The reviews and instant grades are coming in. For me this was an excellent weekend. For a draft that started late 3rd Rd we still picked up two players with 2nd Rd grades. Montgomery is a starter week 1. Ridley is a future WR2 starter. Shelley looks like at least a solid backup NB but has the potential to become a starter. Whyte has enough ability to develop into a 3rd RB after a year on the practice squad but may only find a niche as a special teams player. Denmark is just an athletic freak. I'm really curious to see how he handles the jump to the NFL but Pace saw enough not to take a chance on grabbing him as a UDFA. Then in UDFAs we added OG Bars…

Bears sign 22 UDFA's. I don't believe the Bears are the only team that does that at that great a number. Maybe it's time to create a UDFA league that is a non contact touch type league just to weed out the players. 99.9 percent of these players are never going to make an NFL roster. But there might be some who should but they just can't beat the number game. Then again maybe not.

It seems like this organization has had a player development deficit for quite some time. When has a player come into the organization and played better on the Bears than on a previous team (Akiem Hicks?). Of the recent acquisitions, the only player not to play worse on defense has been Billings. Edmunds, Edwards, Walker, Green, and Jones all seem worse this year. Tonyan has been bad, Davis with the obvious personal issues, but even Patrick has disappointed. I hate to give up picks, but Robby Anderson is said to be out there and could be had for a day 3 pick. If he could be had for a 5th would you do it? This would allow our day 2 picks to be shifted to OL/DL/CB.

When Cliff was running the contract negotiations and salary cap I always liked the fact we had our draft picks signed early. This is just 7 of 11 and i realize rookie salaries are tightly bracketed but this is still a good start. IIRC we also had better FA contracts that were more front-loaded and tended to give us more flexibility later in the deal. It was interesting to see that Jordan Howard has not played since the Bears game several weeks ago. Also, looking at his stats, he is actually on pace for less yards per game on the ground, less targets, receptions, and receiving yards than he had with the Bears. I was actually surprised to see this. Remember, one of the big storylines for him this offseason was how he was going to be more involved in the passing game in Philly, which just hasn't happened. He will more than likely end the season with career lows in rushing attempts, yards, Y/G, targets, receptions, and receiving yards.
