  1. Wasn't linked until he signed. Just watch - all of a sudden we are going to see the  Bears trade Fields or make some other out of the blue signing. Very clear that no one really knows who Bears are talking to - but I do think understanding the position(s) of need does help at least indicate where they are likely spending time.

This still goes back to - wideout is a MASSIVE need, so I expect they will double dip here - both a decent sized FA signing as well as use of a higher end draft pick on the position, with potential for them to double dip (ie one in FA and 2 in draft or vice versa I suppose).

After wideout - I expect Poles will target value in the market more so than need. Say Connor Williams market isn't what it is - maybe that is where he makes a splash looking at upgrading C in the LT, knowing Bates can do it now, but it isn't a bad thing if Bates does well as he has positional versatility and can flex elsewhere.

They have a lot more history together than that:

Yeah - hit me that they also spent time together with the Rams. I always think when you sign a guy you are familiar with / have more intimate knowledge of, it lowers the risk in free agency. Doesn't mean something can't happen - but the risk is less. Waldron clearly knows Everett and vice versa.

  3. They needed another TE and this is a good depth move. I hope he can still be as productive as he has been cause he's been pretty solid.  I think at this point - you can take Brockers off the list. I get he is a special talent - but unless they have him down as one of best TE's ever I don't think Bears are picking him at 9 (vs. a wideout, top dline, OT, or a trade down).

Yeah the Bears have to lose more free agents than they sign, and based on salary range. So Mooney signing helps the Bears, but then is negated by one of the Bears FAs who signs for a similar amount.

And some guys count and some guys don't. So I know our safety signing doesn't count since he was released (vs. FA).

  5. A report out there that Bears were the runner up for Gabe Davis - who signed with Jags.  He is from Florida so wanted to head back home - which is understandable.  Also - this is a good time to remember the dangers and pitfalls of FA. When you look back 2 or 3 years at the top FA targets - the majority DID NOT live up to expectations.

So while we all want all the big moves - its important to know the failure rate here is high - hence why hitting on draft picks and than using cap space to retain your own draft picks for a 2nd contract is so key.

Holy WR,  Mooney signs a 3 years 39 mil deal with Atlanta.

League is saying - we have watched the film - Chiefs were all over him as well.  They are saying - Mooney was open a TON and the QB wasn't finding him.  Maybe the league is wrong - we will see, but Mooney was highly productive until he wasn't the #1 option and than production shrunk completely.

How Falcons can make it all work I don't know.  I was quietly hoping we would get Mooney back for like 10M per year cause I always respect how he went about his work, but good for him and I wish him the best.  Falcons have some weapons for Cousin(s) - they are actually going to be pretty good.

Yes, we know you don't like Fields as a QB. Yes, we get it. Believe me, we all know!

I still think - if I were FIeld(s) - I would want to make sure I end up somewhere and get a real chance to play. If I don't - I'm not starting with the Bears (presuming they take Caleb), so worse case I stay in Chicago for a year as a backup and are signing a 1YR prove it deal which is a pretty big risk for him. IF he ends up in a bad situation - he could be benched real fast for some 4th rounder they take a shot at and than be in backup h*ll.

So If I were Field(s), I'd have my agent working with a team - say it is Seattle or New England - and I'll agree to a 2YR 35M extension (so 17.5M per season) - guaranteed.  So I work this year on my cheap rookie deal, than am agreeing to 2 discounted years in exchange for guaranteed money.  Now Seattle or New England have motivation to make this move and give up capital - this isn't a 1YR proposition and if Field(s) is solid I'm getting a QB at a reasonable price (as far as QB's go) and am not hamstrung by the cap.

If Field(s) isn't good - he's a backup and not a huge risk down the road but if he hits - you have him for 2 more years and in 1-2 years you will give him a huge extension.  Field(s) knows he has general weatlth and a real chance to start - which is what it will take to ever get a big LT contract.  If Field(s) ends up not being very good - at least he got that payment.

  8. Welp - they either keep him and he walks next year in FA for a comp pick (hopefully a 3rd round grade) or you keep him and trade him later in the off-season or even in-season to a team that has an injury to their QB.  Or you maybe get a 4th rounder for him.  God I hope it is something more but it seems like the NFL has spoken and none of us know what Poles asking price is - but teams around the league are choosing a lot of other players over Fields (and whatever Poles is asking for).

Unless Vikings want him - and they are supposedly looking at Sam D'Arnold.  Or we get surprised by a team who brings him in as a back-up or bridge guy.

Is this for real or is Warren sending a message to Arlington Heights that they had better renegotiate the tax assessment evaluation?

This seems for real. It seems like the Bears want to stay in Chicago and there is a willingness to do so. Maybe Arlington Heights was always just that - leverage.  Personally I love the idea of them staying in Chicago.  But I didn't care if they moved to Arlington Heights either - but staying in downtown is cooler in my opinion.

I don't understand it.  Every team in the NFL can trade for him.  I found it stupid from true beginning.  At the combine, 4 medical teams evaluate you, then it's over.  He chooses to have it done numerous separate times, which I would find overwhelming.

I think he will just submit the standard medical report - which is all that happens at the combine, so I think this is more just him limiting the info and how widely it is shared.

  11. I thought it was interesting the Bears released this on the same day as NFL free agency opened.  Seems like a way to hide this in a news release - which I wonder why. Bears are literally offering to help fund (along with private money) a new stadium on the lakefront.  Would seem like good PR so why have it come out same time as NFL FA.

Some reports have Williams meeting with the Bears here after the March 20th Pro Day at USC. That is when he will be expected to submit medicals. Supposedly his camp thinks it makes no sense to share medical info with teams that won't have a chance to draft him. Its unprecedented but, I understand the thinking.

Yeah - I can't argue keeping personal info more private. Why give it to 32 teams when maybe 3-5 have a chance at getting you.

If Poles is not talking trades for Justin, then you're not getting any offers. When Caleb blew off the medicals and Poles had no choice but to keep Justin as a option. No one considers a draftee without the medicals. They might be probable in drafting Williams but ain't letting Justin go until they know that.

How would it look if Poles traded Justin and then it comes out that Caleb has some medical problems. Not a good look.

If Caleb had a bunch of injuries during college - sure, the medicals would be critical.  The meds aren't holding up the Bears - especially not when you have a couple QB's all out there.  I'm not saying they couldn't look at his meds and be thrown off - anything is possible - but that isn't stopping Bears from doing what they do with Field(s).  And the whole league knows Field(s) is available.  And even if Poles weren't taking calls - that doesn't stop someone from asking.  I am sure Washington and other teams have asked about #1 - they have probably gotten a pretty good feel for - oh man, they aren't budging (or if they are - they had an ask for something so unrealistic it basically implies the pick isn't available (something like 5 or 6 FRP's or something absurd).

I agree the media is but no team reported they think Justin is terrible. The lack of attention for a trade is because of Wilson, Cousins, and Mayfield. Once they're off  the table they will  turn to the draft and  if they are not able to get their guy, then Justin is in play. Then you can judge trade value. You are in denial if you think Poles is trading him for a 4 th or 5 th round pick. He will keep him . having a couple starting caliber QBs on the roster is not a bad strategy.

If teams thought Justin was great - they would be bidding all over for his services.  Now if we see him go for a 1st rounder - fine, that tells you someone thinks he is a dude. But if he ends up getting a 3rd - yeah - there is no way to chalk that up than teams just thinking he's a mediocre starter worth taking a chance at given his physical tools.

Doesn't mean the league is right or wrong - he could use it as extra edge and turn into something, but nothing on film passing wise and progression wise over past 3 years show him getting the ball out faster and more on script.  It basically shows him being the same player from year 2 to year 3 and that is a player who flashes greatness off script but is very much not great during the game and who wilts in the 4th quarter.

I think they aren't as high on Herbert as we are?

I think they just view it as - Herbert is okay - but probably not a starter. Johnson is just entering year 2 and he was okay. He could end up being good, but he could also just be meh.  Swift has been low usage and is in his prime and definitely has some game.

Herbert is gone at end of the year and depth is important. This is a guy with low mileage as a starter and who has been pretty darn good. 3 year deal is perfect and the money is very reasonable. I love this deal and think we are paying for his BEST years which is exactly what you want to do when you sign a RB. I think whomever gets Saquon or Jacobs are paying for past production vs. future production.
