Mason Foster signs with Bears

Featured Replies

Per Jen Leda on Twitter (and a congratulatory tweet from Jarvis Jenkins).

Aaron Leming @AaronLemingNFL 9m9 minutes ago #Bears GM Ryan Pace has had quite the day landing 5-techs Ray McDonald & Jarvis Jenkins and now finally reeling in ILB Mason Foster.

Good work today Ryan!

Supposedly not done yet according to Michael Wright. I'd bet it gets done though. Too much smoke for there not to be a fire.

EDIT- Michael C. Wright ‏@mikecwright 5m5 minutes ago

Agent says deal agreed to by Mason Foster to join Bears. @JenLada reported this earlier.

So yup, FINALLY a done deal.

Pace hasnt done anything to WOW us yet(im liking it), but he has added some nice pieces.... Hoping for a WOW draft!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do they have enough money to sign the OAK center????

Finally hitting the pavement and getting stuff done. Just waiting for the big money silliness to go away and now building the team from both ends. Jenkins just a backup, of which we dont have much of. McDonald is a big question mark, but a starter on the field. I would say Foster could be the starter at ILB and let the rest fall in place. good day

I actually much prefer the more meticulous process Pace has done vs. the spend spend spend approach Emery went with. Both have addressed needs but I think this value based approach gives us more upside and poses us to less long term risk and should allow us to put significant money into keeping internal players (this of course presumes he can draft and our staff can develop those keepers). Right now we have so few long-term pieces.

I think the team now has something like 43 linebackers signed on it. So there should be some nervous guys who wore numbers in the 50's on their backs last year.

get a 100 signed and let the best group win the roster spots.

I believe I read someone say we have enough money for about 6 vet min signings + 2 more long-term signings (at 3-4M per year). I presume if we do some structuring we could create some additional room as well.

We have to take out 6 mil for rookie pool, so this probably leaves us at around 5-6 mil leave in cap. Vet mins only count like 650 against the cap instead of the full amount.

I think the vet min signings are no cost on cap.

the top 51 contracts count against the cap, so many of them wont count.

Vet min deals count less against the cap. This is done as an incentive to keep the veterans around. So a vet min salary of $800 might only count something like $650k against the cap. I know the cap discount increases with the years the vet has in the league, of course the vet min salary also increases with the years in the league.

Mason Foster is a good signing. He's not going to be an elite player for us but should fill a role at ILB that we really needed to take care especially with a draft short on ILB talent. Reportedly Foster can call the plays as well so that takes something off the plate of Bostic who really needs to just focus on his job, whatever that ends up being.

I am glad this deal finally got done and he didn't stiff us for SD. This will be a solid addition with a lot of upside.

I just thought the vet minimum signings would cost little against the cap because they would essentially be pushing another minimum contract off the cap (when we cut the other guy without guarantees.

That's funny stuff, right there.

OLB: McPhee, McClellin,

ILB: Foster, Greene, Jones, Bostic

DE/LB?: Young, Houston, Allen

WTF is going to happen with that mess?
