you are right it is a youth movement but you cant always fit the program with undrafted free agents to just fill a spot, sometimes you have to fit a position with a competent player, it is not a perfect plan. It one season you can never fill all weaknesses so you have some spare parts you have to use to get where you need to go. It will take 3 drafts to get most of our depth to be a competent team.

Peanut retired, there was no keeping him. Slausen didnt fit the blocking system even thou I did not like to see him go. Forte is on the downhill slide, you need to let go of the past and see what there are going to do here. The reason we are bringing older DBs in is because we have injuries and that is all that is out there. Some people on here just want to keep reliving the past. Peanut was my favorite Bear for many years but I understand why we let him go.In Carolina, he played but was injured. With age you have more susceptible to a bad body. Forte wanted a big paycheck and is on the downhill slide. I hope he does well but I suspect he will be pedestrian and hurt alot. It was time for him to go. Good teams dont pay old players they get rid of them the year before they fall off the cliff, not pay them to fall. I like everything this regime is doing trying to get better. People hang on to old heroes and for what? Last time I checked we have not been very good for a very long time. Lets look to the future.

The first team looked good, the subs not so much. Its progress

That is one of the pluses in this regime, they see what we see and keep turning the roster over until they get it right. The roster was in such bad shape when they took over, it will take one more draft class and FAgency to finally get to a competitive team. I wish it was different but that is the reality of todays Bears team.

my opinion of the Bears will not be based on this performance, better to know what you need to work on now than be disillusioned with a preseason win.

I like the fact we have a legit #2 QB
-
they will figure it out, how about Will Montgomery? at least as a backup

injures are a part of football, some more key than others, it does suck when we finally put people in place to develop and then one gets hurt. Not devastating but stunts our growth on the oline.

Who is your surprise player that steps up this season?
Stinger226 replied to ASHKUM BEAR's topic in Bearstalk
They will only keep two slot WRs, I suspect it will be Braveman and Royal, maybe Mariani fills one of the outside back up roles. -
The TE spot is going to be a problem so might as where figure the FB to cover the lack of in TE.
-
I agree that would be a good comparison.Never gave that a thought before.

Bennett had his best years in his career playing with Culter, and then screws him over. Anybody that wanted Bennett still here, this is why he had to go, its mememe

We have young players in place to do that job, age is the equalizer when all good players, he's done.

McPhee isnt going anywhere, it is just a matter of health. They will not let good players get away. They will just bring Floyd along slower, if Young and Houston play well and McPhee stays healthy.

Who is your surprise player that steps up this season?
Stinger226 replied to ASHKUM BEAR's topic in Bearstalk
This is a quite curious year for the offense, Fox will want to run, but the strength is in the passing game. With two studs wide outs, and Royal and Bravemen underneath, we could pick teams apart. -
If he stays healthy they pay him, if not we move on. I think the key to all of this is White shining and I think that will happen. AJ has not been much of a team player so he may not be a great fit going forward. Fox likes team players and he is all about himself. So a lot will be answered after this year. If Royal can stay healthy this year, he will have a very good year similar to two years ago. I think if Braveman shows anything this will be Royals last year, the desire to be younger will continue.
-
I think they are preparing for Whitehair and Grassu to not quite being ready and are hedging those choices. It never hurts to have good depth, something we didnt have last year.

One of my favorite Bears, glad I got to watch him with a long career. Thank you Charles.

Who is your surprise player that steps up this season?
Stinger226 replied to ASHKUM BEAR's topic in Bearstalk
I think on offense Whitehair takes the job and runs with it. He will be consistent and make us realize why we drafted him. I think on defense Hicks becomes a stud. He is at a breakout point in his career and with the attention some of the bigger names we obtained in the off season he will shine. -
There is some smart coaches on this team, so I will trust until it proves otherwise.

BM is a very good player, but to long for him to be a Bear is short sighted. He is a problem child, as long as a team wins you put up with it, you start to lose and its me me me. The facts are , they did not let him go because they had a better choice, they moved on from him and went to the next choice. They are trying to find a winning solution to a football team short on quality players. He out of everybody they have released is the one that makes the most sense. History explains every decision , look at his career. He is on his forth team and HAS NEVER WON ANYTHING, he wears out his welcome, you will see evidence this year, something will screw up and he wont be there anymore.

We had Jeffery, Marshall and Bennett and didnt win everything. I trust that this regime knows what there doing and will let it play out. I dont care if we have 22 starting that we never heard of before, as long as Fox and Pace bring us a winning tradition, I dont care how they do it. I do not agree with everything there doing but am interested in finding out how it turns out. They are getting younger, they are actually drafting people that contribute. When they do a bad evaluation, they get rid of the player and bring the next one in to check out. I like how there going about it, the only one I have not agreed with so far is Slauson but if the OL is better, I drinking cool-aide.

Fox and Pace do not like his choices but cant do anything about it. What it does do is, if he stays healthy, we pay him. If he has lagging injury issues, his valve comes down, or they let him go with the new knowledge of White and the addition of Braveman can do for the passing game. Its a win win situation. We pay him if everything goes well and I dont think that will be a problem. Its the staying healthy issue that will show its face this year.

Trying to get Josh Hill would have been an attempt at finding one of our two TEs we would have used. It was as controllable a situation as getting Gresham. the only different was he choose not to come here where NO decided Hill should be keep. With the TEs they signed in FA keeping Hill was a marginal decision. They know the valve of the position , so they keep him.

We got any takers? He is 29 and has had success in the past. He could give us a starter upgrade at LT.
