This the lonk with Brian Burns 5th yr option. There is a drop box that yo go to to choose, cut or trade. https://overthecap.com/player/brian-burns/7807
-
I am looking at Over The Cap website and states if he is traded you have no cap hit, if you cut him you eat it all.
-
Even if you trade him after picking up his 5th year option next yr. , you dont have to worry about eating his salary, it goes with the trade. The money is not a restriction.
-
No one is disagreeing with that, yes its guaranteed, but if you trade him the salary goes to the team he's traded to. Look at any 2022 contract of a player that is playing on a 5th yr option in 2023., if traded, you are not paying his salary. ( Over The Cap website.
-
To clear the point on the 5th year option, I just talked to Greg Gabriel on X, according to him, the 5th year option is guaranteed but it is his salary for that year and not a bonus, so if you trade Justin, you are not responsible for his salary unless you agree to pay it in a trade. Why would we do that?
-
Im not going down any road I just stated you can call me a moron whle using nice words and I'm not blowing up. Not sure why that triggers you, you choose to address my opinion in a negative way. I'm saying that is the proper way to do.
-
What I do think is that you think you're right and no other opinion means anything. If we win out, make the playoffs and Fields balls out , you will still have your opinion and that's ok.. I totally get what you're saying, I dont agree with it, OBVIOUSLY. This is not a contest, Poles may very well take Williams and the history of the Bears may win 2 SBs , ect. You just cant dismiss other options because you disagree. Everyone on here understands your points, not just me but other people disagree with you also. Its not me against you, its just opinions.
-
The salary cap is definitely something to keep in mind but like you said other teams seem to manage, that IF that matters in 2026, I trust Poles to figure it out. That's not even saying I think Justin is even here then but for next year it just isnt something you focus on. If everyone thinks Williams is the guy, 3 21st round picks, a second now and in the future or some players back. I dont think he will even want to bring in another big contract (Crosby) but add someone with upside in his first couple of yrs on a rookie contract. NE, Kyle Duggar/S, Cole Strange/OG ( he played some snaps at OC in college. OR Cardinals- BJ Ojulari-Paris Johnson jr . all of those would be cheap contracts for several yrs. Falcons Drake London- Matt Bergron .

Prescott is playing well now but Dallas has struggled with the thought he is a Mahomes type and questioned paying him the last time they paid him and have to do it again. No one paid Daniel Jones, Russel Wilson and Kyle Murray thinking they are their Patrick Mahomes. People can think that they are good enough to win a SB (building the team around a QB) w/o thinking they got there because of the QB. Its calling winning with a QB not winning because of the QB. Here again I have to state I have never said ( IF you think you have a super Bowl QB then there is an argument for going all the way to that contract. If you think that QB makes the players around him better - throwing lesser receivers open etc.) Yes I am hoping for progress but Paying him 50 mil a year has nothing to do with having him being the QB in 2024 or and 2025. You think it is just one or the other, its not. That doesnt mean you cant draft a QB and still have Fields our QB in 2024 and or 2025. Its just gives Poles more time to evaluate Justin. KC drafted a QB and still won with Alex Smith and changed QBs the next year. Poles was in KC when that happened. Having the top pick in the draft doesnt mean you have to pick a QB with that pick. Many people think trading that pick can get us a 2023 draft type of trade haul that has given this team a huge lift in roster building. No one ever thought Mahomes would turn out to be who he is, Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Montana, Farve, Warner just pick a name. There might be that QB in this draft but I think trusting Williams to be that guy is a risk. Poles is in a better spot to decide that over our opinions. Here again I will state I trust Poles to figure that out and will be excited for whoever he thinks is our QB of the future even Fields. I think the most logical choice is to keep Fields for 2024 and still draft a prospect. He's not going to hold out or the newly drafted QB not play here because his feelings are hurt. I am not the only person that thinks the way I do, many former QBs think we should keep Fields and several fans polls that say 70% of fandom think we should run with Justin. 30% agree with you AND they are just opinions.

See you can play nice, (terrible naive thinking) is much better than, ignorant, moron, brain dead or whatever other words you used. He probably does know what he's going to do but for some reason, you think he totally has your opinion. I am throwing out the other options that you completely dismiss. You can bring back Justin without declaring ( top 5 SB QB). You can go into 2024 with the thought you are going to draft a QB and not get the guy you wanted and then pick up his option without thinking (top 5 SB QB). You can think that we can win with Justin not being a great QB, great D, good running game, upgrading the roster ( MHJ or Bowers, Turner or Latu). We seem to be doing that now. IF, a big IF, we win out and make the playoffs that will affect on Poles views the future. For some reason you keep putting words in my mouth. No where have I ever said Fields is a top 5 SB QB. I have said on many occasions that if Poles decides Williams is the guy, I have no problem with that but I will let him decide that not you. They can go forward with Poles picking up the option and still draft a QB in the 2025 draft. 25 mil is not a CAP KILLER. You have been right all along that Fields play, this year hasnt settled anything, but assuming any drafted QB option is a better choice than having Justin back is terrible naive thinking. My opinion all along has been bring back Fields and draft a QB to develop not in the first round and let him develop. There are several options and I never said your view is not a sound option, I just disagree that it is the only option.

There's no right or wrong answer when you've expressing opinions, everything is speculation. If your money answer is the right way to do things, why are QBs getting paid and teams not just drafting new QBs every 4 years? 12 QBs are making over 40 mil a year. Only one wins a SB every year. The best team in the league at this moment has a 7 th rounder starting for them right now. Those teams seem to be making the cap work. Dallas , Philly, Baltimore, KC, and Buf are all competing while paying their QB.
-
There is risk in any move you make, I think team building will add to whoever the QB is going forward. Poles will determine if a QB is worth taking, I keep going back to keep Fields and draft a QB, not in the first round. I'm not taking the risk that Williams is a bust or Field's blossoms, I'm allowing for both options. What ever move he makes, another option will be a QB in 2025. Banking in a trade that's gets us another first rounder with pick one. If Poles decides to take a QB and trade Fields, im behind that but at this point in time, nothing is clearly one or the other. Poles is building a team to compete now, not wait a couple of years to develop a rookie QB. Does he draft Young or Stroud? That's the real question, who is it? I think he will hedge his bet and keep Fields and draft a prospect not in the first round. That is the least risky move. Draft MHJ and Latu then Penix or Nix with the early 2 nd round pick. Or who he decides to grab. 4 games yet to play will add more insight in to that decision. If we win 3 or 4, this conversation probably will be a lot clearer to Poles.
-
Let me rephrase that IMO. The QB GOD Caleb Williams doesnt look like that to me but with any of 10 draftable QBs , one may emerge. I know Fields is not but which one is the magic carpet ride?
-
Seen several clips on X where it shows George Pickens not even trying to block on plays. One was a goal line play where a half assed block would have gotten Warren into the end zone. Anyone that wanted Pickens may be seeing him on the trade market this offseason. Now I understand why Poles didnt draft him.
-
Everyone cant always be compared to Mahomes, in that case no one would measure up. You are right this year doesnt settle anything. Poles will bring in another QB if he thinks he will be better. A rookie QB doesnt compare to Mahomes either, there is no Mahomes in this draft.
-
I didnt know that, i guess you just dont trade him or cut him for 2025.
-
You can bring back Mooney for cheap and still add a #2 in the draft. I think we will find out he has been nursing an injury along the way. He is a hard worker, a team guy and with DJ has probably lost some of his confidence.
-
Whoever Poles decides to go with, I trust him to make that decision. I agree money is a part of the recipe but that wouldnt happen until 2026. Poles is trying to make a winner and manage the future at the same time. Next year , your best option would be the upside of Fields over any rookie drafted. A rookie brings growing pains. The draftee will have a higher ceiling but not floor in 2024 and maybe 2025. Build the team ,draft a prospect and go start winning. KC did that the exact yr they drafted Mahomes, won with Smith and let Mahomes develop. Poles was there that yr and it worked out for KC and the future.
-
You can pickup his option and then if year 4 . a QB you drafted is doing well , you could trade him with the option money. Or after the 5th year you could tag him which would only be a 1 yr of a big payment. So you effectively have him for 3 yrs . Draft a QB prospect and you have 3 yrs to develop and still get any upside of Justin w/o making a big commitment. The great Pat Mahomes sat for a yr. Hurts barely played his first year. Herbert or Fields were not suppose to play their first yr but injuries changed that. Rodgers sat for several yrs but money has changed that now. So keep him, draft who ever you want, Fields will do well to get a big contract and you burn the candles at both ends. We can win in 2024, if you decide to pay Fields you still can. Trade the new drafted QB. Another possibility is look for a QB in 2025 to draft, when you trade pick one, you can fall into the same scenario like with Carolina. Chances are that team will have a top 5 pick in 2025. There is no urgency for a QB while Fields is still progressing and you can do it all over again in 2025.

Here is a nice article for people to use for arguing either way with the QB of the future. https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2023/12/15/24002218/chicago-bears-justin-fields-trade-pros-cons-caleb-williams-drake-maye-2024-nfl-offseason
