    Matt Jones

http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?po...;name=dickerson There's been no evidence -- outside of Plaxico Burress -- of the Bears looking for any additional help at wide receiver. However, the Bears may have quietly done some homework on free agent Matt Jones. The talented but troubled Jones, a first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005 -- admitted Wednesday his representatives have engaged in some dialogue with Chicago. "My agent has talked to the Jets, Titans, Bears and Dallas," Jones told 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock, Ark. "Things are looking good. Something probably will happen sooner rather than later. We just want it to be a good fit and somewhere where I can get in there and help a team win." The Bears seem content to let their unproven receivers get as many reps as possible during training camp. Perhaps Jones is simply viewed as an emergency option in the event of an injury. Or maybe Jones is a backup plan if guys like Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox and Juaquin Iglesias bomb this summer. Or maybe the Bears don't have any interest at all. Just for the record: Jones claims to be in outstanding shape after spending the last four months training down in Florida.

    Greg Olsen

http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?po...;name=dickerson Bears tight end Greg Olsen paid a visit to ESPN's First Take on Friday and hit on several key topics -- the biggest being the team's depth at wide receiver. "I know there are a lot of names there that most people don't recognize, but I really believe that those guys are going to have a good season," Olsen said. "Obviously Devin [Hester], everyone knows about Devin and what he's been able to do. I think he's going to surprise some people. What he was able to do this off-season and the way he looked in OTA's and minicamp, I think he looks like a top-tier receiver. Some of those young guys, Earl [bennett], and obviously Rashied [Davis] is a veteran who's played for a while, and some of those rookies we drafted, so I think we've got a lot of guys who are going to surprise some people." As for the never-ending speculation/hope that Bears management will make a move to bring in another wideout, Olsen declined to lobby for another player to be added to the mix. "I don't think it's out of the question but I think right now the management -- as do the coaches and the players -- feel pretty confident with the team we have right now going into training camp," Olsen said." I think we're confident that if these are the guys we have for Game 1. I think we're pretty confident that we have a chance to be successful." Switching to the defensive side of the ball, Olsen marveled at Brian Urlacher's offseason, saying he anticipates a big year out of the middle linebacker. "I think he's trying to show people he can get back into his true mold," Olsen said. "He wasn't coming off any injuries this year, you know he had the neck and the back and I think that set him back in his offseason training, but I think he's back in his old mold. He's bigger, he's stronger, he looks like he's 25 again. I think he's going to go back to being the dominant force that he was for us, and I think that people are going to be real excited to see him this year."

  9. http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=5786 April 27, 2009 Bears earn high marks for draft effort By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 4/27/2009 5:30 PM LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears generally were awarded high marks for their performance in this past weekend's NFL Draft, earning two As, five Bs and two Cs from the following national writers and broadcasters: In giving the Bears a B, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. labeled third-round pick Jarron Gilbert the biggest steal of the draft and wrote that “wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias was a good pick, as were cornerback D.J. Moore and wide receiver Johnny Knox. Seventh-round pick Derek Kinder could turn out to be quite a sleeper if he's able to return to his strong level of play before his injury a couple of years ago.” ESPN’s Todd McShay called Moore the Bears’ best pick and Iglesias the worst. Wrote McShay: "The Bears' biggest need was finding weapons for new QB Jay Cutler, and they failed to accomplish that goal. Iglesias is, at best, a possession No. 3 receiver and Johnny Knox will probably max out as a receiver in sub packages who would contribute on special teams. On the positive side, the Bears hit homers on DT Jarron Gilbert and Moore." Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports gave the Bears a B. He wrote: “The lack of a pick in the first two rounds hurts a nice-sized class, and Iglesias isn’t going to solve the wide receiver issues. However, Gilbert could blossom into a good pass rusher from the tackle spot, and the fact that the first-round pick was traded in a deal for quarterback Jay Cutler is factored in.” USA Today’s Larry Weisman gave the Bears a B-, writing: “Count QB Jay Cutler in this equation; [he] cost Bears their No. 1 and more. Grade goes up if he performs. Bears had real needs in the pass-rush area after no player had more than six sacks last year. DE Jarron Gilbert has size and quickness and was a nice grab in the third round. Grabbed another DE in fourth round and a CB as well. Bears knew where their holes were and tried to fill. No real O-line help and could have interior issues.” Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com gave the Bears an A. “They get that if you count Cutler, which I do,” he wrote. Prisco called the Cutler deal “the move of the year.” He also questioned the decision to trade out of the second round but added: "I love third-round pick Juaquin Iglesias. He will be a factor as a slot receiver for Cutler.” Clifton Brown of The Sporting News awarded the Bears an A and wrote: “Trading for Jay Cutler before the draft was factored into this grade. But they also added talent without having a first-round pick. Defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert could develop into a solid run-stopper, and wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias is a possession receiver for Cutler to try and build chemistry.” John Czarnecki of FoxSports.com gave the Bears a B- and wrote that “Juaquin Iglesais was a solid pickup with the 99th overall selection. Some teams rated him in the second round. Vanderbilt cornerback D.J. Moore is a very tough player despite his 5-9 frame. But the steal for the Bears could be San Jose State defensive end Jarron Gilbert, who was known for his You Tube video of being able to jump out of a swimming pool.” Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News gave the Bears a C, writing: “The Bears had the best third round of this draft. Gilbert and Iglesias were second-round values who slid into the third. The Bears got a late start – their first pick was 68th overall – but they finished strong.” Mark Maske of the Washington Post awarded the Bears a C+ and wrote that the “Bears gave up plenty in their recent trade for QB Jay Cutler, perhaps a bit too much, and didn’t pick until the third round. Their top selection, DT Jarron Gilbert, could be an impact player.” NBCSports.com gave the Bears a B+, writing: “The Bears traded their first-round pick for Jay Cutler and moved out of round two after Cleveland took Brian Robiskie. GM Jerry Angelo went on a tear with his next four picks, landing four straight dynamic talents. DT Jarron Gilbert was easily the best player drafted on day two and WR Juaquin Iglesias is a pro-ready route runner. RB-turned-DE Henry Melton possesses rare athleticism and upside. CB D.J. Moore's lack of elite speed is less of a problem in Chicago's Cover-2 defense. The Bears won't count on much from late-rounders Derek Kinder, Al Afalava, or Lance Louis, but Ohio State LB Marcus Freeman is the perfect backup for Lance Briggs and WR Johnny Knox has speed to burn.” Clark Judge of CBSSports.com listed Bears GM Jerry Angelo among the 10 biggest winners in the draft, writing: “He took the first day off after trading away a second-round choice, but he went back to work Sunday and produced results. Getting defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert at the top of the third round was a steal. Getting Joaquin Iglesias at the bottom was another bargain. But maybe his best move was acquiring defensive end Henry Melton in the fourth round. A former running back, he was one of the few defensive ends in this draft with size and speed.”

Jeff Dickerson's Blog http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?po...;name=dickerson Lower asking price puts Boldin in play With the price down to a 2nd-rounder and players, the Bears could make an offer for Anquan Boldin April 24, 2009, 2:58 PM By: Jeff Dickerson The question has never been whether the Bears want Anquan Boldin. Rather, do the Bears have enough to get Anquan Boldin? In light of the recent report by ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, the answer to the second question may be "yes." Two sources tell Paolantonio that Arizona has lowered its demands, asking now for a second-rounder plus other (likely player) considerations. Of course, the team that acquires Boldin must also rip up his old contract, but the Bears have ample space under the cap to accommodate such a transaction. Money should not be an issue. Parting with a second-round pick is also acceptable. The only remaining question: Do the Bears have the player/players to satisfy the Cardinals? Brian Urlacher has an off-season home in the Phoenix area. Does that work? So does Lance Briggs. Bottom line, with the Giants, Eagles and Jets reportedly in the mix for Boldin, the Bears need to act quickly. If you have any doubts that the Bears could pull this off, just look at who will likely be starting under center for them in 2009.

  12. Part 2 Leading up to the draft, Jeff revisits Jerry Angelo's hits and misses as Bears GM. April 19, 2009, 7:15 PM By: Jeff Dickerson In five of his seven drafts in Chicago, Jerry Angelo has taken a running back. Will it happen again this year? The odds seem low, since Kevin Jones was re-signed to back-up incumbent starter Matt Forte. Plus, it's time to see if Garrett Wolfe was worth being a third round selection in 2007. Will Ron Turner find a way to use Wolfe in the offensive game plan? Finally, Adrian Peterson remains a rock on special teams, but it's getting increasingly difficult for the Bears to keep four backs active on game days. If Peterson or Wolfe is on shaky ground, then maybe Angelo takes a running back late. His track record at the position has been hit-or-miss: 2002: Round 6 -- Adrian Peterson, Ga. Southern 2003: Round 6 -- Brock Forsey, Boise State 2005: Round 1 -- Cedric Benson, Texas 2007: Round 3 -- Garrett Wolfe, Northern Illinois 2008: Round 2 -- Matt Forte, Tulane Ever since the Roosevelt Williams debacle, cornerback has been another strong area in terms of the Bears talent evaluation process. However, there are some major issues at the position; Can Nathan Vasher bounce back after two injury-plagued seasons? Can Charles Tillman stay healthy? Is Corey Graham capable of taking over the job on a full-time basis if Vasher falters? What's the status of Trumaine McBride and is Zack Bowman officially a free safety? All these factors lead me to believe that Angelo will likely grab a corner next weekend. If his track record holds true, the man he drafts will probably turn out to be a decent player. 2002: Round 3 -- Roosevelt Williams, Tuskegee 2003: Round 2 --Charles Tillman, La.-Lafayette 2004: Round 4 -- Nathan Vasher, Texas 2004: Round 7 -- Alfonso Marshall, Miami (Fla.) 2006: Round 2 -- Devin Hester, Miami (Fla.) 2007: Round 5 -- Corey Graham, New Hampshire 2007: Round 7 -- Trumaine McBride, Ole Miss 2008: Round 5 -- Zack Bowman, Nebraska Probably the best pick in the Angelo era was Lance Briggs back in 2003. Not bad, when you find a future four-time Pro Bowler in the third round. But as good as the Briggs pick turned out to be, what in the world were the Bears thinking taking Michael Okwo in the same round in 2007? Because Okwo busted out, the depth at linebacker remains suspect. Expect the Bears to address the position with one of their eight selections. Besides Briggs, Angelo hasn't exactly lit the world on fire at LB. 2002: Round 5 -- Bryan Knight, Pitt 2003: Round 3 -- Lance Briggs, Arizona 2003: Round 6 -- Joe Odom, Purdue 2005: Round 7 -- Rod Wilson, South Carolina 2006: Round 4 -- Jamar Williams, Arizona State 2007: Round 3 -- Michael Okwo, Stanford 2008: Round 7 -- Joey LaRocque, Oregon State (quality special teams performer) Trading for Jay Cutler solved the Bears generational issue at quarterback. At some point, the Bears will need to add a fourth arm to the equation for training camp purposes. Maybe the extra QB comes via an undrafted free agent, like Caleb Hanie last season. In the past, Angelo has been reluctant to pull the trigger at the spot, drafting only three during his tenure at Halas Hall. 2003: Round 1 -- Rex Grossman, Florida 2004: Round 5 -- Craig Krenzel, Ohio State 2005: Round 4 -- Kyle Orton, Purdue For the last two seasons the tight ends have been the most productive unit on offense. Remember when the Bears could never get this position fixed? Still, there was a major issue last year with short yardage blocking from the No. 3 tight end Kellen Davis. Some feel Fontel Mines provides a better alternative to Davis, but draft status still plays a role in playing time. It wouldn't come as a shock if the Bears look to upgrade at tight end to better compliment to receiving skills of Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark. However, like quarterback, Jerry Angelo has taken only a handful of tight ends since 2002. 2002: Round 6 -- Bryan Fletcher, UCLA 2007: Round 1 -- Greg Olsen, Miami 2008: Round 5 -- Kellen Davis, MSU
  13. http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?name=dickerson Leading up to the draft, Jeff revisits Jerry Angelo's hits and misses as Bears GM. April 18, 2009, 10:25 PM By: Jeff Dickerson US Presswire We are officially a week away from the NFL draft. Now that you're up to speed on many of the prospects, let's focus on Jerry Angelo's draft history with the Bears. We assume safety will be addressed next weekend. Don't be surprised if the Bears double dip at that spot, selecting one early, and one late. Angelo's track-record at the position says it all: 2002: Round 5 -- Bobby Gray, La. Tech 2003: Round 4 -- Todd Johnson, Florida 2005: Round 6 -- Chris Harris, La.-Monroe 2006: Round 2 -- Danieal Manning, Abilene Christian 2007: Round 5 -- Kevin Payne, La.-Monroe 2008: Round 4 -- Craig Steltz, LSU Wide-receiver should happen at either No. 49 or No. 99. Can the Bears find the right guy? Trust me, you can get an excellent receiver in the second or third round this year. But since selecting Bernard Berrian in the third round in 2004, it hasn't been pretty. 2005: Round 2 -- Mark Bradley, Oklahoma 2005: Round 5 -- Airese Curry, Clemson 2008: Round 3 -- Earl Bennett, Vanderbilt (the jury is still out) 2008: Round 7 -- Marcus Monk, Arkansas With the exception of Chris Williams and Marc Colombo, Angelo usually looks for offensive line help in the mid-to-late rounds. Some notable examples: 2002: Round 3 -- Terrance Metcalf, Ole Miss 2006: Round 6 -- Tyler Reed, Penn State 2008: Round 7 -- Kirk Barton, Ohio State Expect more offensive line help to again come in the mid-to-late rounds. Unless there is a can't miss tackle at No. 49 or No. 99, the Bears can afford to wait now that Orlando Pace, Frank Omiyale and Kevin Shaffer came on board. Defensive end is a major issue for two reasons; (1) As we previously stated, Adewale Ogunleye, Mark Anderson and Izzy Idonije are entering the final years of their deals (although Anderson's status could be effected by the on-going collective bargaining agreement issue in the NFL) and (2) Dan Bazuin was a bust. Since hitting a home run (in my estimation) with Alex Brown in the 4th round back in 2002, Angelo hasn't had much luck with defensive end. 2003: Round 1 -- Michael Haynes, Penn State 2004: Round 5 -- Claude Harriott, Pitt 2006: Round 5 -- Mark Anderson, Alabama (so far a one-year wonder) 2007: Round 2 -- Dan Bazuin, Central Michigan 2208: Round 7 -- Ervin Baldwin, MSU (jury is still out) Moving inside the defensive line, the Bears do a terrific job targeting defensive tackles. Just one DT in the Angelo era failed to make significant contributions to the team. 2003: Round 4 -- Ian Scott, Florida 2003: Round 5 -- Tron Lafavor, Florida 2004: Round 1 -- Tommie Harris, Oklahoma 2004: Round 2 -- Tank Johnson, Wash 2006: Round 3 -- Dusty Dvoracek, Oklahoma 2008: Round 3 -- Marcus Harrison, Arkansas Now if those defensive tackles could just stay healthy. Tomorrow we'll look at quarterback, cornerback, linebacker and running back.
  14. This week, Jay Cutler's moaning has distracted Mel Kiper Jr. from his usual draft content. "Talk about whining and complaining -- this is at the top of the list," Kiper says. Cutler's complaining came about because the Denver Broncos tried to trade Cutler in a three-team deal that would have brought over Matt Cassel from New England. But when the trade fell through, Cutler started to complain. Kiper says Cassel would have been an "upgrade" over Cutler and that Cutler is, to put it mildly, overrated. "[Cutler] throws one pass, he's a Hall of Famer," Kiper says. "I've seen the media put him in the Hall of Fame. I had to run to the bathroom quick. It was making me ill. I've been hearing this overhype. "This guy was overhyped at the combine, he was overhyped at Senior Bowl week, he's been overhyped before he was drafted. The media, they love Jay Cutler. Jay Cutler can do no wrong. I've been saying he's overrated since day one. Everyone's been pounding their chests saying, 'Oh, I love Jay Cutler, I'm a genius.' They have egg on their face now." Kiper points out that Cutler has yet to lead the Broncos to a winning record or a playoff appearance. Also, Kiper says, "[Cutler] makes throws that leave you scratching your head, which I said on draft day when he was picked. Yeah, he's got a strong arm, but my daughter knew he had a strong arm. She could've written that report." Kiper compares Cutler to Jeff George. "Jeff George had a great arm, and Jeff George had a lot of great games in this league, and people were putting Jeff George in the HOF early in his career," Kiper says. "So I'm just telling you, this is ridiculous." Also, Cutler once said he had a better arm than John Elway. Not surprisingly, Kiper isn't a big fan of that comment, either. "So what? Who cares? Why would you make a comparison to John Elway? That could be taken like you're in a position to critique the quarterback that is a legend."

  18. Two sources said offensive tackle John Tait is seriously considering retirement, and a third source close to the team called it a fait accompli that Tait will not return for 2009 despite having one year left on his contract. Mike Brown, the heart and soul of the Bears for the last nine seasons, was informed Friday that the team will not make him a contract offer. The Bears also cut ties with Marty Booker, one of the top wide receivers in team history, but the biggest story is the Bears seem set to lose a player they want to have back. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/index.html
