Maybe. That's what makes the second round more interesting than the first. A few perspectives: 1. Kiper has Borland ranked as the #25 player overall and projected to actually go to Washington at #34 2. The Hub Arkush magazine has him ranked as the #28 player overall 3. Walter-football has him projected to go to Miami at #50. 4. NFL draft countdown has him going #71 to Cleveland I'd hoped to draft Ryan Shazier who went to Houston. That left me debating between LB Borland, CB Roby, and OT Kouandjio as their 3 Washington's 3 greatest needs are LB, CB and O-line. That being said, I concede I don't know what the hell I'm doing and that I really don't give a damn about Washington

Cleveland, Stinger is on the clock with the 35th pick.

With the 34th pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the Washington football team selects Chris Borland, linebacker from the University of Wisconsin. Washington needs all kinds of help on defense, particularly at linebacker. When you are consistently trading away your top picks, that leaves you very little depth. Borland should be able to start immediately.

You're in the minority in writing Briggs off that soon. In his career, that's the first extended injury he has sustained. Before the injury (Detroit game?) he was easily the best defensive player on the team. Yes, Briggs looked terrible upon his return. I expect his spare tire to be gone and he will be back to his old self.

At the start of the 2015 season, Phil Emery would LOVE to see a starting linebacker trio of Bostic, Green, and Shea. That's not realistic and won't happen. But I think there's a decent chance that in another year, two of those 3 could have proven enough to start. That's why I don't think we will draft a linebacker in round #1. We have good veterans in front of them and we want to see more of what they can do.

Yeah this pretty much covers what we've been saying really. PFT did make one mistake saying, "They need to add a talented defensive tackle to add to the current rotation of Tracy Robertson, Stephen Paea, and Jay Ratliff . . . " I'm sitting here thinking "Who the hell is Tracy Robertson?" He's listed as a defensive end who was a rookie with Miami last season. He was cut at some point and played in one game with the Bears (week 12 vs. St. Louis) and recorded no stats. But I agree, when you look at weaknesses on other teams, comparitively, the Bears have promising options at all positions. I will disagree with you about the need for our linebacker position. We have a really nice mixture of really old guys who are good when healthy and motivated (DJ Williams and Lance Briggs) young players with promise that we've drafted in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th rounds in the past 2 years (Shea, Bostic, and Greene) and a veteran special teams ace is Jordan Senn. I don't see any of those guys not making that team.

With the 29th pick, in the 2014 draft, the New England Patriots select Stephon Tuitt. Defensive tackle from the University of Notre Dame. The Patriots could go o-line, cb, d-line, WR, TE. Of that group, D-line has the best selection with Stephon Tuitt, Timmy Jernigan, and Ra'shede ageman all available. Tuitt gets the edge here because of his athleticism and versatility. San Fran Jason is now on the clock at #30.

With the 25th pick, in the 2014 NFL draft, the San Diego Chargers select Kyle Fuller,CB Virginia Tech. The funny thing is with these mocks and rankings, I've seen Fuller going as high as #18 to the Jets, or dropping all the way to the 3rd round. Corner-back is by far the greatest need for the bolts. I checked, and the beat writers in San Diego are saying the team hopes he falls this far to them. I'll defer to their judgement. Cleveland (Stinger) is on the clock . . .

It does bring up a ton of questions. We know it was Lovie's decision to keep him at DE his rookie year. So why not the switch last year? I'd speculate it's because our defense was damn good going into last season. We wanted to take the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Shea did show promise as an off the edge pass rusher and had value on passing downs. Especially when you think about the 3 sack Packer game early in last season. That was before all our defensive tackles were hurt and we were forced to play Shea as an every down lineman. We saw the exact same thing with Mark Anderson. Heck, I'd speculate that if Henry Melton doesn't get injured last season, our d-line would have continued to be productive. Shea would have done well in a more limited role and he never gets moved to linebacker.

With the 23rd pick, in the 2014 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Marquis Lee, WR from the University of Southern California. Kansas City is pretty loaded by other their passing attack is pretty non-existent. Probably the greatest need and a good value pick. Cincinnati (MadLith) are on the clock . . . .

For what it's worth, here's Dan Pompei's explanation for Shea's spare tire via Twitter: "McClellin looked a little soft in a photo released by his trainer, but there were reasons why he looked that way. People familiar with the situation say McClellin had to eat a lot in order to keep his weight up so he could play the defensive end position. He needed some mass in order to be able to tangle with much larger offensive tackles, so he carried a bit of fat to stay at 263 pounds. After his position switch to linebacker, he is at 252, which is a better weight for him. The other issue is this: virtually every player in the NFL is in his worst shape of the year at the end of the season, when that picture was taken. Once training camp begins, players can't possibly work out the way they do in the offseason because their bodies usually are beat up, and they also have much less time and energy to devote to weight training and cardio. McClellin undoubtedly looked like a lot of other players who didn't have their photos all over Twitter."

With the 13th pick, in the 2014 NFL draft, the St. Louis Rams select Zack Martin. Offensive Tackle from the University of Notre Dame. This is a slight reach. But with Clowney surprisingly being available at #2, the Rams get their offensive tackle to help keep Sam Bradford upright. Eric Ebron was in consideration but went at #12. With this next pick, we will find out if we have to fire SCS mid-draft.

With the 9th pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the Buffalo Bills select Taylor Lewan, Offensive Tackle. Michigan. Detroit is on the clock.
-
Wow. I wouldn't have guessed that. Defense was Tommie Harris & Shea. Offense was Cedric, Olsen, Chris Williams, and Carimi. Good point. It's way past my bed time. If Mad Lith picks, I promise to have the Buffalo selection in by 5:30 am central tomorrow.

That's awesome!!! Try not to get injured wearing your Bear's gear!
-
I understand your frustration. But I'm not convinced it's all his fault. At their rookie training camp, he and Brandon Hardin were standing side by side. Hardin was taller and longer. Yet they are both listed at 6-3. Lance Briggs is listed at 6-1 243. He looks much wider and stockier than Shea. Shea's stature is closer to Chris Conte or Craig Steltz. Even fat, he was no where close to his listed weight of 260. He's built like a strong safety, small for a linebacker, yet we had him playing DE. He should have gotten on PED's and would have all been good. I look at it this way: Craig Steltz is listed at 6-1 210. What if we drafted him, told him to add 40 ponds and play DE? That's just stupid. Yet we did something similar with Shea.

I'd love it. But unless Mike Ditka is the GM, ain't no way San Fran gives up a 1,2,3,4 to move up 16 spots.
-
Lots of the mocks have Tampa Bay going WR or OT. They don't know Lovie. He's going defense. What say you Adam?
-
Yeah, but are either of them any damn good? More importantly, if you are that desperate for a quarterback, are you really that happy just taking the best QB available? You see Carr, Bridgewater and say, "meh . . . we'll take whomever is available and hopefully he pans out."
-

But you're ignoring my theory. And I concede it's just a theory. The knock on Shea was that he was too skinny to stop the run. Was he more concerned about adding pounds to make the team happy so that he could more adequately play DE? In summary, the team demanded he add pounds that his body was not necessarily equipped to handle. High-level athletes often struggle maintaining weight. So he went the other way and the result was the Michelen Man. In this article, Shea said he weighs 250. Does anyone believe he's 6-3 250??? No way in hell. I'd guess 230. Tops. The reason everyone thought it was a bad pick was because we thought the Bears drafted a linebacker to play defense end. These pictures seem to be more evidence that we drafted a linebacker to play DE. Now we are correcting the mistake. Why do you hope he gets cut? Shouldn't you be hoping he turns out to be the next middle linebacker for the Bears? And more importantly, a damn good middle linebacker? That's what I'm hoping for.

Who is throwing Watkins and Gordon the ball?
-
Damn good point! I've decided to say, "To hell with the relatives." My plan is to get in front of it and announce it now. I don't really like any of them and I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

That's a damn good pick for a team that pretty much needs everything. Houston is rumored to be thinking about taking Mack at #1.

Damnit. What the hell am I going to do? Each year I go to my wife's non-football watching ass-bag cousin's house at noon for Thanksgiving. Then I have to drive an hour to go to my ass-bag cousin's house. If I miss either, I will have multiple family members angry with me. My options: 1. Volunteer to host so I can ignore the family--that's difficult to maneuver since we'll be leaving . . . 2. Pretend to be sick . . . they'll never by it. Which leads us to, 3. Tell the family to go to hell. Hmm. Right now, option #3 is looking pretty damn good. Any suggestions?
