BEARS 2012 Draft

I truly believe this is the year to address OL in the draft which will go along way in keeping the Bears competitive now and into the future without over spending in FA. In fact former GM - Bill Polian said today on the Doug Gottlieb show (ESPN Radio) that he would have never spent the $$$ on OG like the Tampa Bucks did for Carl Nicks, simply could not justify that money to that position.

Assuming a true LT is not available at 19, I would not be disappointed if we could DRAFT a LG and C that could come in and start from day one. Then in 2013 the Bears can move up in the 1st round if needed to get that stud LT if Williams and Webb can not hold down the fort this year ( :shakehead - this is me not holding my breath). I still think the Bears should bring Marcus McNeil in for a visit. If I am Emery I am restructuring players like Hester and Chris Williams so that they are paid more in line with their actual overall production but I am getting off track here.

Bottom Line is the best teams build through the draft starting in the trenches and going from there. Without a doubt the Bears have overly neglected the OL which has helped get Cutty clowned though his first few seasons (our franchise QB that we finally acquired via trade not draft- yes another stab at our former front office, they should have had the balls to move up in the draft for Cutler when he was a rookie). Furthermore this recklessness has in fact also shortened the window of opportunity for a legit run at the SB due to mismanaging the draft.

Look at the Packers for example: they have been committed over the years to keep their QB's clean,

2011 rd 1 pick 32 Derek Sherrod OT

2010 rd 1 pick 23 Brian Bulaga OT

2010 rd 5 pick 169 Marshall Newhouse OT

2009 rd 4 pick 109 TJ Lang OT/OG

2009 rd 5 pick 162 Jamon Meredith OT

2008 rd 4 pick 135 Josh Sitton OG

2008 rd 5 pick 150 Breno Giacomini OT

2007 rd 4 pick 119 Allan Barbre OG

2006 rd 2 pick 47 Daryn Colledge OG

2006 rd 3 pick 75 Jason Spitz OG

2006 rd 5 pick 165 Tony Moll OG

Yes, that is ELEVEN offensive lineman taken in the 5th round or earlier of the past 6 years! Obviously they had quite a few misses but the commitment is there.

Bears during this time: 8 offensive lineman: only TWO 1st rounders, ONE 4th rounder and FIVE 7th rounders and lone 6th rounder AND COUNTLESs undrafted free agents....Infact there were NO OL taken in 2005 or 2004 and one 7th rounder in 2003........no wonder we have problems keeping the QB upright !!! This is absolutely absurd!

2011 Carimi OT Round 1

2010 WEBB OT Round 7

2009 Louis OG Round 7

2008 Williams OT Round 1

2008 Adams OG Round 7

2008 Barton OT Round 7

2007 Beekman OG/C Round 4

2007 Brant OT Round 7

2006 Reed OG Round 6

I hope that Emery's plan is to address the OL in the draft early and often.

Challenge for you all:

I honestly do not have time to follow college football very closely and would be very interested to see which Offensive lineman some of you would target that would be available in the first 4 rounds? This could be a fun exercise.

It's time to keep Cutty Clean... and give him time to make plays![/b]

If they come out of the first with Martin or Adams,I'd be happy but I wouldn't be surprise if a defensive player was taken in the first(DT,DE or CB). If that happens Osemele and Sanders come into play.

I wouldn't be surprised either. Lovie has always, and always will, put his defense above his offense. His reputation as a defensive coach depends on it.

Another name to throw in the mix in the first round is Glenn/Geo. He can play both T and G and I have seen him listed as top 25 players in several draft info sites. We can try him at LG and if we have a problem with who is at LT we can give him a shot to do it there.

Agreed but at Senior Bowl practice he was clearly better inside than out in space.

It would be nice to just go BPA the first couple of rounds.

If they sign Wimbley they can afford to go BPA for the first couple rounds.

As it stands our defense does not work right without a great pass rush. Last year we ranked 29th in sacks, and we added nothing to the d-line so far.

For all the excitement of the Marshall trade, we've only added depth and special teams replacements in free agency. They really need to add another starter, whether that's DE, OG, OT or safety. Considering how critical pass rush is to our defense, my vote would be to add a DE.

How does that help the pass rush though? I know Lovie, in your opinion, always goes D over O, but seriously, Wootton and Idonije stink, so...? Getting a solid player opposite Peppers now and a guy who might be really good in 2-3 years is really important.

I'm starting to think Quinton Coples might be the first round pick. I know he's being picked to go higher, but his inconsistency could very well push him below Ingram and Mercilus near our range. I'm thinking we might see something like Coples in the 1st, Zebrie Sanders in the 2nd, and a guy like AJ Jenkins in the 3rd.

I would be ok with that group. I at least think you got the position right.

Getting a rookie DE who is known as a pass rush specialist helps the defense. At the very least it's another young, quick, high-motor body he can substitute into rotations and situational pass rush opportunities.

Wooten and Idonije may stink, but they smell like roses compared to Webb, Spencer, and E. Williams.

I don't want any OLineman on the Bears who does this. We already have Webb.

If the 2 OTs i mentioned are gone what do you take a OT reach or Glenn at OG(IMO).That is a reach at 19. That puts the other positions of need in play. Who do we have on the roster at DT? Who do we have on the roster at DE? Who do we have on the roster at CB?

DT.Melton,Paea,Toeaina and Jordon Miller

DE Izzy,Peppers,Wooten, Chauncey Davis and Thaddeus Gibson

CB Tillman,Jennings,DJ Moore and Donovan Warren

These are the players currently on the roster at these positions, so I believe they could use a new body at all 3 positions.

They need to take the BPA at our positions at need, that is the only way we get better. OL, DE, CB,WR in that order. We shouldnt reach for any position but if you have the 25th rated player like Glenn/OG there or the 28th rated player Mercilus/DE there that is a close call as to who pickup. I think someone we dont expect will drop down to our spot and will have a suprize name there.

We've seen it year after year and I have a feeling that its going to be a high rated prospect on the defensive side at other positions besides safety. Depending on who is talking the rankings for Poe ,Still,Worthy,Brockers and Cox have fluctuated tremendously since the Combine.

Ive posted my mock draft here before but, ive been up since 630 bored so i threw together a new one based on the walterfootball.com mock draft.

1. Whitney Mercilus DE Illini

I would Like to see them go DE 1st round, I think you'll get your best value at that position. Anybody playing opposite Peppers is gonna get single teamed so having a guy like Mercilus who had the most sacks in college last year (albeit he only had one year of great success) would be a great addition. Staying in IL and playing with veterans like Peppers and Izzy will on help the young man.

2. Kevin Zeitler G Wisconsin

I think he could step in and play RG right off the bat next to his former teammate Gabe Carimi. Their familiarity to each other should only help them, though it may not matter since I think Gabe was LT and Z was a RG, but still coming from the same college system should help them play well together on the right side.

3. Tommy Streeter WR The U

Debated going CB here (Minnifield or Hayword) but to satisfy Wesson I'll go with Streeter here, the 6'5" WR with "vines for arms". That'll give us 4 receivers 6'4" or taller BM 6'4", Streeter 6'5", Davis & Spaeth 6'7". If that doesnt scare other teams in the redzone idk what will.

4. Jamell Flemming CB OU

This mock has him making it to the 4th round and if he does make it there thats gotta be the pick.

5. Brandon Taylor S LSU or Audie Cole LB NC State

I think with Briggs and Urlacher to learn under you can wait another round on LB though im not opposed to going LB here.

Or go Hayword/Minnifield in the 3rd and McNutt in the 4th, Mcnutts another big (6'4") WR....I like Flemming though in the 4th

Man Im becoming obsessed with the Wisconsin OLs over here..If we go OL 1st and 2nd round like some have said in this thread I'd love for it to be Konz 1st and Zeitler 2nd. Williams-Garza-Konz-Zeitler-Carimi. I think havin 3 guys from the same Oline in college will benefit them all with their familiarity and itll maybe make them push each other.... I still like goin DE in the first but if Emery wants to address the OL the first 2 picks how cool would be if it were those 2....Talk about a comfort zone!

That would be excellent. Not only would it put the Wisconsin connection on the field together, it would have the one added benefit of moving Garza back to his better position (OG) like you've stated, and would also have the extra benefit of benching Webb, Louis, and E.Williams. OL of the future is set, Cutler gets to relax behind a solid OL, and the F.O. only has to worry about depth at that point. Behind that OL, Cutler would turn Marshall, Hester, Bennett, and Knox into a deadly WR corp.

I must be in minority because I liked Louis at RG. He didn't play well as RT (but a heck of a lot better than Omiyale) but after a rough start early in the season he was getting pretty good at RG before the switch. You have a detailed eye for Oline play so what is it you don't like about Louis at RG and why don't you think he'll improve there?

I've said numerous times that Louis was the best of the worst. By that I mean, he was average at best, but looked good because he's been in a unit with E.Williams, Webb, Spencer, Omiyale the past two years. I think he's got decent push at times, bad feet, and let's defenders get too far into his body on a regular basis. Better at run blocking than pass blocking, IMO. What I do like about him alot, however, is his tenacity and his aggressive behavior. On screens he almost always follows-up even if he's not leading the play. On loose balls he always hustles. And we all saw him chase down Cameron Wimbley in the Oakland game last year.

Louis > Omiyale at OT? Absolutely

Lous good at OT? No

Louis good at OG? No

Louis average with upside at OG? Yes

If the OL has Louis in is, I wouldn't be upset. But I would hope that means the Bears either drafted a first round LT, or moved Chris Williams to LT while drafting a first/second round OG or C (which would mean Garza moves back to OG).
