth noting that the Bears WR coach was with Chargers working with those 2 for 3 years.

Funny you bring up Chargers players potentially on the chopping block.  Allegedly so too are Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa (below).  I was checking the status of Leonard Floyd and AJ Espensa given their familiarity with DC coach Armstrong, but Floyd signed with SF and Espensa re-signed with Buff.  (I tried what you suggested adam with Twitter and it didn’t work).

A report out there that Bears were the runner up for Gabe Davis - who signed with Jags

Saw the numbers on his deal, (allegedly) he was offered 3 years $39 million from both Chicago and Jax.  For perspective, recently departed Darnell Mooney was offered 3 years $30 million from Chicago.  But instead took 3 years $39 million to join Atlanta.

Yeah its funny, while visiting the islands the last week and a half, my daughter and her friend heard that Biles was also on the islands (they didn't know which one) but were insistent on finding her.  I told them (at the time) that she was married to a Packers fan, so I was less inclined to help.  If only it had been a week later....we might've had tried to get a selfie.  For me and them.  LOL.

Now that Hunter is out of the picture (signed with Houston), how about DJ Wonnum who also played along the Vikings Defensive Front?  He finished out his rookie contract (4th year) with Minnesota last year and racked up 8 sacks while doing so.  He's scheduled to visit with Chicago on Thursday (after visiting Carolina on Wednesday).

No team has ever won two superbowls with anything less than a top 2 QB.

I have questions.  When you say "top 2 QB" do you mean before or after they are drafted?

Every now and then a lesser QB will sneak into a SB win, but only when one of the big names isnt in it.

Nick Foles (a third round selection) did it against Brady in 2018.

Yes I know I'm being a contrarian (again) but I'm genuinely interested in how you came about this.

  9. This is a good place as any "OPEN THREAD" to share this interesting nugget of information.  Saw it this morning flash on the screen (NFL Network?) while they were updating the current FA movement.  Seems crazy to think that newly acquired Jones has very similar stats to current 'Franchise QB' (and former overall #1 pick) Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.  I guess Lawrence has Jones soundly beat when it comes to rushing...but that's not what we want a QB to do...right?

The Bears just recently signed Colin Johnson, at 6'6" 220, is he the HB?

Wasn’t he on the team last year and more on a ‘test drive’ basis?  Think he scored a TD in one of the games late in the season.  In looking at him he’s listed as a WR not TE.  🤷🏻‍♂️

Big contract failure will doom a GM quicker than drafting the wrong first pick!

Unless you’re John Lynch and you make up for it by going to the SB with ‘Mr Irrelevant.’

If Bears had a 2nd round pick - I would think it would be a legit option.  But they don't. So unless Bengals will trade Tee HIggins to move up to 9 (and Bears get their pick - which I think is like 16th).  Bears basically move down 7 spots but pick up and pay a wideout big money ($25M per year) to pair with Moore.  Still have a FRP which they probably use on defense or oline (or maybe they move down a few more spots again and grab a center). Say move down to 23 or 24 - pick up a late 2nd / early 3rd - grab an olinemen or linemen with FRP and than draft a wideout with the other pick and than use our own draft pick on another olinemen (maybe someone we think could develop into an interio player).

Yeah I actually just read an article explaining a bit more about the complexity of Higgins' situation and right away realized 'never mind'.  They said Cincy had a nearly identical situation come up with former Safety Jessie Bates a few years ago and even though Bates wanted out he was tagged and ended up playing for the Bengals for another year.  The article also mentioned that Bates and Higgins both have the same agent.

They needed another TE and this is a good depth move. I hope he can still be as productive as he has been cause he's been pretty solid.  I think at this point - you can take Brockers off the list. I get he is a special talent - but unless they have him down as one of best TE's ever I don't think Bears are picking him at 9 (vs. a wideout, top dline, OT, or a trade down).

Maybe not Brockers but another potentially productive TE vs one who only blocks.  From what I've read Waldron's style offense deploys a lot of 2 and 3 TE sets.  In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see Blasingame gone (if he isn't already) as Waldron will line up TEs in the FB role from time to time.  Anyhow, having Everett on the team will help with the familiarity and Kmet with his potential production ability.  He still would need another TE that is capable of blocking and receiving.  Could they choose to keep Lewis around?  My guess is no and might want to draft a  younger version of him.

The Bears are sending a large group to Oregon Ducks pro day.  QB Bo Nix and C Jackson Powers-Johnson are going the big draws.

Bo Nix is one of the dark horse picks for me at QB.  Hope they like what they see.

The media created all of this nonsense,

Going back again to the reasoning we heard why Cliff Stein was fired was because of the concern of ‘watertight integrity’ (a Navy term from back in the day) at Halas Hall.  Warren made it clear he wanted nothing to leak out and allegedly Stein had been involved with something that violated that trust.  To let someone go who had as much time invested in the team was a pretty strong message.

As far as the media is concerned, I was going to bring this up after Diana Russini ended up getting egg on her face yesterday.   Today’s ‘journalist’ is nothing like those from when many of us were growing up.  Too many are concerned with getting “clicks” and sometimes the monetization that goes with it.  Many, especially in the sports world, want to be the first to get the scoop at nearly any cost.  What we’ve been reading and witnessing these last few months about Chicago and Justin is evidence of that.

Whereas, many of us who see some positive traits in Fields, play, would probably rate him between 4 and 6. Not good enough to be a francise savior, but not garbage.

Excellent work Pix…once again. I’d say I’m in the camp that JF is more closer to 6+ and just needs a real OC (maybe Waldron is it?) and more pieces to be successful.  And in using your scale I’d say Williams is N/A or TBD because he has yet to play an NFL down.  Is that to say he can’t be ‘all that’?  No.  But I’m not dismissive of the idea to select another QB that could provide competition to JF.

In fact, in my ‘Waldron deep dive’ I’ve found his style offense could work with either a rookie QB as well as a beat up veteran like Geno Smith.
