cutler throws this ball from our own 45 to the packers 10. that's 40 yards in the air. jeffrey slows down to make the catch and has position on the defender. the ball drops right on target into his hands and he doesn't make the catch. i don't care if he had to come out of stride or not, that was a good + throw and the receivers responsibility to make that catch.. jeffrey makes that catch 99 times out of a hundred. the ball was there. marshall made nearly the same catch earlier in the game.

Bears in contract negotiations with Matt Slauson

have just heard on the score (jim miller) that our defensive players were possibly confused as to the type of coverage. also that the way it was set up they had jennings covering the freaking tight end while our safeties were covering the receiver. just one more log on the fire to FIRE tucker. what a joke. -

a freudian slip? hmmmmm..... no mention of mel tucker his DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR? i did NOT like the all-out blitz many have no problem with. although we had three sacks during this game we had nearly no pressure on him 98% of the time. he had all day to stand in the pocket prior to this play and to expect OUR safeties to cover green bays wide outs is ludicrous. our blitzes are telegraphed on nearly every occasion and to send everyone up the middle to clog up the center is poor scheming. if they wanted to blitz the moon why in the hell not send someone from the outside in and pinch rogers behind the middle of his offensive line where his vision is at least limited somewhat? it was such a mess in the middle with no heavy pressure that kuhn actually could chip peppers coming in off the corner and allow rogers the edge. these blitzes remind me of the babich/lovie blitzes of the past. NO imagination or concept how your opponent will react. -
long ball hail mary throws are high risk plays and only for a last chance in the last second of the game. we threw THREE. if we had worked it down the field (like we have seen in the past against us with ELEVEN seconds to lose under lovie) we certainly could have worked it downfield with the time we had left and the timeout. it would have given us a legitimate chance to run our offense with lower risk passing plays. to me this is trestmans baby. it's some stuff he needs to clean up this offseason along with his 4th down risks for no reason.

i have to agree. he has a 103.8 passer rating and people are unhappy with it?? cutler in my opinion had a very good game yesterday. in fact in the first half i believe cutler only threw a couple of bad balls. there were MULTIPLE drops by receivers that were at critical junctions for a first down. a fumble by jeffrey killed a drive in the last half of the 2nd quarter. or how about the TOP the first half? 18 minutes and 52 seconds!!! our defense cut out at least one series the bears could have been on the field by stopping nobody. it could have been miles worse without the int's in the redzone. let's talk about the play calling: why are we throwing the ball in the first series at all? the packers are decimated in the linebacker corp and are poor against the run. yet we pass the ball deep in our own territory without trying to run it? the last series is totally on trestman. that was one of the worst clock management and play calls i have witnessed. we had 1 timeout and about 30 seconds on the clock and we are on our own 40 yardline. what the hell is he thinking throwing hail mary passes? you work the freaking sideline and move the ball 10 to 15 yards a play to get you into position to actually have a realistic chance to win the game with your offense. in my opinion it was pitiful play calling.

to me he is a top candidate after being fired by minny today. phillips is my first, but frazier is right up at the top. he has made his bones in the nfl and proven himself as a DC. my biggest fear is we set a record for BAD and want to continue to run it with a DC who has NEVER done anything good in the NFL. this will be another strike against emery if he decides to keep tucker.
-
i believe it was a good to very good throw. this is the throws you expect from a qb with the big receivers we have. this is what we have been calling for all season. the ball dropped right into JEFFREY'S hands above the defender. he just dropped it.
-
seems light on cutlers contract. can't imagine he gets less than 10 million a year. other teams would pay that to him. if so great deal.

also heard they are sitting earl bennet? some strange end of season moves.

when i talk about bad i don't mean just bad, i mean historically bad. some of/the worst in NFL history and THE worst in chicago bear history. 2012 new orleans saints allowed more yards in one season than any team in NFL history. total yards 7042 passing yards - 4681 rushing - 2361 - 5.2 YPA steve spagnuolo DC - FIRED after one season of badness 1981 baltimore colts - mike mccormack - defensive minded head coach - FIRED after his 2nd season as HC. total yards - 6793 passing yards - 4128 rushing yards - 2665 - 4.4 YPA the chicago bears after 15 games with mel tucker as our defensive coordinator total yards after 15 games - 5840 passing yards - 3417 rushing yards - 2423 - 5.4 YPA ======================== worst run defenses 1960 forward DEFENSIVE RUSHING BADNESS 2013 chicago bears 2423 rushing yds - YPA 5.4 after 15 games. so far only the '61 vikings have a worse YPA record and this season isn't even over. modern era of professional footbal - 1960 forward 1961 vikings - 2667 yds 5.41 YPA - 14 game season 2006 colts - 2768 yds - 5.33 YPA - DC meeks with dungey NOT fired 1965 oilers (AFL) - 2683 - 5.29 YPA - 14 game season 2012 saints - 2361 yds - 5.2 YPA 2003 chiefs - 2344 yds - 5.17 YPA 1976 chiefs - 2344 yds - 5.17 YPA 2008 lions - 2754 yds - 5.14 YPA 1961 raiders - 2440 yds - 5.10 YPA 1973 patriots - 2850 yds - 5.09 YPA 1969 bengals - 2951 yds - 5.07 YPA 1960 cowboys - 2242 yds - 5.02 YPA - 14 game season 2011 bucs - 2497 yds - 5.0 YPA older era 1930's - 1959 1934 cincinnati reds - 6.40 YPA 1950 N.Y.Yanks - 5.63 YPA 1950 colts - 5.58 YPA 1959 redskins - 5.48 YPA ============= some of the worst pass defenses in NFL history 2011-12 Green Bay Packers: 4,796 Yards (15-1) 2011-12 New England Patriots: 4,704 Yards (13-3) 1995-96 Atlanta Falcons: 4,541 Yards, (9-7) 2005-06 San Francisco 49ers: 4,427 Yards (4-12) 1986-87 New York Jets: 4,389 Yards (10-6) 1981-82 San Diego Chargers: 4,311 Yards (10-6) 2010-11 Houston Texans: 4,280 Yards (6-10) 2013 chicago bears after 15 games - 3417 yds why would we even consider keeping tucker for any reason? he has no defensive scheme because all but one year he worked under defensive minded head coaches and ran theirs. the ONE year he ran his own defense with an offensive minded head coach and it was all on his shoulders as a DC (after THREE years in jacksonville) here is what he finished out with... 29th for points allowed and 30th for yards!! his coaching CEILING is the bottom 1/3 of the NFL and his bottom floor you need a steam shovel to keep digging to find it!! the jags had to be jumping for joy we offered him a contract.

i didn't explain it i guess very well in my post. mccnown to me is a key part of this puzzle if cutler goes. the difference with mccown in chicago for 2+ years if we let cutler go is we have an option to draft a qb at the slot we pick or POSSIBLY in a later round (i still would try to move up myself anyway). it gives us time for a project qb that can be groomed for a season or two behind mccown who equals someone who at least can play average ball at qb. without mccown for that time period, and we draft a project qb, we are basically screwed. our defense is in shambles and can't compensate for this training period. in fact we will have put our defense back a year by using our highest pick for a qb so if this happens we are in total rebuild mode with neither side of the ball playing at a high level.

i just don't see it. if you look at tuckers resume he has done nothing in the NFL to justify even the initial hire by emery let alone keep him. even with the injuries look at the rookies this guy has worked with on our team. in all truth they have not gotten ANY better and in my opinion have regressed from the start of the season. this tells a lot about his coaching abilities. if we are going to revamp this defense through the draft we need someone who can actually teach these rookies how to play in the NFL and tucker is not the guy to do it. in fact he hasn't even controlled the veterans we have on this team in regards to tackling and gap control. i know a lot of people talk about his abilities to run a 3-4 defense. it is far from the truth. in his first season as a DC he was an understudy of romeo crennel and that lasted one season before he was fired. it was crennel's defense, not something tucker was bringing to the table. and to be honest that defense was not very good... 2008 browns DC - with defensive minded coach romeo crennel the browns ran a 3-4 defense. this was the first year as a coordinator - overall rank for pts. = 16th; total yds given up = 26th; passing: ranked 14th for passing yds; 10th for passing td's allowed; net yards gained per pass attempt = 29th rushing: totaly yds = 28th; rushing td's = 21; yds per attempt = 25th if we don't get rid of tucker this misery will continue until we do and stunt our chances to win a superbowl by years.

in my opinion it does change everything. if mccown is not an option for the next 1-2 years we have 3 options even if cutler plays poorly next week... 1. we sign cutler anyway to a reasonable contract and if trestman is half of what everyone says he is he can clean up cutlers game next season. if he can't at least it buys us time. this gives us 3 years to look for his replacement. 2. we dump cutler and MAYBE mccown plays out 1 more year at a higher contract. if this happens we HAVE to waste a top pick on the QB position. where we are going to pick is HIGH RISK we find a franchise quarterback in that slot or even one that is serviceable. the only option i see in this scenario is we move *up drastically to pick a qb with high potential in the first. if mccown stays we have a 1 year window to make this guy able to play at a high level. if mccown leaves we are throwing this guy in the fire and hoping for the best with no credible backup. if we lose our picks on defense this year for a qb we are up against the wall for emery to bring in GOOD stop gap aging players. if we do this again we are up against the wall cap-wise. option 2 is rolling the dice for this franchise. if it does NOT work out with a high draft pick qb we have just sentenced ourselves to hell for at least 3-4 years with the same type of qb mutts we have fielded for nearly 30 years and no #1 pick next year. 3. we bring in a **journeyman qb in free agency and seriously GAMBLE this guy can play at a high level. if he can't even playout as average we end up with the same scenario as in #2. by this time our offense is aging and current contracts are up. we end up without marshall and probably forte and no serviceable qb. *we may not even HAVE enough to do this and if we do that will kill our 2nd and/or 3rd round pick and probably next years first to do it. ** to find a franchise quality qb not in his last season or two in the nfl is RARE. only angelo could have blown that scenario by not picking up brees.

try this link to nfl.com http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200000030...m-practice-reps i don't think it's set in stone but who knows. could be a ploy for our defense but then what would they need a ploy at all against OUR defense.

read this on the nfl.com website: well, that could change a lot of thoughts on where this franchise should go this offseason.

the great mel tucker and all of his accomplishments 2008 browns DC - with defensive minded coach romeo crennel the browns ran a 3-4 defense. this was the first year as a coordinator - overall rank for pts. = 16th; total yds given up = 26th; passing: ranked 14th for passing yds; 10th for passing td's allowed; net yards gained per pass attempt = 29th rushing: totaly yds = 28th; rushing td's = 21; yds per attempt = 25th 2009 jaguars DC - with del rio a defensive minded HC ran a 4-3. overall rank for pts = 24th; total yds given up = 23rd passing: ranked 26th for td's given up; ranked 27th in yds gained; ranked 30th for net yds gained per attempt rushing: total yds 19th; td's 14th; rushing yds per attempt 12th 2010 jags DC - pts allowed 27th; yds allowed 28th passing: ranked 28th yds allowed; ranked 26th for td's allowed rushing: ranked 22nd yds allowed; 29th for td's allowed 2011 jags DC and interim HC for last 5 games - pts allowed 11th; yds allowed ranked 6th passing: ranked 8th yds allowed; ranked 9th for td's rushing: ranked 9th yds allowed; ranked 20th for td's allowed 2012 jags DC assistant HC under an OFFENSIVE minded head coach (mularkey) - [[ ranked 29th for pts allowed ]] - [[ ranked 30th for yds allowed ]] passing: ranked 22nd yds allowed; ranked 12th for td's allowed rushing: ranked 30th for yds allowed; ranked 31st for td's allowed and we hired this guy WHY??? 2013 chicago bears DC after 15 games - ranked 30th for points allowed; ranked 29th for yds allowed passing: ranked 14 total yds; ranked 14th for td's allowed rushing: ranked 32 yds allowed; 31 for td's allowed we passed on rob ryan for this guy? and people want to give this guy another year to do exactly what??
-
this is the problem when you hire people with stipulations. if you hire someone i would think you like their body of work or what is the point in hiring them in the first place? if tucker was forced to accept the existing defensive scheme by emery then this is another huge gaff by emery to start with. why in the HELL would he do something like that when it had just been done to HIM? you just handcuffed a KEY guy you just paid a large salary to for no apparent reason. are we saying that the existing players on this team were specialized to play only one type of defense? that's ridiculous. as this season wore on and tucker couldn't see that it was going nowhere fast why didn't he try to change the defense to something that actually might work instead of pounding square pegs into round holes for an entire season? this smacks of utter incompetence by tucker to not realize this by game 8 and get with trestman and emery to fix it or at least limit the damage. we have wasted a complete year with a no-clue defense, taught our young players NOTHING and now it's possible they will give him another year to do whatever he 'supposedly' is good at? FIRE HIM NOW and get us someone with a clue how real defenses work like little bum or ryan and then build our defense through the draft and free agency.

I've been saying it all season but two people must go
Lucky Luciano replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
podlesh is one of the worst punters in the NFL. he wasn't good last season and is horrendous this year. we are losing field position every time he kicks. he needs to be GONE!! hester - GONE conte - would be a serviceable backup or special teams guy but not as a starter. in fact he has improved over the last 2 weeks. although he missed some important tackles last night he nearly made 3/4 of the tackles in the entire game as the failure of our DL and LB's were paramount. poor in red zone coverage but maybe serviceable in our future if he doesn't cost to much to keep. SMC - if we get another DC he stays through training camp. if a good coordinator can't make him drastically better... GONE DT peaua - GONE peppers - GONE major wright - GONE -
agree on emery so far. agree on trestman so far but he deserves to be there because he is head coach and HAS to be able to manipulate the DC and special teams coaches when they are failing. i still have a lot of respect for him and he surely doesn't deserve the boot but he needs to improve in that respect next season. decamillis - GONE tucker - VERY GONE
-
i agree, i misplaced kromer in that bunch. i changed it in the original post to show that.
-
his defense is a complete train wreck. i have never in my lifetime ever seen a bear defense this bad. it's historical. the wall of shame: tucker - i have given this guy a break all season because of the injury factor. no more!! i understand injuries can be a real cause for 'some' of the problems we are seeing but... by this time in the season NOBODY is a rookie anymore and to see these players game after game make the same mistakes and see no change or improvement is simply incredible.after 15 weeks of game play these players, rookies AND vets, still not having a clue how to play their position falls on the coaching staff and phil emery. either these defensive players have so little talent they couldn't make an arena league roster, which falls like a mountain on emery's shoulders, or this is the worst defensive coordinator and support staff ever to coach in the NFL. why he is still running this supposed cover 2 is mindboggling (exactly who decided to do this at the start of the season?). halfway through this season it called for SOME kind of change. to keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results is insanity. i would FIRE him at season end. NOBODY could be worse than what we have seen him do. emery - so far it would be no surprise to see a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round defensive pick be out of the nfl next season. that is batting '0' and on par with angelo's ineptitude and is huge. mcclellan - a first round pick that shows the abilities of a walk-on training-camp-fodder nobody. - why is he starting? bostic - a second round pick. i don't believe i have seen a worse linebacker start in the NFL he is playing like he has never played the game in his life. makes the same mistakes every single game and is a complete non-factor MLB. hardin - a third round pick. what a stretch by emery. an injured drafted safety that is out of the NFL. greene - a fourth round pick - could possibly be worse than bostic trestman - this mess falls on trestman's shoulders for not demanding some kind of change from tucker 8 games ago. does he get a pass for the season? yes, his offensive contribution keeps his job clearly safe. it's his first year in the NFL but the defense certainly is a black mark on his resume. he needs to be watched closely from now on and improve on all aspects. EDIT: i completely forgot about this guy... decamillis - to go from the best special teams in the NFL to this? he GONE!! =================== EDIT: i misplaced him in the wall of shame. i didn't intend for him to go there. a plus this season: kromer - i can't say much against this guy. a combo offensive coach working with trestman. has actually put together a decent offensive line. although... we need to see a great amount of improvement in our run blocking. we are not opening any holes in our interior line or getting any real push of the line of scrimmage. certainly a keeper at this time.

i gotta disagree. lovie is NOT more than an average defensive coach and a lot less than average, in fact POOR, head coach. with multiple all-pro/pro-bowl, and throw in a couple of probable HOF players, his defense was in my opinion just average against high octane offenses. except on rare occasions it was not geared to beat very good teams with upper tier passing attacks as he showed year after year. the soft zones were exploited time and again making poor QB's look like all-pro HOF candidates. he has no ability to adjust his defenses to what players he is forced to play. he relies on a system outdated by a decade and has no counter game plans to fall back on. he has to have turnovers to win which can work probably about 50% of the time and usually against lesser opponents. in big games when top tier QB's can control the clock and time of possession and play turnover free games, his bend (over) and don't break defense keeps our offense off the field. plain and simple it didn't work no matter WHAT the stats say. his personnel decision were not just bad, they were atrocious. he had absolutely no clue what to do with an offense or it's coordinators (think martz) and in fact his decision to hire baboonich as our DC was mindbogglingly bad and no better when HE took over as DC. if the texans are thinking of hiring him to me that is insanity. they already have a top notch DC in little bum. phillips would go the same way that rivera went in chicago and where is there offense headed? i don't like the texans so to me this is a great hire. if the lions were to sign lovie i would jump for joy.

first off... i am not being facetious when i ask you how much have you actually watched the 49ers of the 80's play. have you really watched them during that period? i can say that i have watched a lot of 9er's football at that time and not because i wanted to. they were always on because they were always in the post season mix. montana was the essence of what you call the accurate pin-point passer. add this to his timing (which is of critical importance) in hitting the multitude of receivers in stride. he was excellent at this and could think/see 3-dimensionally when looking at the field and assimilate the information very quickly. thus the old adage of the game slowing down. that said, there is never going to be a real 'set-in-stone' comparison statistically between these two QB's because their styles of play and the systems they played in are a WHOLE lot different. but i think the comparisons can be made in a general sense but you have to look at it in an abstract way to slot in the surrounding talent and coaching. these stats are very misleading. for you to say that the 9er's running backs or fullback's were for some reason an unusual target from a great QB compared to what cutler has done is not really the case. it was the system they worked within. the S.F. west coast offense as it worked at that time used it's short passing attack as a large part of it's running game. in other words they used a lot of short passes to it's RB's instead of calling a running play and in essence cultivated the same results. this had multiple implications. they could run the ball with a very good RB or use the short passing game in it's stead. this also opened up the their medium to deep passing attack by freezing the LB's and safeties in short zones thus making a lot of MOM matchups downfield (also, a LOT of rice's yardage was YAC from short to medium passes). it also opened up a lot of room for a running play to succeed. one more item... d. clark was a really nice receiver. he wasn't fast per se' but he was large with good hands. this was the guy that was our marshal or JEFFERY in the endzone. at 6'4 he was an unusually large receiver for that time and was a key target of montana in the red zone. if i am misunderstanding your point my apologies in advance... you can not possibly compare previous seasons in chicago with anything. there is nothing in the books to compare with the ineptitude of our coaches and players on offense. that cutlers game stats are even close to what they are is a testament to him having at least good qb capabilities with NO offensive line, with NO receivers and NO gameplan or coaching. finally... defenses DO make a difference in a very big way as they have done here in chicago this season. the long sustained drives on nearly every series eats up the clock and takes time AWAY from your offense. instead of watching the game on the sidelines they could be generating offense themselves to score points and finish the game out. there are in my estimation at least 2 extra series a game our offense could be on the field.

i think people may be surprised what it will cost to sign mccown. there are a LOT of teams out there looking for a good qb this offseason to START. that is not counting what other teams with GOOD qb's will pay for a #2 that can play like mccnown has this season. think of the bronco's in this qb merry-go-round for a manning backup who can win. thus if we dumped cutler we will have to pay mccown STARTER money and draft high to replace him. if we keep him we will have to up the ante to keep him as a #2. mccown who probably is grateful to chicago for this opportunity HAS to think of his family and finances first. so be prepared.

i stand corrected
