These are not players you will see drafted in the upper part of the draft. As I read more and more about prospects, this is my view on sleepers. Akem Spence/DT from Illinois- he is athletic, 72 tackles as a senior. a mid round pick that will eventually start in the league. Terry Hawthorne/CB from Illinois- good size, good speed 4.44, 60 tackles, 8 PBUs, 3 int.. I think another Illini prospect that will contribute and could start in a year or two. Gerald Hodges/LB from Penn state-The team leader played really well with 109 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, seven passes broken up, one forced fumble and two interceptions in 2012. So I know this is basically semantics nowadays and we are in sub-packages that take this away 60% of the time, but do you think we have the personnel to play the 3-4 more effectively than the 4-3? I can't tell if it is scheme, personnel, or the injuries, but we never have a consistent pass rush. Yeah we have had a few sacks, but it seems like we rarely have pressure outside of those plays that look more like coverage sacks. What do you think? Stick with Fangio and the 3-4 next year, or go back to a traditional set?

He was a DB and KR/PR, so it looks like they are happy with what they have at those positions (which is a good sign).

I'm still optimistic he's going to turn out to be a good player for us. I don't think that happens this year as he learns a new position. If he can still run well, and the offseason workout videos seem to show that he can, then special teams coverage could be his ticket to making the 53. Best case is he challenges Bullard for significant backup reps at DE. Or maybe that's the worst case because it means Bullard hasn't progressed as we hoped. If he sticks around, down the road I can see RRH in the LDE role when we are in a 4-man front. IMO converting RRH to this role has better odds of success than when we converted Cornelius Washington to 3-4 DE. That worked…

In total the ‘23 draft yielded 3 WR in DJ Moore, Chase Claypool, and Tyler Scott. Collectively that’s a pretty good haul for a single draft. I definitely believe Scott was best available when we took him. He hedges things a bit with resigning Mooney and to a lesser extent Claypool. With Scott on board it brought to mind a question about how would a team defend a 5 WR set. I include Velus in this not ESB because he is the better runner. I think Tremaine Edmunds is going to get cut soon. Whether we cut him or trade him, whether before or after June 1st, the result is the same. We will open up $15M in Salary Cap space. Of course I'd rather get something for him, even a 7th rounder, but if a team trades for him, they'll be on the hook for the $15M this year, and I don't see anyone paying him that much. It's possible if two (or more) teams want him AND can restructure him in a longer term deal to something more appropriate, then maybe we could get some value in trade, but I think it's much more likely that teams will just wait for us to cut him. I read on Profootballtalk.com that odds of Donta Whitner/FS/Buffalo staying on the team on slim. He was a 6th pick in the 2006 draft and havent lived up to expectations for the team. Could he revive his carrer as a Bear? I think it would be a low end risk to obtain him, and give it a shot. Offer them a 6th pick? They will problem just cut him anyways.
