Supporting Cast False Narrative
There is a lot of ifs at this stage but I can see where we win more than we lose. I think the defense will be better. The offense can't be as bad as last year and if Fields takes a jump, better play calling, we could have a winning season. As ASH stated we still have a few weaknesses 3T and RG. I think the RG is already here, we just haven't identified him yet. I think the answer at 3T is still coming by way of Larry Ogunjobi. He hasn't been doing any visits and Poles haven't wrote him off yet. We definitely don't have a number#1 WR but we may by the end of the year. Devante Adams didn't turn into D Adams until his 5th season. Mooney still has hope.

Actually I did forget to include them.

Draft Class Thoughts
All of these national stories are predicated on the fact we didnt take a WR or OL with our first three picks. They give no value to Pringle as an ascending player, dont look at the potential of Velus Jones as a contributor his first year. They view our OL as not good because we didnt pay for a high priced FA. Our OL will be better based on Patrick at OC, Whitehair playing better, Trevin Jenkins being a stud. RG still has to play out and they still could bring in a Duane Brown for LT. It just isnt complete yet on what the OL will be day one starting the season.

I remember when Pete Carrol in his first year had 206 roster transactions to upgrade his roster, and I thought that was insane but that is how you upgrade your roster from the bottom up. If they add 5-6 roster contributors to the team thru the UDFA process that would be a plus. I have faith that the new coaching staff will be better at developing players than the Nagy staff. With no apparent starter at Sam LB spot , we could possibly find him here. Sanborn, Avery, or Albright. Christian Albright has 4.6 speed. Sanborn-4.73, Avery 4.75.

Supporting Cast False Narrative
Good article, you should write for one of these bears sites, their are a ton of them and you are much better than some of their articles.. You and AZ are both very articulate. One thing different for us compared to the other two teams is we have different regimes between year one and year two. I think that in it self will change how well Fields progresses. We had the worst offense in the league last yr , no discipline and no accountabity which affected play on the field. We have a coach that will play to his strengths, and not try to overload him with a complex offense like Nagy was trying to do. It will be more simplistic, and user friendly. He wont have five reads, he will have plays that will give him a couple choices and to run or not. My expectations are raised because I trust the coaches more to fit the talent. Even with a raw OL they will value the run which sets up the play action which helps the oline. If you use a bunch of screens that slows down the pass rush. I think our WR corp will be much better than what Jackson and Allen had in their second yrs. The national media only sees what they want to see and dont dig deep into the roster development and that's why they have such a doomsday outlook on Fields. I expect Mooney to get 150 targets this year, Pringle 100, Velus Jones 70, and Kmet 100. A better offense will increase out offensive output. Fields over 4000 yds, passing, 500 rushing with 32 TDs-10 interceptions. Where ever Flus went there was an untick in TOs and expect that to happen here. When Flus went to Indy they went from 23 to 29, last year we had 20. Last year as a team we had 3625 yards passing, Fields 1870. So with a better functioning offense see no reason he cant get to 4000.

Highlights film can be misleading. I think you first use the stats of the players to gage what they are. Productive players would at least tell you of their consistent play. Sanborn led Wisc in tackles with other quality LBers on the team. He was rated to be around a 5th round pick but got lost in the draft transition. If he was drafted in the fifth would we think differently of his ability to start. Since the SAM LB only sees 30% of the snaps, he doesnt need to be a blue chip player. Strong against the run and some coverage ability of which he seems to have. Our options at SAM are Caleb Johnson, L. Mack, C. Snowden and Sanborn. I think they have their starter already on the team as to bringing in another vet. Also they brought in a Matt Adams who would have to fit somewhere but more of a ST player.

Article on Velus Jones
I think the age thing is being to scrutinized. Obviously you've more mature at 25 instead of 22 but it only matters in service time. 7 yrs instead of 10. He was under used as a WR until he went to Tennessee. The WRs at USC while Jones was there, Michael Pittman, Drake London, Amon Ra-St Brown, JuJu Smith Schuster. That's a tough group to try to get reps from. Just a note, Devin Hester was 24 when he entered the NFL. He has skills he showed being all conference STs player of the year in both the Pac 10 and SEC. He is a physical clone to Deebo Samuel and is compared to being able to run and catch passes. His route tree is limited but so was Deebo when he came out but produced right away. His skills translate into being used in screens, jet sweeps, out route, slants, reverses, and go routes. He is much faster than Deebo 4.31 to 4.48. I think they envision him for what he is capable of doing over what other coaches used him for. In football terms, he's a boom or bust prospect. I think he was more of a 4 th round value than in third but never got a trade to slide down to the 4th so they took him there. They clearly targeted him over other WRs left on the board , since they valued speed. If he had been a 4th or 5th round pick, he won't be talked about as much. In the first place , the first 3 picks you needed starters over players that needed development. They did that. Pringle can play on the outside while they slide him into the slot, so you have your 3 starters. If he gets 50 catches for 640 yds with 250 yrs rushing and 8 TDs , we have a winner.

Starting Roster
In Indys defense last yr. The MLB, WLB, Slot Corner, 3T tackle were the top tacklers on the team. The starting SAM on the team was Zaire Franklin and he only saw the field 18% of the time. Even without a clear starter designated at SAM, the rotational 3 T is the weakest spot on the defense. As a team they only had 33 sacks. Buckner led at 7, Al-Q Muhammad was second with 6 and another DE had 4 , Kwity Paye. If Ogunjobi does come back here , our weakness disappears, otherwise Jones only had 3 sacks last year. Even if he ascends, 6-7 sacks is all you could hope for. Flus has never had this kind of talent in the pass rush. Quinn, Gibson, Al-Q Muhammad and hopefully Ogunjobi, if he comes back. I can see Jones sliding over to the NT starter if Ogunjobi does come back, at least they gives you some pass rush ability at that spot.

Starting Roster
Poles said they really won't be able to evaluate the OL until they get them in pads. So LT has Borom, Davenport, and Braxton Jones as our options. They could also move Jenkins back there. RG has Dozier, Mustifer, Thomas and Ja'Tre Carter. So if they bring in anyone it will be at RG. Actually Daryl Williams could play both OT spots and RG if he had to. So he might be the best option because of his flexibility. What they have to do is bring in a X WR. Who out there that has better potential than St Brown? Landry and Beasley are Slot WRs..TY Hilton and Will Fuller are the best options . I wouldn't trust Fuller to stay healthy. So do you want St Brown or TY Hilton.I would just go with St Brown. We need a better option at 3T , Jones and Edwards or Sam Kamara. Who ? I would say they bring Ogunjobi back, he hasn't taken any visits to other teams, so maybe it's already been stated. I think the SAM LB is already on the roster. Johnson or Sanborn. Maybe Mack or Snowden can play there.

Draft Class Thoughts
A few tidbits I picked up on . Velus Jones has did KRs every where he went. In his career he never had a fumble or muffed punt. That's unbelievable. Never missed any games due to injury. Brisker and Gordon didnt have a penality both of the last two yrs. Between the two , only gave up one TD in the last few yrs. C J Avery-Jack Sanborn and Jaylan Alexander all lead their teams in tackles in 2021.

Back to Cliff Stein Way of Doing Business
Cliff has always done a good job but wasnt good enough for Pace. I could never figure that out. Maybe Pace wanted more control over the money.

Bears claim Chris Finke
I think Poles throws darts at the board, and see what sticks. The more darts the better.

Draft Class Thoughts
As we saw the last few years, player development was sketchy at best I think Fluxes has coaches that value player development. They had a couple of gems on the Colts D that shows that. I think one of the 4 OL ends being a starter this year. It may not be day one but he drafted with upside. Also don't forget the punter show win that job.

Roster optimism
Pringle has lined outside before so they will put him out there. Jones Jr, in the slot with Mooney and Pringle out side.

Draft Class Thoughts
I'm not sure I had this optimism with Pace and when Nagy came here. Pace always talked a good draft but constantly giving up draft picks to move up. Also never addressed OL as much as he should have. Said he was drafting a QB every year and didn't do it . Whether it works out or not, I like the way he's doing it even though I wanted offense early and often. Not paying out big contracts, taking possible ascending players. Seems old school but like it that way.

Draft Class Thoughts
If we end up getting Ogunjobi back the only spot left to fill is SAM LB spot. Could already be on roster. UDFA Jack Sanborn . Led a Badger team in tackles. Solid player. This definitely would be a better D than last year, even thou Hicks and Mack were on team, injuries affected their play.

Monty is a good football player, not a star but a blue collar fight every step of the way player. They will offer him a team friendly deal, if he moves on, Herbert and Ebner are better fits in this offense anyway.

Draft Class Thoughts
I like your take on the prospects and will say about Jones, he is limited as a WR as far as route tree but giving him 10 to 12 touches a game will show big on film. Jet sweeps and screens. The go route, slants , and catching swing passes , he will kill people. As soon as they see his speed and have to give him room, you have him do curls all day. Why he would be good for Fields, other the go route, those are all quick passes, Fields doesn't need to think about them just 3 steps and throw. Flus was excited to get him, they targeted him, they have a plan for him. Just watch some Deebo Samuel tape, it will show you how their going to use him.

Roster optimism
I love Monty, fights for every yard, can catch the ball well. I've been watching tape on Tristan Ebner and he's got game. If people got hurt , would have no problem him being our #1 for a few games. He can play, reminds me of T. Cohen on his skat type running. They say he is 4.42 40 guy but looks faster on film. He could beat out Evans as the third back. On film all he does is run away from people.

30% of NFL rosters last year were UDFAs. I think we keep 53 players and 12 on the practice squad. So 30% of 65 is 18 UDFAs. Ill start and add as I look at tape. For arguments sake I'll say 12 do. Players that make the roster: Chase Allen/TE Jack Sanborn/ LB

Roster optimism
The more you read and look at film of these draftees, the more you like Brisker and Gordon. In the last two years, combined, only gave up one TD on pass plays and no penalties. Leaders on their teams and big hitters. Besides being day one starters, could be pro bowl types. I hated not taking offensive players but those were good picks. I think they find a role for Jones similar to Deebo. Deebo's first year, had 57 catches, 802 yards and 3 TDs. Also ran for159 yards and 3 TDs. I can see similar numbers. He has been KRer of the year in two different conferences, Pac12 and SEC. A big IF, they use him right, could have a big impact on offense. Another player I watched on film was Elijah Hicks, A SS out of Cal, has got game to. Kramer, Thomas, and Braxton Jones all could eventually be starters. The punter could end up taking that job, and Robinson has a ton of potential. Ebner could make the roster this year as as KRer and specialty player out of the backfield. A excellent receiver with4.42 speed. This could turn out to be a foundation builder for the bears at the start of the Justin Fields era.

I seen a post on Twitter showing a new S we have, thought it was Brisker until I noticed the uniforms. Eligah Hicks has some game.

Roster optimism
I agree with that. I think Poles assessment after the draft will cause him to get Duane Brown and move Borom to RG. I find it very hard this team will be as bad as last year. If you changed no personal, better coaching and play calling is a net positive. Fields will improve. Better Def, more TOs, ( Flus did that every where he coached), the defense is a Ogunjobi away from being very good. The WR will grade out better than it looks on paper.
-
Roster optimism
I could do a negative post and list all the potential pitfalls but that's not me. I am hoping for Ogunjobi to come back, odds aren't in my favor, so if not, definitely a weakness. Edwards and Karama can back up Jones but not sure what you get. .Free agency is pretty thin for 3Ts, maybe Nick Williams, he had 7 sacks as a backup when with us. Maybe a UDFA surprises us. I think after the draft Poles will evaluate the OL and bring a vet in if he needs to. My love for Carter comes from the regional scouts opinion on Carter, based on nothing else.i do wholeheartedly believe Jones becomes a playmaker for us, watch a ton tape on him.
