The problem with Shanahan is he really hasn't done anything since John Elway retired 20 years ago. His defense and special teams have been a mess. That being said, I'd be good with us hiring him, mainly because he's not an absolute boob.

I think you underestimate how unhappy Dallas fans were with Romo and that he received a big chunk of the blame for their failure. Maybe they weren't going to immediately dump Romo for Manziel, but they were certainly hoping to upgrade. Romo falls in that quarterback of QB's who fans love when their team is winning, and they absolutely hate when the team loses. I'd put Cutler in that category. Also, guys like Mathew Stafford, Phillip Rivers, Andy Dalton . . . when he's not winning Super Bowls, Eli Manning also falls here.

We really have the 10th most cap space? The media keeps making it out that we are in cap hell because of all the bad contracts. Considering that we have every offfensive starter signed, that's pretty damn impressive.
-
That plan sounds awesome. Imagine if Dallas had dumped their 100+ million $$ quarterback for Johnny Football? If we were re-focused on a running game, imagine how damn dangerous BM, AJ, and Martellus would be.
-
Aside from getting a big fat defensive tackle, in terms of personnel, how hard would it be for us to transform into a 3-4 D?
-
Yep. I'm good with the new regime deciding to dump Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall. But if they do that, they'd better make damn certain that it's the right call and that we cannot win with them. Statistically, Jay Cutler is by far the best QB in Bears history. In two more season, Brandon Marshall should be the best WR the Bears have ever had. In terms of the defense, we are in rebuilding mode and we can go in a number of different directions. Anyone coming in viewing the offense has to at least strongly consider that going with the talent we have may be the best course of action.

The only problem I see with us making a ton of moves, is aren't we really limited in terms of cap space? I know there is speculation about dumping Cutler and Marshall, but I believe that whomever we bring in will take a "wait and see" approach. With everybody signed, we could have the same offensive starting line-up at the start of the season that we had in 2014. On offense, we REALY need a #3 speed WR that can take the top off of a defense. Otherwise, the major changes will be on the defensive side of the ball where we draft a bunch of defensive players and fill in voids with veterans on the cheap.
-
Maybe. After how bad our offense was last year, I'm SHOCKED that Trestman is receiving so much interest as an OC. With all of our talent on that side of the ball, we finish 21st in yards and 23rd in points scored. I think that's telling of how desperate teams are to find competent offensive coordinators. It also makes me think we'd be better off hiring a head coach with an offensive back-ground.

I HATE the notion of rebuilding. I know it's a popular idea because of what the Cubs have done, but when has it ever consistently worked for an NFL team. I think of all the teams that seems to be in continuous rebuilding mode: Rams, Raiders, Browns, Bills . . . not to mention the Lions, who finally made the playoffs but were one and done. Meanwhile, the great franchises simply retool and reload. If we scrap next year, there is no guarantee that things will get better. I think of where the Cowboys were at a year ago at this time. There was talk they'd scrap their 100 million $$$ QB for Johnny Football. Everyone seemed to think they needed to rebuild. With good leadership, we can win next year.

Agreed. I'd love this hire. We are a veteran team that is still in "win-now" mode. We have to have a head-coach with experience. Not to mention, with most of our money and talent on the offensive side of the ball, I'f prefer a head-coach with an offensive back-ground to get the most our of them.
-
Agreed. Up until that article, all we've heard about is how professional he is and what a serious approach he takes. Part of it could him adjusting to practice intensity. Last year during practice he was pry going against Shea whom he could block with one hand while drinking a lemonade with the other.
-
How'd you push him over the edge? I just assumed that since our offensive line was good for the first time since the '80's, he had nothing to post about. (I'm excluding 2006 which was a damn good year for the 0-line.) Not only is our o-line looking good, but it should get even better. On that note, how weird is it that we have every offensive position locked in, not only for this year but hopefully also next year. The only starter not signed for next year is Roberto Garza, and it's not like we'll need to use the franchise tag on him if we decide to bring him back. That makes depth at our offensive positions far less meaningful.

Greene had one interception and he's mainly running with the 2nd team and working on special teams. As for Briggs, I know he'd love to play lights out, but can he do it at age 34? Either way, a mediocre Briggs is probably pretty good.
-
Damn good point. One helluva a point. Particularly if it travels and it may never be back in Chicago . . . that would be cool. My problem is that I'm at the tender age of 41. With a 7 year old and a 4 year old, going anywhere is damn near impossible. If it comes to Chicago, I might need to find a way.

Orton officially released from Dallas per PFT
bradjock replied to madlithuanian's topic in Bearstalk
I'd be good with it. The whole deal is weird with the Cowboys paying Orton huge money to be a backup and then bringing in Brandon Weedon. To me it's one of two things: 1) Orton wants a final chance to prove he can be a starter. He won't be that at Dallas and could have been bumped to #3. Or, 2) He really wants to retire If he's going to play, my guess is that he's going to one of half the teams in the league that has turmoil at the QB position. Houston anyone? Either way, I don't see him coming to the Bears. -
I don't know. A huge appeal of the draft is following the rumors, trades, projections, and fans bitching about what their team did. To me, sitting in a theater waiting for the name to be called . . . sucks.
-
Christian Jones looks really damn good. IMO, I don't see how he doesn't make the team. Assuming we have Briggs, SMC, DJ Williams, and either Greene/Senn. Barring injury, it's likely those are your six linebackers. We won't keep more than six. Don't get me wrong, it's a position with either young guys who haven't done a damn thing or guys who are too old to play. Briggs is slow. I'm more worried about having 3 guys who can play effectively than depth.
-
Yep. I was at camp today and I'd add this was not Jordan's fault at all. The ball was a bit low and maybe Josh Morgan slipped just a little. But it bounced off his hands/arms right to Fuller. That's on Morgan. I was hoping he could be a solid back-up but man he looked bad today. Kudos to Morgan for making a nice play on the ball.

I heard the entire interview and he was generally very positive about the Bears and seemed appreciative of the franchise. Saying good things about a former teammate does not equate to sour grapes. What's I don't get is that he is supposed to be a national NFL analyst, and he sounds like a retired football player who is just a casual fan. He had great things to say about Briggs, Tillman, Peppers, Hester . . . in other words, the guys he played with and he is close with. He even said, "Yeah, Peanut will just stop by my house sometimes." He didn't have much of an opinion on anybody he was not close with.
-
Any idea why he fell so far?
-
REAL nice move. Assuming Carey is going to be a part time return man, we've officially hit all our needs.
-
I'm surprised how short he is at 5-9.5 although he is a good receiver. Any experience as a return man?
-
Agreed completely. Hopefully it's a RB that can also serve as a return man.
-
Jernigan to Baltimore. Damn.
-
Do we take Jernigan despite the failed drug test? I say yes.
