Cliff Stein Doin' Work

Featured Replies

Draft picks Langford, Amos, and Fabuluje signed today.

Stein is amazing and should be promoted to team president relieving Ted Phillips.

I second that motion.

Meh. Every year we have this thread and every year I'm not very impressed.

Take it for granted, but this guy has kept the Bears out of cap hell for years. Whether it be getting draft picks signed before anyone else or allowing the gm to sign FAs, hes always left ways out. Stein is one if not the best in the business.

Amen.

If we can continually bash Phillips, I see no harm, only good, praising Stein.

Jeff Dickerson is saying the Bears expect to have deals in place with White and Goldman by Friday. I think that means only Grasu is without a contract by the end of the week unless they get him done too.

At least as far as the rookies go, I'm fairly certain they all have limits to what they can be signed to based on what slot their drafted in. Rookies have no real leverage in discussions. So ya, it doesn't really impress me. I'm more shocked every team doesn't get theirs signed right away as well.

That wasn't the case until after the CBA. It may not be impressive, but more impressive than the other 31 teams that go on vacation. It also helps that the Bears have a rookie camp this coming weekend and having them signed allows them to participate.

I wouldn't give Stein the credit, except for the fact that we operated this way even before the most recent CBA which for all intents and purposes put an end to rookie holdouts. It wasn't that long ago where you would consistently see top picks holding out and / or going down to the absolute wire. The new slotting system makes that go away but pre-slotting system Stein was as shrewd as it got and was always ahead of the 8 ball in terms of getting our guys signed and in camp.

Why not give the man credit for doing his job well? He's shown so for what now seems like over a decade.

I was just curious about what made Stein tick so I found this article. It's circa 2013 (don't hurt yourself thinking about a dark time not all that long ago) but his characteristics seem to hold true to this day. Being with the organization since 2007 (one of the longest tenured staff?) and a former agent shows he definitely has the 'know-how' for the job.

Thanks for sharing that!

It does matter because it means your rookies can come into rookie minicamp on a full contract as opposed to the "insurance policy" many teams have their rookies practice under. I've seen it here in AZ in recent years since the rookie slotting rules were setup and players were saying they'd be there but they weren't sure if they'd hit the weight room or how much they'd do on the field. I know there isn't much room to maneuver among the rookie salary slots but there is a little bit. By not penny-pinching and having our players signed and fully onboard before rookie mini-camp is a good thing for the morale of the new players IMO. Right now there are only two 1st Rd picks signed and I applaud Stein and our GM for getting this done early.

Exactly what I meant in my post. If we get them all signed, this rookie practice coming up will go smoother. If I recall, Will Sutton missed it for family vacation or something.

Didn't Kyle Long miss it because of Oregon's late graduation? I assume since the draft has been pushed back from when it used to be, that won't be an issue for Grasu.

That's awesome! And I give Stein tons of credit for the Bears having tons of cap space year after year. After the 2014 season, we extended Cutler, Marshall, signed Willie Young, Alan Houston, and Jared Allen to big contracts. We were able to spend freely and we're still 7 million under the cap.

That being said, with the rookie scale, what's the deal? Why does it take teams several months to sign their rookies? I believe with the #1 pick, there is an issue with a 5th option year. Kevin White accepted it, so in his 5th year, we can use it giving him the average of the top 25 WR's in the league. Otherwise, we'd have to franchise him and give him top 5 average salary.

In short, with the rookie scale, signing rookies ain't a big deal.

You are correct. Oregon has a different schedule. As many schools are doing finals this week, Oregons finals take place the second week of June. I dont think he will be signed until then, unless he can fly to Chicago on the weekend with his agent or if the Bears go to him. Sutton did miss a mandatory OTA which was excused by Trestman for a family "vacation" matters.

If it is not a big deal then why year after year are the Bears the first to get this done every year. What we need to hope for is that he is on the job for a long time and we can have this annual thread where it seems some of us don't remember Benson's holdout or Williams late signing under sweaty Teddy. When it comes to the offseason this is one of the things I like to not have to worry about since in another thread I was able to post all the dollars that was available for each pick at their draft position.

Agreed. It's nice not to have to worry about an element of the game such as this!
